Thats cruel on that motor, he needs to read the starting instructions, glow plugs for 2 or 3 mins depending on temp then when it fires go back to glow plugs till it runs smooth, no need for all the smoking an knocking going on there.

What a great starter motor ,, pity the glow plugs arent as good theres alot of diesel in the cylinders there easy to break a con rod , the Cummins starts a bit easier ,, the D 9 g and H are great dozers though

Get the glow plugs working! Good way to throw a rod!

I don’t recommend you use an ether because it can ruin bearings in engine

Or alternatively use the preheat for a minute before cranking as you’re instructed to do….. 🙄

Only the old ones had pony motors, I think. Newer ones are electric start. I had a diesel van once that took 90 seconds of preheat to start in cold weather, any less it wouldn't fire.

Bet the valve clearances are way out of spec.

No one ever taught him how to use ether properly. If I saw him do this to one of my machines it would be the last time he ever sat in one. Now if no one has taught him, ok, lesson Number One DON’T do it this way.
You spray the ether into the air intake WHILE you are cranking it! NEVER spray and walk away.

better yet don't use it at all. If the preheat doesn't work, it's not that hard to fix it. Too many folks just reach for the ether. I guess it's legit if you're trying to start something that's been sitting for 10 years but anything that's run at all regularly ought not to need ether.
