- On this episode of the MalloryBros. Podcast, the fellas start with some New Years reflection and talk about how they brought the new year in. Terrance went to see Avatar, so the guys talk about the theater experience and Terrell dishes some hate towards the films storytelling. They then speak to coming out of the holidays and share more personal resolutions. The guys then speak to Damar Hamlin's on-field injury and the impact it had on the visual of American Football. They speak specifically to how parents may or may not want their kids to take into football because of the risk of injury. Terrance challenges the validity of some of the support and points out opportunistic endeavors by some celebs. The guys then speak to the "Soft Life" trend, specifically the soft life of Black Men. Terrance doesn't hold back, and Terrell gives his thoughts to the why. This segment was a lil edgy. Terrance parallels the stress in his life to "Jean Jacket" from Jordan Peele's NOPE, which is a cool conversation about ignoring the stressors in your life. They speak a little bit to the workplace, give movie suggestions of the week, and make picks for the final week in the NFL's regular season.

😂The "soft life" convo was really interesting hearing it from an American perspective. The term here in South Africa is VERY popular in mainstream media and it doesn't revolve around femininity/masculinity.
When we say we wanna live the soft life, we're basically saying that we wanna live life to the fullest. We want nothing but rich people problems or as we call it here, "nice life problems". That's like the goal or motto for anyone hustling out there, is to put in the hard work...so you can eventually live the soft life/rich life.
We more so associate soft life with wealth instead of being feminine or redefining masculinity. So we can say it's a term that got lost in translation as the tik tok version or should I say American version of soft life...isn't what it's originally supposed to be.
I hope this brought somewhat awareness to the real meaning of the term as Africa did initially popularize it.

I’m glad y’all touched on the “soft man” topic. I mostly agree with y’all’s points, and agree that the image being portrayed is just a healthy lifestyle. But I think Terrell had a good point on how this kind of trend only arises because of the general perception of black men, and this is a reaction to that by going farther in the other direction. Also, while I don’t think the lifestyle being portrayed is “soft”, I think there is something to unpack about why we react so negatively to the idea of a “soft” man.

@@nadircozy you never heard of a homonym before? Words and terms throughout every language on the planet, for centuries, sometimes take on different meanings...slang and otherwise. Nobody redefined the word "man" here - they simply used the term "soft life" to describe a man being comfortable in his own definition of masculinity. "Soft" is in reference to the comfort part.
That said, my point is that Terrance practically refused to acknowledge what the point of it was. Nobody's forcing his to follow the movement, yet he's throwing away the whole philosophy [that he agrees with yet refuses to say] just over a word.

My parents didn't let me play football growing up for fear of injury. Ended up falling in love with basketball and eventually going D1 for track. If my future kids really really wanted to play football I would let them, because that sport may become the best thing for them in a lot of ways; but I would still prefer them to not because as a parent I would hate the chance of a crazy injury like that to ever happen to my kid. Of course it could happen in alot of other ways too, but like yall said, playin football there is literally a 100% chance of injury, big or small.

Yo I bought tickets to go watch it in Dolby Cinema 3D and sat in the very first row in the middle and I surprisingly loved the experience for someone who would never sit in those seats. That “soft life” of a black man is some BS. It’s like people are trying to redefine what it means to be masculine.
Masculinity and aggressiveness aren’t synonymous. Does being aggressive has it uses? Yes. Like in sports, self defense, or when you’re trying to push through a workout.
The way that dude described “soft life” is what masculinity already is. Masculinity is confidence, stoic, calm, stern, quiet, certainty, focus, responsibility.
So if I’m taking care of my health as a 30 year old black man, I’m living my “soft life” now? 😂 This world is full of clowns.
