Mr. Lumnah, I would suggest that you move the milking stand back four to six inches front the facing wall. At least until you put in the wall boards. It looks like Willow sneaked a few nibbles on the foam while you were talking and milking. While I was growing up, my Dad would "Turn up the thermostat" in the stanchion barn by pushing the hay left from overnight to where the cows could reach it, or giving them more if they'd eaten it all. Its amazing how much heat a ruminant can generate by eating dry hay. That's why one if the last chores at night in cold weather was to go out to the barn about ten PM and make sure there was plenty of hay in reach of the cows. May I suggest something similar to you?
I am a 69 (yikes!) year old woman starting late in life raising chickens and growing veggies in a large garden. I enjoyed watching you build the barn and wood shed so I’m in the process of rebuilding a roof for the chicken run using some of your techniques. If I run out of season I will rebuild the chicken run next spring. Thank you for the encouragement! I feel like I can do whatever it is I need to do. My husband thinks I’m crazy!!
Good morning Lumnahs... those chickens would not let Al have the last word, cheeky birds. That new chicken door sure looks nifty. Olivia looks like she loves the woodpile and the goats are getting adventurous in the pasture. Gina, you're the best and I love breakfast for dinner. Stay blessed and I can't wait for the next video.🤙
Awesome door for the chickens. Breakfast for dinner is one of my favs. I am like Olivia; ketchup on my scrambled eggs. I like when Gina and you cook anything. You make it all look so appetizing. Thanks for sharing, and bless you all.
I immediately thought .. after seeing the chicken coup automatic door being installed... that a roof just over the door would be smart.. to keep rain and snow off the top of the electronic door opening device.
@@jeffweber8244 Do we really know how much it would be affected by a roof? After all, it doesn't have to rely on direct sunlight to open the door in the mornings, right? If it does, I can't see it that it would be very useful, especially on cloudy winter New Hampshire mornings. But, I haven't seen the specs. I guess I just assume that you would be able to set it according to a timer, as well as light, but I could see such a device being only one way or the other. :( The main thing that Al seems to be excited about is for it to close the coop at night. He is out there feeding all the other animals in the mornings so I guess morning opening isn't that necessary.
@@jeffweber8244 The unit has an adjustable light sensor. A roof would have no ill effect. It doesn't require direct sun. I've used this same unit (with a home-built door) for over three years with the sensor in complete shade at sunrise and sunset. Factory settings worked well with no problems. Anyway, he used the timer option which means it would work in complete darkness.
@@jeffweber8244 The sensor will work fine under a roof. Mine was outside the barn on a west wall and the auto door would not close until it was pitch black outside. I moved it inside the barn and it still functions fine, the door closes a bit earlier. The girls have all been up on the roost for at least an hour before it closes. There are windows on the west wall of the barn, no other light comes in and the door still opens in the morning.
I'm an ol' farm boy and I just love your videos. The family dynamic and the cooking are special to me. I love how you give thanks at meal time. Blessings on you all as you continue.
Dear Al, I hope you and your family make a quick recovery from your Fall cold. Use plenty of vitamin C, drink lots of fluids and rest as much as you all can. May God continue to bless you and your family.
The new coup door looks real sweet! Our neighbor tinkered together his own solar automatic chicken door that worked real well most of the time. His froze up occasionally in the winter from water melting on it and refreezing. He turned the coup towards the sun -- which helped, but he still had to use a heat gun to thaw it on occasion. Everything is looking great!
Good morning Al and family! I started following y’all around the time y’all got Hope. I have gained a wealth of information from y’all. Raising pigs to butchering chickens. A refresher course on my carpentry skills with the barn build and It has been a privilege to watch your little farm grow. Thanks for sharing y’all are truly a blessing to us all. 🙏🏼❤️🇺🇸
Goooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia , Willow seems to know when you are not watching her and uses that opportunity to nibble the foam. I think that you need to cover at least that section as soon as possible. You don't want to have a sick goat ! I see the goats near New Yolk City. I think the goats are trying to stay near where you are. Gina , some folks add a little milk to their scrambled egg mixture. For a different taste , try some orange juice instead with a touch of nutmeg. It's a favorite with my granddaughter.
Just love everything about your channel...your family, your homestead, your animals, all your amazing homestead projects (big and small), your personality and all your very thoughtful reflections at the end of your videos! Thanks for sharing your lives, and your journey with us!
These videos really do bring joy to my day. From seeing how loving and caring your family seems to the way Al just casually talks to the animals as he does his work. Those animals seem so happy and like they know how much they are loved and appreciated!
Interesting idea for the door. We started our homesteading journey tis year after starting to watch you last year. It has been awesome! We love it. Winter is fast approaching, and lots of work still to be done.
😂😂😂😂 the chicken laughing!!!!😂😂😂😂😂. Don’t know if it was laughing at you or the fact the skunk is being locked out!! I keep going back listening to the chicken laugh!!!😂😂😂😂
Salutations from Eagle Lake Tx. 60 miles west of Houston. Tanner is getting the idea of herding well now! On his own? Thanks to the company for the automatic door opener! You guys definitely deserve all the extra help in caring for all the farm chores you complete daily. Milking room door looks great! Love your show watch every day. Love seeing more of Gina now! And her and Olivia's crafted sign for milking room door.
You and esp. your wife are fantastic cooks! When i was growing up that's how we ate, factory work etc. .. it all faded away, i miss it. Your Daughter is very well behaved and happy. a joy to behold!!! It's great to see you you know how fortunate ya"ll are! I have 25 acres and have let it go down, cause of health reasons, and other bad things.
Figaro the Project Manager/Supervisor/Foreman! Love it!! :D Very cool electronic chicken door :) Those chickens are hilarious :D They are so vocal when u r trying to talk lol
New recipe I have been enjoying this week- 1 egg, 1T parmesan, 1T flour, 1T shredded cheddar,Green pepper diced, scallions. Mix together and pour into a hot waffle maker(one square). You could easily put ham or sausage into this. I like smoked salmon on top.
Al, those AA batteries wont work well in your winter. Maybe, build small boxed in overhang with angled top and add Solar Charger Power Bank 25000 mAh Portable Charger 3 Output Battery Pack and attach to top and connect to USB of coop door unit. Keep up the Great work!
I'm not so sure about this.... I can't see the morning being a problem. But with this new door system, what if all the chickens don't make it inside the coop house in time for the night? I would still keep an eye on them at night to make sure they're all inside. That's my only concern. Other than that, I love it! At 18:43 - "Hey! Excuse me ma'am! Ma'am!”...... What a complete *RIOT!* 😂 She understood exactly what you said! 😃😆😂💕
All of your animals act like they are your pets. That is partially because you all treat them like they are pets. All of those animals are lucky to have such loving owners. My personal favorites are all the goats. Love watching all of your videos, keep them coming.
The new automatic chicken door is great and I hope it keeps the skunks from getting in this year! Lol its so much fun watching the goats getting used to the pasture and exploring. Always get to start the day with a smile as long as I watch you guys. Have a blessed day!
Can't believe how cold its getting there already....BRRR!!! Still in the upper 90's here in No CA, low tonight of 68. I look forward to you finishing the milking room with boards, that will cure Willow's nibbles! Thanks for sharing! :)
The pasture gate chain would be easier to use if the chain were bolted to the wood post. No more having to feed it through the eye bolt. If you wanted a trial run to see if you liked it, move the clip from the gate to the eye bolt.
We put pieces of rubber over our door handles so they won’t freeze when it snows or rains. Nothing worse then chains and gate locks frozen and you’re in a hurry trying to stay warm. I always wished we had a door that was automatic...sometimes predators will still come to feast during the day....good luck....🐔
Thank you for always adding your encouraging words at the end of your videos. They are SO needed in today's world! That chicken door is the bomb! You don't need anymore skunk adventures! LOL! Hoping you all get well soon; head colds are the worst! Blessings from NE Missouri!
I have been catching myself humming "Burdens" since Al told me the name of the song and I listened to the whole song on UA-cam. Really great song. Nice install today, hope it keeps those stinkers out. Good luck.
Thank you for sharing your life and words of encouragement. I look forward to watching your videos everyday and actually miss you and your family on the days that you don't post. God Bless you and yours. ken
I would imagine the door uses the same photocell that turns on your landscape lights! No need for direct sunlight, when it is dark enough it activates! Very simple! Something to keep snow from building up in the tract seems necessary though, maybe a mini awning like those that go over an outside door for a house. It would then resemble a high fluting hotell in New Yolk City!
Sometimes I pause when you all sit down to eat and then I sit down with my food, then press play. I slow down the video so we eat together.🤤mmm french toast looked yummy. I had eggs, bacon, grits, wheat toast and a waffle with decaf coffee. Then I had a gala apple.
I got the surprise of my life today. I went to our little store in Ryndon Nevada; an unincorporated town and what do I run into??? A gentleman wearing a T shirt that said Lumnah Acres. We are right off Interstate 80 so lots of people from all over pass by here but few actually stop lol. So tickled to see another fan of Al, Gina and Olivia :)
May I suggest that you build a little roof with sides as low as possible over the control box and the upper portion of the door. This would allow some protection from snow and ice accumulating on the box and cable to the door. Just like car-doors, in your climate, on occasion, I fear the door could freeze open or closed.
I have the AdorStore automatic coop door. It is amazing. An automatic door is a must and makes keeping chickens so easy. I also have an automatic feeder and waterer...
I am happy to see Tanner doing his job; some behavior shaping and that little guy is going to be a great herding dog. Just don't tell Willow she is not in charge anymore ;)
@@LumnahAcres You say improve a little each day? How about all of you learning to eat with your mouths shut and learning how to eat using a knife and fork? Because if you do not teach your daughter when she gets much older she will be called a hill Billie lacking polite manners.
She is/was nosing it. Please be cautious with your daughter & the pigs. I suggest that only you get into the pen now & the ladies stay away. oz of prevention Going to be a moot point & bacon for the freezer soon. Just been to many pig attacks on people & smaller folks are more at risk. Copperheads are a bad time in the south but, not life threatening unless your a child or have a poor immune system.
I've been attacked by a pig once. I was at a friend's house who had a farm. She was a coworker from when I worked at a store called Blain's Farm & Fleet. I went to pet it, I didn't realize I was crossing his boundaries. And then he came after me and brushed his razor sharp whiskers against my leg and drew blood! It really stung. I had no idea a pig could/would do all that. And I didn't know his whiskers were like sharp knives! My friend didn't forwarn me about this. But she apologized after it happened. She was still so nice. 😊
Very good start to a beautiful day watching your video. I hope you & Olivia get to feeling better. I hope the chicken coop is now predator free with the new door. Wow, it almost seemed like that chicken was clucking its 2 cents in on the door. She even had to try it out & still was fussed up over the new door. lol
When you have a kiddo in school..its like living with Typhoid Mary. Trust me I had 6 in school who shared constantly. Love your channel. Be safe. Bless you.
I use a CowTech chicken door. Allows me to control what time and temp the door will open too, also when it closes it pushed the door down so it stays locked closed even when chickens make a mess under the door.
I hope you are feeling better soon. I just got over that head cold too. Seems to be allergies that turned into s cold for me. God bless! Thank you for the video.
I thought I had made our little chick pen was safe. But a young, smaller skunk got in one place and got one of our baby ducks. 😪 We love breakfast food for supper. My daughter adds just a little vanilla to the french toast and it's wonderful. Happy home grown eating. Will have to improve outside wire.
I've used this same unit for over three years and the thing I've learned is to be very careful changing batteries. The wire leads wore and broke where they came out the back of the enamel coating of the circuit board after three years. I bought another and Chicken Guard said I could send the broken part back for repair. (Haven't done it yet but I need to do it soon.
That is a very useful way to manage the chicken coop door, the only thing I wondered about is this how easily can you check that the door has closed or opened on time and not been stuck, e.g. by ice. A red LED with a microswitch or a magnetic sensing door switch could easily perform that function. Others have suggested adding some weather protection to deflect the rain and snow, that sounds like a necessity with the wild winter coming. How often will you have to change the batteries? A solar charging function could be useful to keep things topped up. Obviously you still have to collect eggs, add feed and water and be certain that all is well.

18:00 If the door is going to automatically close "at dark" how can you guarantee A) that the birds will be inside or B) that more skunks/whatever don't get in there before the door closes? A wee bit confused here.
Here in RI, we've not come close to a frost yet, but I do dread it.That will be the end of my daily greenbean harvest. The kids are getting SO big! Figuro wants to hang out with his PEEPS! "Excuse me ma'am, ma'am! Shhh!- Thank you!" Lmao! Thank you for sharing your wonderful life! Your family, your lifestyle, give me hope that the future CAN exist in a fulfilling way! Your animals are happy, the farm is sustainable!
Wouldn't having the door close at sundown or 7:30 whichever is later be better than whichever is earlier? If it closes before sundown will all the chickens be in it?
Al, you don't want to hear this but ... I suggest you modify the reframing for the door so you have a barrier to keep the birds from dragging bedding out the door. It will inevitably end up keeping the door from closing fully. Also I live in a similar climate to you, I suggest you give the birds a front porch with a roof and 2 sides to keep the snow and ice out of the track the door runs in.
Looked into a chicken when I started my flock but they don’t make opens that open left to right. You are so charming Al!! Breakfast for dinner! My favorite!
I was going to say that too, just two hours later. Build an overhang to protect the door from bad weather. Make it so it slides on and off, or up so you can put new batteries in the chicken door. Your chickens are such talkers, hey Al what is going on with that door??? Have you seen the super large chickens on Dannel's channel? Too bad the sunflowers and squashes and zukini got a late start. Have a great day!🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐤🐣🐣🐔🐓🐤🐣🐣🐣🐔🐓🐤🐣🐣🐔🐔🐤🐤🐣🐣🐔🐔🐓🐤🐣🐣🐔🐔🐓🐤🐣🐣🐔🐔🐓🐤
I was going to say the same thing. Remember all the times he had trouble opening the old door. Or since it is battery operated not solar and works on a timer why not mount on the inside?
Yeah, I think that a good sized overhang with sides (forming a small tunnel in front of the door) will be needed to keep snow and ice off those tracks. Maybe if it is built from greenhouse plastic and/or plexi-glass it will still allow enough light in for the sensor to work. Keeping New Yolk City facing South would help too.
Good morning Lumnah family. Another great video to go along with my morning coffee. Love the automated chicken door, and look forward to seeing how it holds up to your winter. Would like to add don't let your guard down due to it being a electronic device. We love breakfast for dinner as well. Have a blessed day.
Cold, flu and allergy deterrent - 1/2 cup grape juice, 1tsp elderberry syrup and 1TBS "local" honey every morning from Sept 1st thru April. Must be local honey so your body learns to tolerate local pollens. This was given to me by an elderly woman who is well versed in Native American medicine. She is full blooded Cherokee. It has really worked!
No pooping on the tools or the wood.. that might only be funny if you actually have chickens. I’m thinking I need to investigate that door for myself. I wonder how the skunks got past both fences? It’s gotta be great with Gina being home now. Breakfast supper is the best.. huge fan of biscuits and gravy and scrambled eggs, sausage yum, yum.. gotta eat now so thank for that 😁
Thank you for that song title. I love it..now i can listen when i'm driving! ♥ Love that chicken door... you are making me want to raise chickens again!
Could you put your copper morans in the male goat barn? They could be on the babies fenced side, and you could make the door solid, so they're seperate from Zeke & Caleb. But you could gather eggs from inside the goat feeding/bed area.
Wow! I love what you've did with the farm. I took a break for 2 months. I was working on my mini farm lol. Turkeys. Chickens. And rabbits. Your progress is on point!
Save the old door from NYC for the new chicken coop. I love the handle. Since they will be the elite chicken with breeding the new coop could be Manhattan. ❤🌅🌵
Thankfully, I haven't seen a skunk on my acreage yet. What I was thinking, though, is that you could take a section of one of those clear panels that you used in the goat barn, then maybe use a heat gun to soften it enough to make a L, drill a couple of holes in it, then attach it right over the sensor for the chicken door. That way the light sensor is not affected and the sensor is protected from the weather. Might need a bit of rubber to keep the bracket snug to the coop. Just a thought.
I'm so jealous of your frosty morning! It was 99° (111° "real feel") yesterday here in the DFW area. Certainly didn't feel like the first day of fall. Enjoyed your video as always!

Ain’t none of your other chickens got a personality like CWC. Miss her. Andy too! Your little free range flock were awesome 😔
Yea. Willow wouldn’t like that. 😆 we not tell her.
@@LumnahAcres You say improve a little each day? How about all of you learning to eat with your mouths shut and learning how to eat using a knife and fork? Because if you do not teach your daughter when she gets much older she will be called a hill Billie lacking polite manners.
I love it that the goats follow you around and that they are totally okay with the dogs 🐶😍
Why don't you put some scrap wood in front of Willow so she won't eat the foam? It would be easily removed if you sheath the room.
"but it's *right there* and it looks tasty, human!!" - Willow
@@violantederojas6188 peaky blinders?, lock stock & two smoking barrels?
I think he’s going to cover all the foam. He just can’t do everything as fast as we think of it. Haha
So glad I live in Georgia now. Just planted my fall and winter turnips, chard, mustard greens, rutabaga and beets this past week.
Very good start to a beautiful day watching your video. I hope you & Olivia get to feeling better. I hope the chicken coop is now predator free with the new door. Wow, it almost seemed like that chicken was clucking its 2 cents in on the door. She even had to try it out & still was fussed up over the new door. lol
Good Morning Lumnah Acres time to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch another great video................
When you have a kiddo in school..its like living with Typhoid Mary. Trust me I had 6 in school who shared constantly. Love your channel. Be safe. Bless you.
You guys are doing a great job and working as a team. Good job Al
Love being able to see the goats wander around the pasture. I also love the chicken noises.
The farm is looking good.❤️🐐🐓
I use a CowTech chicken door.
We love breakfast food for supper.

Verse 1
Hold onto hope, don't let go, and don't give up
There's rest for your weary soul, and time to heal it
Still you fight with what you're told,
and hold onto your scars and wounds and past of old
Chorus
And I said Ooo what would you do,
if you could lose, all your burdens?
And I said Ooo my words are few,
but I love you, those words please hear them
Verse 2
I can't begin to comprehend, what you've been through
I wish it was all pretend, just an awful dream
But please don't let your heart grow dead,
For God restores and brings hope and grace and truth and life
Verse 3
Grace is the reason why, we're both alive
So we'll pour out grace until we die
Thanks for sharing the lyrics. They are beautiful.
18:00 If the door is going to automatically close "at dark" how can you guarantee A) that the birds will be inside or B) that more skunks/whatever don't get in there before the door closes? A wee bit confused here.
I thought those doors were normally installed on the inside. The string and controller won't last long in the weather. Blessings to all.
Morning All, wondering if the night camera has picked up anything as yet in the pasture. Excellent video as always, many thanks.
Nothing yet.
That hen sure was giving you what fer wasn't she 😁. "hurry up, all that noise is making me anxious".😂
My favorite!
you might want to build a overhang over the chicken door to shield from snow
@@dalehenderson3526 seeing how it worked by a string I don't believe you can do that
@@dalehenderson3526 ~ It closes at the time you select, OR sundown, whichever comes first. An awning late in the day might simulate sundown?
Like the rock wall. Do you have to face the new chicken door to the south to be in the sun to work best?
Breakfast supper is the best.. huge fan of biscuits and gravy and scrambled eggs, sausage yum, yum.. gotta eat now so thank for that 😁
It was either grounded out or they climbed the tree and dropped in.
It’s a real treat to watch you and your family. You have such a great lifestyle please keep posting videos well done.
Thanks for taking us on your homestead journey.
Love you'll! Love and hugs from Texas.
Wow! I love what you've did with the farm. I took a break for 2 months. I was working on my mini farm lol. Turkeys. Chickens. And rabbits. Your progress is on point!
Thanks for adding the music info in your subtitles.
Great idea with the chicken door! Hope it works out well for you!
Better put some silicone spray lube to keep the moisture away from it to keep it from freezing up God bless have fun
Save the old door from NYC for the new chicken coop. I love the handle. Since they will be the elite chicken with breeding the new coop could be Manhattan. ❤🌅🌵
or Henhatten!
Or Manhentan
A note: at meal blessing time, we connect by holding hands. Y’all are such a sweet family.
Love the new coop door 😊 I have one and they are wonderful. 👍
Last winter you were pounding on that door to get the ice to break loose, love the new door hope it works
If you want to keep ice off Gina's windows, move the tractor. That chicken door will ice up if you don't cover it.
Feel better soon guys! Thank you for putting the artist and song in the video.
I'm so jealous of your frosty morning! It was 99° (111° "real feel") yesterday here in the DFW area. Certainly didn't feel like the first day of fall. Enjoyed your video as always!
LOL! now that funny when the dog peeping over the counter top, just drooling over that french toast.
