I always shy away from drawing full scenes and backgrounds because I get intimidated by how hard perspective is for me. Seeing how you approach it in a more casual and experimental way (and also the idea of using basic shapes to place characters and objects) really helped reduce some of that anxiety. Thank you for being so transparent about your process! Your videos are always a joy to watch.

@@KitKatToeBeans of course but adding backgrounds can feel scary because it means you’ve already drawn a piece you like. it can create anxiety around “ruining” the art.

Hey! It's been a while since you've posted this but I want to share my two cents with you. I used to hate drawing backgrounds. Then I think in 2018 or 2019 I did Scaptember (landscape September) and I made like 20+ paintings. Then I fell in love with landscapes. I've so far sold three landscape paintings and gifted many more to friends and family. It all started with a challenge that was, well, challenging. I hope you can overcome your shyness! It actually feels great on this side of that struggle.

I love that you're so honest with everything. Don't see many artists admitting to artblock and basically just doing whatever they want and I think that's refreshing from watching most artists on here trying to hold up this image of perfection. Art isnt perfect, it's messy, there is really no right or wrong if you enjoy yourself, and sometimes you just dont feel like it, thank you for being so honest ❤❤

I love this too. I learned the importance of sketching and iteration before you work on a final piece in art school. I don't see that mentioned enough on art UA-cam. People need to see this full process to better understand that artists aren't married to a final look which is sure to breed constant disappointment. That alone is part of being an artist. It's constant problem solving. Thank you for showing a true representation of how a piece comes together!

I think the pan being on fire really works to bring in a feeling of togetherness. Like "oh shit, the stoves on fire! We could put it out, OR we could just stay here and chill a bit longer" The colors also help the vintage feel.

I use the glazing technique too! it's a really easy way to express light i read somewhere that to have more contrast/dramatic effect the colour of the glaze depends on the light like if it's a warm yellow then the things in shadow should be glazed a cool blue i believe i love your artwork i can never do clattered backgruds... or backgrounds in general lol nice work!

I watch a lot of artist's videos. I rarely learn as much as I learned from your drawing and your explanations as you go along. I hope you find the confidence that your skill DESERVES as you go along so that you realize you don't have to apologize so much. Your perspective, for instance: you are drawing a cartoon! Wonky perspective is almost a requirement. Your barely-less-than-perfect perspective lends interest to the piece! Anyway - thank you for this video, from another artist/dabbler with imposter's syndrome. 🥰

Paper makes ALL the difference. The absolute least I try to do when it comes to watercolour is make sure I have cotton paper. I also prefer Hot Presse paper. If you prefer smooth paper it may be worth trying out. It's amazing for both little details, and things like technical plant paintings. I like to paint realistic succulents so I love it. It's also my go-to for pen and ink art.
I actually got Canson XL and it nearly caused me to full out quit watercolour. It had me convinced that I was not actually good at painting and the previous three or so succulent paintings were a fluke. Thing was, it wasn't me. It was the paper. You can't scrub or glaze or blend or anything. Now I use the Canson for basically scrap, testing paints on, or card making (which it is AMAZING for because I like to just do basic free flowing wet on wet between a few colours with penned designes or a pasted artwork on top. It's also excellent for tags. I use it a lot around gift giving holidays.

Im going to weigh in here as both an artist and an old person 😁 Because I get the impression that you know you have talent, but you haven't yet figured out that your chaotic approach IS your superpower. I just spent a few hours watching watercolour tutorials because I find it super relaxing watching other people paint. There were flowers and a dragonfly and a dark misty forest... and all of the tutorials were calm and precise and now I've seen ALL the blending and negative painting and pretty things... But i wasn't actually excited about any of it.
Then your video popped up and my brain immediately needed to know HOW IN THE WORLD that happened. Because your style and ideas are way cool. And WAAAAY outside my comfort zone. Which is much more interesting than lily pads.
Im not sure how many artists you know personally irl, but that chaos you own is a universal thread. Its "The Creator Gene"... It means you MUST create. Lots of people paint or sculpt or whatever because its fun. But other artists will recognize you as their people BECAUSE of that part of you. Your procrastination is your brain reformatting. It's not a negative, it's part of why you can do what you do... just the other side of it. And your 'lack of focus' is actually your brain running at a speed that your hands and mouth have a tricky time keeping up with... so you think you lost focus but actually you're just pausing to rewind so your body can catch up.
Im typing all this because as a part of the generation that helped uphold both the system you live in, and the stigmas and mentality that say these are negative qualities, (sorry) I think its important to point out that they are in fact the things that make you superhuman. And a FANTASTIC artist. Im very happy you are on UA-cam connecting with others who might need to see that their chaos is part of their genius.

This looks incredible - It gives me that "stacks" vibe from "Ready Player One"... It's very cluttered, and claustrophobic, but also cozy and warm. The fire doesn't really distract, as much as it draws your eyes upward from the fish to the fire, since they are the same color, into the rest of the piece. Maybe this was their version of a cozy fireplace - just making do with what they had. Maybe they intentionally set it so they could get that fireplace feel, without actually having any room for a fireplace. Well, done! Very interesting and thoughtful! I really enjoyed the strategy with the lighting, your thought processes, and your execution. Subbed, bub.
