First I presume you know that only the beginning of Sanditon was written by Jane Austen herself. The rest of this short series was created by Andrew Davies who, alone or with others, decided to end with the wedding of Lord Babington and Esther Denham and with the sad farewell between Charlotte and Sydney. The reason was the debt that the Parker family had incurred while they tried to make Sanditon into a rich seaside resort. To pay off the debt Sydney was going to marry the rich widow Mrs Campion. Sad for the three of them: Mrs Campion, Charlotte and Sydney really! I loved the character of Lady Susan and would like a follow up series where she, along with Charlotte find a way of making a living and showing the men how it's done. Then they could get Young Stringer to design elegant buildings and they could find a happier life for Georgiana Lambe- social work in the London slums?
I cannot believe some of the shows out there that get renewed when they are not nearly as good as Sanditon. I think this show just lacked exposure. What a shame. The ending kills me!
It's rather sad to be happy then to hear that he's not coming back. Sidney deserved his HEA with Charlotte. We fought for them to have their happily ever after

@@Spasiuka Sidney's brother fell into debt and the family would have been ruined, and so although Sidney had just realised he was in love with Charlotte, he proposed to his ex girlfriend instead because she was from a rich family and in marrying her he might be able to save the family. Of course, she accepted, being the sly and devious woman that she is 😡 And Charlotte had no option but to go home, her heart utterly broken 💔 (In my comment I'm just referring to relationships in general not working out for whatever reason and leaving two people very unhappy for the rest of their lives! That sense of longing and yet having something so out of reach must be unbearable)
This is a super tribute! I am a rare fan because I like the ending. Charlotte has many reasons for being happy once she's got over the worst. She can remember the words of Mary, young Springer, Lady Susan and Sidney himself.
