It’s crazy people literally cut pieces off of coins!!

You could make a profit doing that, too. Because of the way they were made by hand, often the coins weren't truly circular, so nobody would notice a little bit of silver shaved off the edge. Over time if you did that to a lot of coins you could melt the silver down and sell it on as bullion.
