They are a great exercise but less of an entire strength building exercise due to not being able to externally load weight. Deadlifts are my favourite exercise and have fixed my back once i took ego lifting out of it and really focussed on my form :)
Hi, I can easily do 10 of them, but I notice that I tend to keep contact with the bar in order not to lose the balance. Do you think it is a mistake? Amazing core stability, anyway!
Over time you will gain a stronger core and be able to do it without touching the bar. try at at the top when you lock out to keep a straight body and bring your legs forward and control them to the ground then rest to improve the exercise :)

Doing this exacerbates my lower back pain. Maybe I should build more core strength first?

Yes, but is more posterior deltoid engagement, cuz it's more pushing movement than pulling. It could improve your victorian on floor
