I was a paid beta tester for this game back in early 99. I was a senior in high school at the time, my friends were jealous. There were more courses than what was in the final release. There was only a single downloadable course, if I remember right, and I think I have it archived. I was told there was never a Crash 2 due to sales and how many tech support calls we had because of DirectX issues. The company ended up buying The Learning Company, which was Softkey, Broderbund, and Parsons Technology. Yeah... that Bob Parsons of GoDaddy. I worked at the Hiawatha / Cedar Rapids Iowa office. I still have hot wheels boxed that they gave to me for being an employee at the time. If i find the level I have I'll archive it and make it available, but I only remember one, not six. Stunt Track Driver that came out around the same time was much more popular.

    • @MikeDest

@Jan Steenstra The downloadable track I remember was just a single zip file that you had to manually put in a certain directory. it was kind of advanced for the time.

Hey, I've been reverse engineering this game. Finding the built-in editor windows as well as references to a console. There's some missing data though that was cut from the retail version that makes some things not work. If you do happen to come across the beta, could you archive it in some way? Maybe this version has some more secrets :)

This was not the only time Criterion Games were inspired by a game from another publisher, the whole Burnout idea was taken from a 1998 Arcade game from Konami called Thrill Drive, which had you driving through different courses(countries in this case), while avoiding crashing to achieve more points, just like in Burnout! The game was very popular and common in Japan, with its last game(Thrill Drive 3) being released in 2004 for the Arcades, however the Arcade board is just a PHAT PS2 on an Arcade cabinet, and it can be actually played on the PCSX2 emulator.

I played this game as a kid and I remember the downloadable levels. When we downloaded them there were four available. Maybe they made another two at some point, but my dad only ever got four to download. This is what they were to the best of my memory.
Level 1: This one was just an intersection out in the middle of an open area. Periodically, three cars would drive up and move through the intersection just narrowly missing one another before driving away. There may have been a few smaller objects like benches or a fire hydrant around, but the main goal was to time it so you crash into all 3 cars at once.
Level 2: This one was basically a remix of the one level where you're on top of two skyscrapers. I think it also used the big satellite dish from that one level in the first group of stages. This one was probably the least memorable.
Level 3: This one was my favorite and pretty memorable since it didn't seem to reuse a lot of assets. You started on one side of a canyon. There was a rope bridge going across the canyon and on the other side was a building and a water tower. All along the canyon wall were mineshaft entrances. If you tried to go across the rope bridge it would just break, so the way I remember beating it was launching the car into one of the mineshaft entrances. Then after a few seconds, the car would come out another entrance on the other side of the rope bridge, smash into the water tower, which would then fall over destroying the building and the rope bridge.
Level 4: This one's kind of a mystery since it never loaded properly. I could still play it, but it just appeared as a few objects inside of a blue void. You seemed to start at the top of a hill with a curvy path going down it lined with railings. There were a couple cars on the path and a trolley driving by at the bottom of the hill. Based on the level thumbnail, my dad thought it was probably supposed to be based on Lombard Street in San Francisco, but it was hard to tell since most textures and objects didn't load.

2 games at once because.. There was a "buy two get one free" deal, so I got Hot Wheels: CRASH! for free. Nice!
While none of those games really held a candle to Velocity X, they all still won a very special place in my heart. I CLEARLY remember certain elements of each game and am often sort of surprised by how little people seem to know about them. I remember CRASH! in particular being a little lackluster at the time compared to what I was used to, but I still played the heck out of it. Such a simple game!
The Stunt Track Driver games seem to be the only ones that anyone really remembers, which is honestly kind of a shame!

More Hot Wheels.... zoom! I see Demolition Racer there Clint- reckon we'll get to see that in the future? I'm only used to the PSX version so having the lowdown on the PC port would be nice! :D

Oh man this game was really something for me back in the day. My parents bought it for me from Best Buy or something and I was SO excited for it, it looked so cool and I could NOT wait to get home and play it. Unfortunately, our PC wasn't quite up to the task, so the graphics were basically just black abstract shapes in a blue void, just totally unplayable. Took it back and got something else, can't remember what. Was a shame because I wanted nothing more than to just crash the shit outta some virtual Hot Wheels. This is a vindicating video.
Cool to see the Mattel mention and the works of other developers making content for that brand as well, you should definitely look at the Caterpillar Construction Zone series sometime if you get the chance, I played those at least as much as I played Stunt Track Driver, and they were a lot of fun. Great video as always!

I just remember one thing about this game. The horribly balanced audio sound effects! OMG hearing the ERRRRRRRRRRTTTT of the final object in a level that goes red.. That was SO much louder then everything else in the game haha

I remember playing this game all the time as a kid. It was like the crash mode in the old burnout games long before that series even existed.
I think I even remember going to the website and getting more levels. I remember I got a hotwheels screensaver that was just a program you opened up in fullscreen with a picture of a hotwheels car on it. Doing the exact opposite of what a screensaver was for.

0:06 greetings from Hungary! Insane is still one of my favorite game of all time.
This Hot Wheels game is sadly not as good as I hoped, but some maps of the game remind me on Carmageddon 2, what is another favorite of mine. :D

I sunk SO many hours in this game as a kid. The Volcano level took me forever.
This, Stunt Track Driver 1+2, Army Men II, and Re-Volt are what what my childhood consisted of.

Played this at the time as a kid and loved the hell out of it. Had a lot of fond memories playing it with my mom, who seemed to like it for its puzzle-y gameplay too. Honestly, it was a pretty genius idea that I'm surprised hasn't really happened more often.

I remember the promotional CDs for Planet Hot Wheels (rip) had a demo for CRASH on them, with just the level where you drove down the hill street and off the dock at the end. I must've played that demo a thousand times lmao, I never had the full game growing up

I used to play this ALL the time as a kid, I was fortunate enough to have some CTX EZ notebook with a K6 2 as a kid. Some laptop my sister had in college that a repair shop said was unfixable that I some how repaired as a child. :) This game, Frogger, and Tarzan I played on that little laptop ALOT. Such memories.

I saw a documentary about Hot Wheels vs. Matchbox. Matchbox was all about realism while Hot Wheels was all about hot rods, action and fun. Hot Wheels really knew how to market to boys and this is perfect evidence of that! I would have loved this as a kid.

I vaguely remember playing this as a little kid in the early 2000's. It looks exactly as I remember it, nostalgic 90's polygons and all. Good to finally know the name of the game. I could never beat it tho, lol.
