Here's a riddle attempt: how can curiosity be interplanetary even if you don't travel away from your home planet in the first place?
When the curiosity you're speaking of is a rover sent to Mars by NASA.

  • @saxbend
    @saxbend 8 років тому +1

gravitationally the effects of this should be the same as just sending a clone of the Sun towards the solar system, with the difference being that a Sun would heat everything else up as it passed while a 1 solar mass black whole would absorb some of the radiation possibly even having a slight cooling effect on other objects while in the region.

Salty peper, they would for the most part just pass through each other were it not for the massive black holes rumored to be at center of all galaxies: in that case as they passed through the centers would encounter these two massive monsters, stars by the millions would be devoured, and the gravitational wake would cause stellar displacement. Finally. In the crowded regions uneffected, there would large amounts of binary systems born.

Should be possible. But since there isnt any mass difference i would say they would orbit eachother about a common centre like a binary star system but tiny. Also in real life something like that wouldnt ever be stable and probably the orbit would decay within a few million years at best and a few hundred thousand at worst. (but still just as fun to watch)

I see so many of these "what if a black hole went through the solar system" vids but frankly I can't help but feel that most folks have a pretty good idea of the cataclysmic results. The video I haven't seen is the one that tests how close different sized black holes could pass from the solar system before effects are felt, and what those effects would be. Maybe start at 1000 AU, see the results over years, and adjust closer or farther away...smaller or larger black hole.

If they're available, try to put 2 or maybe 3 Magnetars together and see what happens. If Magnetars aren't available try just using Neutron stars and see how their mass and magnetic fields interact. Maybe even throw one(or several) into our Solar System.

you can improve simulation performance dramatically by going to settings and going under General > Computation Device, pressing the plus button to the right of it and setting Integration Mode to Fixed, instead of Global Adaptive, the only consequence with using Fixed is if you set time too fast, mercury will fly out of orbit with the sun, but you can do it safely at 4 years/sec with the default simulation, also another thing to note is that Integration Mode will be reset if you change to another simulation or restart the game - but when Sergal uses Global Adaptive, Sergal gets 1400 physics fps while with Fixed, Sergal gets over 3300 physics fps ^v^

Can't take this game for granted its just a game and simulation. in real life if a blackhole passes through our solar system, I highly doubt if any planet would be on its orbit or even close to its orbit they'll get a strong gravitational slingshot or Gravity Assist Maneuver and maybe goes to the abyss of space. and it's probably not gonna be our sun's friend to make or share a binary star system. But it's a nice video and to get the better picture of what if.

Great Video! Just a comment or two: The Earth survived in this scenario, but the with orbit that it's in now, it's still a disaster for us. At closest approach (perihelion), the temperature would easily boil the oceans; and at its farthest (aphelion), the temperature would be cold enough to freeze the (partial?) ocean of water that just fell out of the sky after being boiled. Microbial life would probably survive underground, but the surface would be lifeless. What microbial life there would be underground probably wouldn't support even a small number of people. AND the orbit of Earth now crosses the orbit Mercury. It won't be long before there's either a collision, or Mercury is ejected. Not good at all! Again- great video!

That's cool. I'd be curious to see what happens if the black hole just grazes the edge of the solar system rather than going right through the middle (say, shooting tangentially past Uranus' orbit). However, a black hole of only one solar mass seems unrealistically small; at the very least, it should be five solar masses.
I predict that it would still throw the orbits of the inner planets out of whack and probably spell extinction for humanity by throwing us out of the goldilocks zone (either towards or away from the sun).

Make a solar system with like 20 exoplanets or moons an do a 10,000 year timelapse!

Do they have anything on there to test a cosmic string fragment? or a white hole?

How about a scenario if our Solar system had a Hot Jupiter gas giant close to the Sun, much like 51 Pegasi-b or Wasp 12-b?

Wait a second there m8. after you introduced the black hole, the time dilation would/should have a significant impact. Does the simulator give the experienced time on earth or some kind of constant thing outside of the universe. Because time should go slower for earth and any object that orbits close to the black hole. Though i guess none of it matters, the earth would have no intelligent life. Id say there would be a few random animals at the bottom of the ocean that wouldnt know the difference, but time would go slower for them(relative to us-the outside observer)

+Mr Rishi The Cookie this black hole was only 1 solar mass so I don't think time dilation would have a wide reach but the gravitational impact would be more destructive.

I Declare Shenanigames I completely didn't hear the 1solar mass thing Lol. I then assumed it was a largish black hole. Hence my uninformed comment :P

You said it and many others have commented about our insignificance. I suppose objectively that could be true , but then quantum mechanics seems to tell us the notion of an objective reality may be bullshit too. Even if sentient life is very common out there with bodies that are small like ours, I don't think common-ness or smallness necessarily equates to insignificance just because the big heavy stuff is so indifferent to us. To beings that think and feel, thoughts and feelings are bigger than just about anything else. That IS significant.
Sometimes people ask if trees falling in the woods make sound if no one is there to hear. Of course, even if a listener is nowhere near the falling tree, we call the band of air wave frequencies between 20 and 20kHz that it would surely produce "sound" regardless. I think a better question is: If a universe never develops observers of any kind, did it even exist? We will never know if there are unknown realities. Think about it.
