If birds are going into the water, don't go in: Ex-zookeeper on shark attacks | Morning in America

- Three people are recovering after each was bitten by a shark Friday in the Florida Panhandle. Ron Magill, director of communications at Zoo Miami and former zookeeper, discusses why shark attacks may happen more often as the water warms and more people swim in the ocean. Magill says if you're entering the ocean, pay attention to the birds.

"Ex-zookeeper"!? How many great white sharks did this guy supposedly have at his zoo?
I think we need a marine biologist. 😂
@@HowLongOLordFaithfulandTRUE Or maybe just a Commonsenseiologist
@@ghostwalk2446😂😂Lol
🤣🤣🤣
With all due respect Ron , it was an attack . It happens ! They are not calculated but they are simply opportunistic. I am a Florida native , off-shore fisher and former beach bunny . I am a ex Zookeeper too ! Sharks and crocs live in the saltwater and alligators live in freshwater here . Stay alert , stay safe .
I'm FLoridian too ... here you can find sharks crocs and alligators in the same body of water ... I'm not a beach bunny just born and raised from Duval to Dade
@@naomidoner9803you can but most likely not. They do have their normal preferences .
Not a beach bunny anymore but an old lady who was born , raised and still lives in Seminole County.
An attack, only because, for a moment, the shark thought you were food. A dog, or bear,or cat ,or,person is not hurting you to eat you. Mistakes happen….
And then you have creatures like Bull sharks, which can also thrive in freshwater lakes & rivers, n what not
@@toneenorman2135 All it takes is one shark bite, to mortally injure you. Would rather be attacked by a dog
Larry was attacked by a shark, it bit his leg off.
Uhmmm that’s a shame but to clarify, he wasn’t attacked by a shark. His leg and the shark had an encounter.
I am not sure how much this expert actually knows because these shark attacks happened on my stretch of beach and there are always birds going into the water. All sorts of seabirds, pelicans, and ospreys. You won't ever walk the panhandle beaches without seeing birds diving for fish all throughout the day. We have an abundance of fish here. You cannot dictate when the water is safe by that logic. We actually had a pod of orcas swimming off the coast of Destin a few days prior and they most likely had a lot of sharks pushed inshore. There was a strong presence of sharks near shore and that is most likely the reason. And it was probably the same shark as the attacks happened within 4 miles of each other and a little over an hour apart. I swim in these waters regularly and have my entire life. This has been a very rare occurrence.
He’s no expert, he runs a zoo not even an aquarium
I live in CO and I can see he's full of BS from here
always say please stop eating me.
Yes, that should work. Manners are very important !
Always!
Sharks have been around for millions of years, don’t tell me they’re making mistakes about what their food is. And since when does Ron McGill know anything about sharks?! Last time I was at Metro Zoo I sure didn’t see any. Why didn’t they interview someone from Mote or one of the universities that actually study sharks?!
Anybody that knows anything about the ocean knows THAT. You see birds diving into the water, it generally means that they're going after fish, or something else that is probably also going to attract other predators, including sharks.
They are not unprovoked if you’re in their home!
It's a shark attack, let's not sugarcoat things.
yeah...if one limb is missing it is safe to call it an attack😅
Dog attack= dog encounter
"Encounter" is just a kick in the ass to the victim's families too, no way he'd use that term if it were his loved one ripped to pieces
LoL
He's a shark apologist.
Just a little bit misleading. White sharks have a bite and spit hunting strategy, giving a big bite and backing off until the prey expires. They will eat you and the major determining factor in shark bite survival is how quickly can you exit the water. No fault on the sharks. Recreation outdoors requires the assumption of some risk. No seatbelts or safety rails outside.
They're sharks, they attack. Always sugar coating the obvious.
I'm surprised he didn't call them "teen" sharks, just out pranking and having fun,and doing "teen shark" things. Lol
Thank you for the observation ob birds, makes sense to me.
Propaganda bs... protecting Tourism..what a demon
I call them Shark horderves.
Well that just made me feel a WHOLE lot better. I didn't die because the shark meant to eat me. I died because it bit me by accident and I bled out. o_O
It is not a shark attack. It is just a shark going to lunch. 😮😊
let's sanitize it to "incidents" and "encounters".... meanwhile, hungry shark says i'm gonna chomp that person in two. But we do live in a society where we have to minimize hurt feelings. I wonder if the sharks identify as a feather.
😂👍
“Attack” is offensive to sharks!!
Always swim with a partner. -Preferably a slower swimming partner.
Fancy that! Sharks attacked?!? & in other news the water those sharks occupy is… WET!
I got bit by a mchammerhead once. I said to the shark stop can't touch this.
I'm going to Douse in Tabasco sauce sir!
Zookeeper: ha-ha! (spicy)
This triathlete reporter will stop laughing and smiling when she encounters shark during her race😉and then lets see who will laugh🙄
Sharks love duck soup
Sharks don’t have to consume someone in order to ruin their day
Also we’re over fishing and taking away their Habitates so what do you want them to do?!
Sharks could go extinct and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings.
Soon, flying sharks 🦈 will be joining birds on a world human bite challenge.
Oh come on your bit by a vicious dog it's an attack same scenario
So Anna is a triathlete! That explains the hard body! I could tell she was an athlete of some kind.
And of course the male to female newscaster is bragging about being a triathlon as well That's because of that massive clavical shoulders and big feet.... And what's so funny
Touch grass
The news anchor certainly knows how to make the story about her.
Just like in the movies, the Chamber Of Commerce wants all shark bites kept on the down low so it won’t negatively effect money and tourism. 😱👍✌️
Been that way for years
If you're dead, your body being eaten really is no longer the issue - at least to me. Thanks for the "expert" input though!
Sharks know exactly what or who they are attacking. They are much smarter than that. If someone is bit but not eaten they are probably protecting their territory
Yeah or mabey they just bite off a leg and run, sharks are more intelligent than these fools who call themselves experts give them credit for
@@MrVinmanfonzoFast food? Takeout? Meals on wheels... er seals?
Get real serious…it’s a shark they live there why is everyone so surprised Jesus 🤦♂️ go in the sea 100% risk you have to take
Clearly this ex-zoo keeper hasn’t seen the latest shark attacks in Australia 🇦🇺 and South Africa 🇿🇦 and Egypt 🇪🇬 I’d hardly say he had any expertise
Egypt? Have to google it, booked my holiday :(
He spoke in terms of statistics for the population but if you factor in time spent in the water and locations, it probably the likelihood of attacks.
They were throwing kitchen scraps from the resort in the water in the Egypt case. Asking for trouble.
That Egyptian attack was particularly heartbreaking. No way was it mistaken identity.
"mistaken identity" from a predator thats honed its skills over millions of years. "Yep was accident" you think a shark will avoid you because you're a human? you have some weird privelage all other animals dont get?
Um. They still got attacked by a shark. So, a shark attack it is. Tf
Consumed, thats a way to put it...
Lookup the definition of “attack”
except for bulls , tigers and whites...Oh my !
SharkLivesMatter!
0:50 you lost me at, "you're much more likely to win the lottery." the lottery is a system that can be somewhat manipulated it seems. nature is nature bro.... there's risks associated with chance and probability of encounters and that's phuckin' it.
Somehow I just have a fundamental objection to shark bites being equated with winning the lottery. Thanks, no, I don't believe I'll play.🤷♀️
Hal would laugh at this guy.
I agree I love Hal his show is the best
Perhaps Ron McGill doesn't understand that sharks happen? I'll bet if he went into that water he'd be much more afraid of those sharks than they are of him.🦈
There are creatures in the ocean that are more powerful and dangerous than lions, tigers and bears, yet people still take their chances and step into their arena like they’re not constantly on patrol looking for food. You’re virtually playing Russian roulette in the water, but want to act all surprised and shocked when an attack from a shark actually manifest.🤷🏿♂️
Buzzer noise……. It’s a shark attack
this dude appears too often in television, seems like an indenial incompetent guy who loves sharks and hates reality
I don't agree since there are over 500 dead zones and I felt like prey the last time in the Pacific.
Dont swim like a baby seal.
This triathlete reporter will stop laughing and smiling when she encounters shark during her race😉and then lets see who will laugh🙄
Simon Nellist was just swimming for a charity, nothing left to even scoop out. So heartbreaking! Not worth it!
why is everyone insulting the dude? if your at a baseball game and dude hits a foul ball and he smokes someone, is that an attack? no its not. Its an accident. hes right not calling it an attack
I have had a question for yrs now, what does "unprovoked attack" mean???
You better hope it not a Mexican Shark that likes spicy 🌶️
Has anyone asked Sharks to comment??
TELL THAT TO THE LAST 3 PEOPLE IN FLORIDA WHO GOT ATTACKED
Oh no no no! Sharks love hot sauce
Oh yes always a believable expert
tabasco and hot sauce may make you more tasty.
im concubin blonde tabasco or not 🔥
The sharks just want a cuddle
It’s their home, we are guests. 😬
2024 innovation and tech?
Why can’t we have the equivalent of an invisible dog fence with the water to either deter sharks with sound or as a warning that a shark has entered thru it?
Lol @ you think they need to put invisible fence collars on all the sharks 😂 I can't rn
😂Did you know that Florida has 1,350 miles of coastline ?
@@3_up_moon lol. You have heard of the device in the water to be able to detect a tsunami? Something like that.
@@Elizabethvaughan1 we’re not asking Joe Biden to protect it? 🙄
It’s something someone smart like Elon would develop.
@@chaddy-me-boy8299 it would not be cost effective . The chances of someone being killed by a shark is rather rare compared to the numbers of humans invading the water each day . Besides the bunny-huggers would not stand for it as it would likely not be environmentally friendly . Who brought creepy Joe into this discussion ?
What about Shark and Electric Boat?
The shark would high tail it as the fancy electric boat continues to combust underwater.
Six flags has sharks in their aquariums
Ty. Makes sense!
Sharks know what they want to eat. I’ve never mistakenly taken a bit out of a hamburger. 🍔
Do they think it was the same shark?
well..its their home, go in at you own risk. no sharks ringing ur front door doorbell.
They'd just want to sell you an extended warranty.
