Having visited the Kingdom several times over the past decade I have witnessed the general growth of the economy and the lifting of people from poverty.
But the growth has been very uneven. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of luxury cars in Phnom Penh but still many people relying on bicycles with a seeming lack of a “middle class”. There is still much that needs to happen to ensure that the increasing wealth is shared throughout the Kingdom.
Yes, but some of that wealth does trickle down. With new investment in manufacturing jobs, we think Cambodia will steadily improve 😀
Cambodia just reduced poverty in half… government needs more time and international investment/ resources to reduce more… $$$ is tricker down…

I live in Kampot and have done so since before the Sea Horse was built. I watched it grow, finish. It opened a few days before Khmer New Years and has been a smash hit for Kampot from the start. You especially notice it on weekends as often riverside drive is at times gridlocked or very close to it. There seems to be no end to the visitors, but most are locals. It looks especially beautiful at night. It has been great for Kampot businesses. Please just keep doing what you're doing. :)

Thank you Claire & Jeremy, amazing ending to the Temple after riding along the red dirt road👍. I spent a week in Koh Kong village years ago, it was so lovely walking on those red streets under the shade of the palm trees and others, and looking at the traditional old Khmer houses and gardens.

Great to see the lush green environment after that much needed rain. Nice ride. Good to hear about the lessening poverty rate. Smallholding rice farmers get a bit left behind as the economy modernises, but I would rather see subsidies than industrial scale farming. I hope the clean-up will include the piles of asbestos from all the renovations. Keep well

Help me out here. Most videos I see on UA-cam that are South East Asia countries seem to be directed towards men meeting women. I'm just thinking about retirement in SE Asia but not sure if I'll fit in since I'm a single woman.
There are loads of women and many of them single. You will have no trouble at all meeting them once you arrive. There is a fantastic women-only facebook group, but you can't join until you actually arrive.

Hi Clare, another great video. I have a quick question. I am an American and currently have a condo in Thailand. In November I will be coming to Phnom Penh for a week on Holiday. I would like to open a bank account at ABA bank when I come for my future retirement plans. Do I need a special kind of visa to open a bank account or can I just bring cash and open it on a tourist visa. Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks… and have a great day.
Hi, here is the info from ABA's website:
You can open the account instantly in the ABA Mobile app or at any ABA Bank branch. Here are the requirements for the account opening at our branch:
For foreigners
18 years old and above;
Original and Valid Passport (not expired).
Valid Visa (not expired)-any type of visa approved by The Government of Cambodia is acceptable. Such visas may include, but not limited to a stamp entry visa (for foreigner from ASEAN country members), E-Visa, Visa on Arrival or any other type of visa introduced from time to time by the Government of Cambodia.
Submit one the following documents to proof the residency status:
-A Visa period of 6 months or longer, or
-Many visas which are consecutively issued to the holder, with a combined visa period of not less than 6 months or 182 days, or
-House rental/lease contract, certificate of residential address, hotel lease / bill indicating a tenor of not less than 6-month tenor,
-Proof of employment indicating at least 6-month employment period. Proof of employment may include employment contract, certificate of employment, employee ID with photo (indicating the date of issuance to the date of account opening not less than 6 months or 182 days), or
-Proof of business ownership if self-employed i.e. business license / certificate or patent
Complete our Application form.
Note: Customer must meet all the outlined requirements before opening an account.

Hi Claire, off topic but I have a couple of questions, if I may. First, you mentioned a place on one of your videos (maybe from a year ago?) that was a good place to touch down on arrival. I want to say it was about $160 USD a month? Also, I have never been a fan of lager, I much prefer ales, particularly stout and porter. Are these readily available in bars and stores? TIA, I'll be coming to SR in October when my lease is up here in Thailand.. Cheers.
Found it! Secret Garden Homestay. And now about the beer...
Yeah that's the one. I don't know if it's still operating as they were trying to sell it. Stout is readily available in the supermarkets, not so much in restaurants and smaller bars. The stouts available are a mix of local and imported ones. Hanuman Black is quite nice!

It's such a novelty here, and there is quite a fun craze going on where people are taking really creative photos with it and sharing them. It's a lot of fun and I can totally understand why people include it in their visit to the south.

Stop beating on Cambodia… The Kingdom just reduced poverty rate by half and continues to come down. China funds Serbia new road through Europe… and many infrastructures throughout the world.

Without China's money Cambodia 🇰🇭 wouldn't be able build major infrastructure improvements. It is what it is. 🤷
