A history lesson with a laugh, what a great combination. Love these podcasts. You make subjects that I have mild, or passing interest in fun and fascinating.

@@CL-we8tn Thank you, but I was was because of dumb stuff, just because I need to do a portifólio(I don't know the name in English-I doesn't even knew what it was it before the geography teacher asked to do it) to my geography teacher. And I thought it was difficult but today when I beggin to do it I saw that it isn't, and I probably will finish it tomorrow :D

Yes!!! I have been waiting for you guys to talk about Dom Pedro II. It is of my opinion that he was one of the most intelligent men in history.

This emperor sounds a lot like prince Albert husband of queen Victoria - interest in science, the latest inventions, progress and all that kind of thing.

The diamond influence on the Brazilian flag sounds slightly spurious. The diamond design was used on French Imperial military flags from 1804 to 1812 but was then replaced by a tricolour. So, there may have been a stylistic influence but it isn't a reference.

Small correction, Brazil wasn't the only Latin American country to begin as a monarchy. Mexico started as an empire as well, albeit for a much shorter period of time.
Haiti was also an empire for a bit, though it didn't start as one.

I think that in general, if we consider only Brazil for a matter of longevity, both Haiti and Mexico were monarchy, however, what the longevity of them, I mean even after the end of the Empire, the fact of their existence continues to have deep reverberations in Brazil today, both material aspect through institutions, foundations, laws (there are literally laws and institutions created by Pedro I and II that are in the constitution today) and among others, and the immaterial through how it affected social relations in Brazil. In this sense, I believe that, yes, we should consider the monarchy in Brazil something different and more tangible than in Mexico or Haiti, which existed for too little time to have such great effects that could make them inseparable from the idea of the formation of a country, as occurred in Brazil.

Mexico did not begin as a monarchy. Maximillian was installed 40 years after independence. Died by firing squad a few years later. His era gave us Cinco de Mayo-wildly celebrated in the U.S. w overconsumption of margaritas.

    D. Pedro II was an intelectual and good person, but not an emperor. The first Pedro with all problems was important on manteining the unity of Brazil

My Brazilian learner was absolutely shattered after the election as she says Lula is terrible for Brazil, stealing money etc. I think Dominic is a bit biased here, chosing Lula over Bolsonaro.
