    Ed's path is his own. He is the best at being himself. you can't copy him and you can't duplicate his steps. His circumstances are unique and you would do better to go your own way and forge something great yourself out of your own experiences. You got this!

    • @Meow_Ag47
      @Meow_Ag47 5 років тому +6

      You could! I took an ethnographic research methods course because it met some departmental graduate research requirement. The idea was to go out, find a sub-cultural group, and research group dynamics. For example, you could pick exotic cars and go to meets, get to know people, the car lingo, and interview key members of the groups, ect... The requirement was that you had to meet with the group twice weekly.
      Naturally I wasn't that dedicated to researching something that ultimately was completely unrelated to my thesis. So decided to fabricate the entire project. I turned in weekly progress reports, multiple 20-25 page annotated interview transcripts that were completely fabricated. And finally complied all data "collected" over the course of the semester into a 45 page analysis paper and presentation. Got an A in the course and literally made up all my data!

This video helped a lot to back up what he said that no matter what I go for, its going to give me some advantage over other potential job candidates, even if I’m not doing anything with that degree, and now it makes a lot of sense.

    There’s a 4 year University called Northwood University in Midland Michigan. They offer two different majors in the automotive industry ( not mechanical or technical strictly business) and you graduate with a regular BBA. The majors are retail/OEM and aftermarket/manufacturer. They have lots of connections in the industry and work with lots of companies in the industry. Just to chuck it out there since Ed really didn't spend a lot of time on it, engineering _is_ an excellent way to get into the automotive industry. You may end up being the washer bottle guy and not the supercharger guy, but most of it is sill fun and it all has challenges you never dreamed of until you get there.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 5 років тому

      Yes. While still in school I went to work for a company that makes fuel tanks, including those for the Corvette and the Ford GT (05-06, GT), in a manufacturing engineering role, so that was pretty cool. Had to make some plant visits and stuff like that. After that I went to work for Honda's largest world-wide supplier. I moved over to design and was doing window run channels and weatherstrips. I ended up spending a lot of time at Honda's design center in Ohio, which was also really cool. Went from their back to a manufacturing engineering position at a company that makes tools (which I hated and left as fast as I could). Left that job and went into commercial heavy truck design in powertrain and cooling systems (which I absolutely loved. Trucks were a ton of fun). Went from that to project management at a tire company (which I hated). Left there and ended up in white goods design (appliances, mostly refrigerators), which isn't as much fun, but it has its own challenges. So.. Overall, I've spent about 12 years in automotive and about 3 outside of it so far. What I can absolutely say for my engineering training is that any time I've needed a job, I was able to get one with no problem, and if you are truly an engineer at heart you'll find something interesting and rewarding about just about any type of work. What I'm doing now has exposed me to a ton of injection molding which is something I didn't do a lot of in all of my past experience, so that's all been very interesting. Good luck with your studies and on your career!

    THANK YOU, for saying college is a good idea; so many influential UA-cam people sell this, "drop-out, make millions following my ideas/classes," junk.
    I just finished undergrad May 2018, and it was like Ed said, 4 years to learn and experiment with ideas. Who's to say you can't do entrepreneurial things while at school anyway? I sold some exotic cars for people, remote worked for a carbon fiber company, and flipped things plenty, while studying my degree.
    If you are questioning going to school, heavily consider it. A degree holds a TON of value, and your experiences in college will pay off. Like Ed says, and many say in the comments, look at it as a fall-back/stable life if your entrepreneurial wild dreams don't pan out.

I went to college, trade school, and the school of hard knocks. I took a lot of risks during that time and through the success and failure, I still managed to land on my feet. I didn't have an actual "paper" but the things that I learned in college and trade school and through some work experience, I have been fortunate enough to be able to "twist" my education and work experience to get me to the next stop in my career path. Love it! I just switched from a Biotechnology major to Business Administration as what I really wanted to do had nothing to do with my previous major. Possibly saved me a lot of time and effort, that I could use elsewhere, for something that would just sit in my resume.

The school and the Automotive program are bother very highly regarded in the industry, both amongst dealers and in the corporate world. Anyone who is committed to being an automotive professional and is seeking a college education should consider it. It's taken good care of me so far 👍👍👍

I have done plenty of wiring and so many electronic mods, suspension work, cooling system and engine work, and so on. I like math but I really couldn't take the math workload of the mechanical engineering courses. Part of it was just being confused with how everything connected to one another and the other part, honestly, was a general lack of interest.

    So much good stuff to take away from this one. I started out down the Mechanical Engineering rabbit hole... goals changed and back-up plans were already in place to switch to business. College is not required, but it is a great environment to learn about oneself, what you really want and how to get to it. Ed, you would have been dangerous at my business school...
    Planning in advance, adapting your required path to your goals, seeking entrepreneurship opportunities, refining one knowledge (even if it is BS) are probably more important than any degree you can get if you are looking for financial success..... (that and a good tax guy).

    I started college at 14 while in my senior year of high school, and after almost 4 years at that school, plus another year at a tech school later on in life, the only thing I learned was that $50k+ in debt and hardly any pragmatic, real world skills or lessons is a FANTASTIC starting path to being the most educated person in whatever particular restuarant you happen to get a job at.

    You can't get away with turning in the same paper multiple times anymore, or even a revised version of the same thing. Now everything is submitted electronically into a database that detects plagiarism and if you reuse your own paper that is somehow considered plagiarism even though it is your own words.

    Great video. Life is interesting the way that it turns out. I always dreamt of being a race car driver, and really didn't want to go to college. Once I was in college, I met so many amazing people, learned so much about myself, and was able to try so many new things. I got my degree in Automotive Industry Management, and got a job out of college working for Ford in Dearborn. Couldn't stand Michigan for long so I moved back to Colorado and started a detail business on a whim, and now also have a Mustang drift parts business. I'm also chasing my motorsports dreams and won a championship in Drift Colorado last year. Set goals, work hard, and chase your dreams!
