I think I would wait till the price drops down to 25 cents
LMAO that's cold essseeee
Big deal! House for a dollar, but no jobs and no opportunities. Put people in the houses to do what? More smoke and mirrors without a viable economy.
live in gary, work in Maryville or chicago, simple as that
My daughter went missing from Gary. She was missing for seven months; very lucky to be alive. She was held against her will. The people that had her kept moving with her in those abandon houses. My grandson lives there now and very afraid for his safety. Gary is not safe place at all.
Darlene Strickland omg that is sad
Wow
Did they go to jail
april love of course not kid
Darlene Strickland I guess she was hanging around the crack dealers😏
so the mayor wont allow investment from outside Gary ,,what a dumb idea
thank you, if you get investor from the outside the home can be fixed up better than what they are now. she can't convince me that these are somewhat descent to live in, if they was she should appreciate that money no where it comes from.
karl wills If she was smart, she would take off those restrictions and let investors buy the houses and flip them. But she would rather let the place stagnate. There is no logic there. I can't fathom anyone with money moving there, buying an old house that they would have to gut, dump money into and live in it for 5 years just to sell it. The situation will not get better with this person in charge. Hopefully someone with an education will come along and be the next mayor.
karl wills
They are trying to keep a certain kind of people there and no other. Then mooch off the rest of US.
karl wills what investment do you see there are you out of your mind.
Fear of gentrification
I'm from Gary and I moved out of there too because the homes in midtown started to get abandoned too. Its sad.
The mayor is just trying to push this burden onto some sucker. She knows this wont work the city just can't afford to demolish these homes and they're tired of people complaining about these eyesores. I know a guy that bought a house in Gary to fix up and rent and when he'd go back to work on the house people had broke in and put holes in the walls and stole the kitchen cupboards and sink. It's sad but there's too many thugs in Gary to make it nice again
They stole the kitchen sink???? Damn! I guess he should have nailed it down.
I'm from indiana and had to go through Gary to get to chicago for a school trip, no offense Gary but just ridding the train was terrifying O.O
Zane Woods not to mention the smell from the u s steel plant
@@ralphjohnson3202 If you think the steel mills smell bad, you clearly never went past the refineries in East Chicago and Whiting.
Maaaaaaaaaan ain't nobody gonna become a resident of Gary. You buy a dollar house, move in, get constantly robbed, victimized, etc.
Fix it up and in five years it's yours. You can be sure it will never be 'fixed up' to the Cities satisfaction.Never fix up anything you don't own.
that reporter was the best thing about this video
I was born and raised in Gary. My parents were Polish and we lived with other people of the same or different nationalities. Things were Great there growing up! I lived in Glen Park...And graduated from Lew Wallace high school. My Freshman yr. 1966 was the very first yr. that we started busing in kids from downtown. Black kids. That didnt really bother me. I made a few new friends, but then slowly but surely my friends I grew up with started moving! It was happening fast too! I lost track of a lot of people that I really cared about! Now rememeber , Im still talking about early in my youth. The hard part came when MY parents, stubborn as they were Refused to move! Also, My Grandfather who lived in Downtown Gary! I respected them for doing that but then when I got older and moved away I worried about there safety! so, let me rap this up..It breaks my heart to see Gary as it is today! I think they should tear all those buildings and housed and try to Start Again! sorry my story was so long....But I feel better now that I actually put that feeling in to Words!
Carolyn Bentley are they still there?
Lew wallace hornet class of 2014
sbecktacular yes
A prime example of "white flight" ^^^^
I also grew up in Gary. My dad worked at the Youngstown sheet and tube company. We lived in the Ivanhoe projects that were located in the tolleston area back in 1955-1965 we then moved to the Aetna subdivision where I went to William a Wirt high school best schools in the nation way back when an education was worth it. After graduation in 1970 I got to work for a year in the bilingual program but only lasted a year after which I moved to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and started my family.
SHE SHOULD HAVE SAID " 1 OR 2 HOUSES ON A BLOCK, AND THE REST OF THE STREET ABANDOS"
The houses might cost 1 dollar, but whoever plans to live in Gary, his life won't be worth a wooden nickel because of the high crime and disregard for law and order in that city.
And you thought this was just happening in Detroit
Let the free market work in Gary, and in 40 years Gary will be one of the most prosperous areas in Indiana. Gary is a good potential to become gentrified, and to remove the poverty.
The market is so free it packed up and fucking moved 🤦♀️
since the jacksons came from there they have the money to buy the town and re name it jackson Indiana! just a thought.
Buy, buy Gary. If I could; I would. But only residents are eligible. Certainly, Gary residents know the value of a dollar. Buy it all up; and fix it up - believe in yourself and all your fruition will come true.
Wow! So I guess you don't need a GED to be mayor there.
The female Mayor at that time was a longtime Gary resident and attorney-graduate of Harvard Law School. What are your academic credentials?
15k for rehab??? more like 50k to 100k. it would cost 15 for a clean demolition of each one.
Ok let me get this straight...Soooo the town is too cheap to fix up these houses so they rather sell poor people a dream that one day they will become a home owner???😟 huuuuuum....Sounds a little fishy to me....
one dollar with a 30 year mortgage.
monthly payments of $990.00.
I had to work on some cell sites there in 2001. The place looked like a war zone. The only place I worked where the directions sheets would say: "Take armed guard"
U had to be a resident of Gary and have at least $10,000 in your bank account to buy one of theses houses. Gary does not do this anymore so don't be fooled.
Little do ppl realize it's a lot of abandoned mini Mansions in Gary. The potential is great! If I had a nice bank account an a well established career I would definitely move back home NAW I DON'T THINK SO! I'm trying to see what Colorado has to offer
This is the true meaning never forget where you come from and obviously The Jackson's did
That god damned place ought to be completely bulldozed, rebuilt, and renamed
A good setting for walking dead haha
If they had $20K to fix the house, they wouldn't be living in Gary, IN. Common sense, anyone?
i agree, i think the restriction of Gary residents only should be lifted, the city desperately needs new blood
U couldn’t give those houses away
Reminds me of the forgotten villages in China. So SAD.
Wouldn't live ther if I was payed. Rather live on the street somewhere.
What's with the Indian flag behind the anchor
It's Indiana not India.
Ajay K Kennedy I was thinking the same thing! 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Gary, Indiana needs to vote in a pro business conservative mayor.
yeah I don't know about that man. no businesses will want to be in a town with a -3 population and even worse reputation. It makes more sense to start by housing people, all the people. conservatives historically love doing a "every man for himself" sort of thing which is very much not an option in Gary. in fact, that's kind of how the city's been running for the last few decades since the city government has no money to really do anything.
Then who pays the mayor?
I go to Gary, IN quite frequently because my grandmother and aunt live there. Sure alot of the scenery is pretty pathetic but it's really not as bad as people make it sound. The Harlem Globetrotters even came to play one of their games there recently (January 2013) I've never been robbed, shot at, or randomly bothered by a stranger in Gary as many times as I've been there. I mean really, what city in the U.S is or will be worse than Detroit, Michigan.
hmm well the answer to that: what city is worse than Detroit Michigan? answer: Gary Indiana is worse than Detroit. at least Detroit has a lot of people, local and globally redeveloping Detroit, unlike Gary which everyone has given up on.
tom brady Oh well I guess it does depend on what part of Gary you're referencing. I've just never seen any crime there or have been a victim of any. I go there just about every year and every other month. But I'm glad nothing bad happened to either of us in those cities.
Trenton new Jersey and philly are both approaching Gary/Detroit levels of shittyness.
+twinpeninsulas peninsulas Philadelphia isn't as bad as Detroit or Gary and I doubt it ever will be, simply because Philadelphia didn't rely so heavily upon one industry (in Detroit's case the automobile industry) to make up the majority of it's economy. Trenton is one of the worst in New Jersey, but the worst in New Jersey for sometime now has been Camden. If any city in New Jersey does look anywhere near as bad as Gary, Indiana it's got to be Camden.
You've never been robbed in Gary? Really? Play the lottery now you are a UNICORN.
With Gary's location, I cant believe why its not booming with business as its one of the biggest truck routes.
they should have formed a unigov consolidation with Lake County just like they have done in Indianapolis. Gary likely would be growing today if they had done that back in the 60s and they could have kept their status as a separate metro area from Chicago.
piss poor leadership at both the local and state level.
@@Imperial0666 true
@For Truth Gary is a gold mine for the right investor with a vision. The location is perfect.
I've seen 1950s footage of a Busy and Bustling Gary with so many smiling faces. This is now a living ghost town.
there's no jobs there so how will people start fixing shit up where there's no money...
With good rail and road links, Gary could serve as home for many working in Chicago. Tons of people already commute much farther distances than that every day across the country. Still, it would take real incentives to buy one of these houses that are going to take steep investments to make habitable.
use your brain Cesar.
Cesar Carbajal ... work in Chicago which is 20 minutes away
At 1:20 I scrapped the hell out of that place in the EARLY '80s!!! I remember it being around 6th and Monroe if my memory is right. That's how long it's been empty!!!!
Open this up to outside investors. Drop the residency requirement. It will draw speculators. Thousands of repaired homes, entire neighborhoods. Allow gated communities. 20 Minutes from Chicago. Very inexpensive. Lower Indiana taxes. Let the gentrification in.
What is the name of this building right across from Jefferson elementary school use to be
Philadelphia did something similar years ago, and I believe it was a success, but that city had some reasonably good neighborhoods and a lot more people with deep pockets. The video claimed it would cost $15,000 to 20,000 to rehab an abandoned house. That sounds like a tall order - given the shape of the ones we saw. I wish them luck but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Comparing Gary IN to Philadelphia, PA is like comparing a person looks-wise one person will ruin your life and the other just needs intervention. Philly is the one who needs intervention.
buy a few then fix n flip them sounds like a idea. But I was there few days ago from Ft.Wayne called to go up there for work to pick up some dead animals. Cop stop by me and said whatever you do, keep moving don;t stay in one place for long they will jack or strip your vehicle down with or with out you inside. Run lights or signs if you have to but be safe about it. Must of ran my plates and found out I was out of towner or fresh meat up there lol.
I’d like to move into a black neighborhood. Said no one ever in the history of Earth.
Oh boy! Can't wait to buy one of those.🤣😂
so people who dont have money their buy a house to fix it up ...do they know the cost in fixing up a house ...that seems like a go no where plan for the city
What else would you expect from a democrat regime.
Better than many places in Eastern Europe. If i have a job offer i would go there and stay why not.
This is so sad. This goes on everywhere maybee not so extreme like this.
Where is this
Detroit, Gary. Whats the common denominator I wonder.
+paul Smith white people who stole and cheated then put mindless puppets in charge so when the theft was apparent they can say look what happens when black people in charge... I lived in Gary for 19 years there were more white mayors than blacks and no matter how the black mayors asked for aid or suggested ways to improve the city the governor always said fuck gary and all those blacks in it.. so yea go fuck yourself.
an economy built on manufacturing that in turn was shipped overseas so the top guys could make more money?
Steel
The government doesn't break windows, burn houses down, bust street lights, strip the houses of everything including the kitchen sink. Repairs to roads, sidewalks, public places, tree trimming ect, comes from taxes being paid. If taxes aren't paid, these repairs can't be accomplished. The mayor or governor doesn't own these houses. Somebody owns these houses though. Banks, insurance companies, ppl in general.
exactly. Gary was a "company" town. USS, and the "company" left it hi and dri
As of 11/2021, there is still apparently a waiting list.
No entiendo porque Gary está abandonado
Helping to help yourself.... A nudge to a stride of betterment
why would you live in Gary your whole life
East st Louis, Flint, Gary, Camden same Shit different tollet
2:50. Where else can you get a house for a dollar? Phoenix Arizona in the 70's. They tried the same thing with all of the HUD slums. It failed.
There seems to be a common element in these run down, crime ridden areas. Can’t quite put my finger on it
Democrat run.
What are the mayor and governor doing?
It's not getting a house for a dollar, they said about $25k to do up and that is a pre-requisite....so it is getting a house for $25,001.00tely....I cannot believe how :
1. So bad at math.
2. Such liars OR
3. So stupid?
I have a property available for purchase in Gary in a nice spot . Huge lot
Cincinnati Ohio had a lottery. You could get a house for $1 same stipulations applied. I was moving in and out of there at the time. I wouldn't live there now if you paid me
HOw to buy one of these houses? Write me please.
Detroit's $1 houses are more fair. Anyone can buy them. The only thing stopping me is my lack of vacation days from work and my hate of staying in hotels. I would have to go look at what I'm buying. Here, someone has to live in Gary, IN. The Detroit ones are $1 for anyone who wants it, and there, we could rent them out instead of living there 5 years.
Yeah, the resident only thing is very strange. So if i wanted to move to Gary and fix up my own house, I would have to find a residency in the town and be there for 6 months *before* I could even do the one dollar thing.
People here in California love to call Compton a ghetto and say how bad it is. But Compton is nothing compared to this place! Compton is rebounding and is on a come up. Compton has a bright future ahead of it. A future in Gary looks bleak at the moment. Hopefully this city can rebound to what it once was.
I'll be honest Compton looks like an average working class suburb of any midwestern city.
Jackson Roberts There's multiple reasons to that:
1)The weather. L.A. is warm all year round. No harsh weather. Winters filled with blizzards and melting hot summer heat can take its toll on a house. It's easier to preserve homes over here in L.A. because the weather isn't too harsh.
2)No arsons out here. People don't just go around burning houses down like they did with the South Bronx and like they do with Detroit.
3)Compton was meant to be a lily white suburb. White people didn't start moving out until the late 50s when racial restriction laws were removed and black people moved in. Prior to the 50s Compton was as stereotypical a suburb as you could get.
Just know those looks can be deceiving. But still, Compton is nothing compared to Gary. Compton actually has a higher rate of violent crime and has had that for many years but Gary is still worse off with its high rates of both violence and property crimes, and the fact that people are getting the hell out of there! People are moving straight outta Gary! Hopefully that doesn't continue.
***** There's plenty of places in the states where you can live decently off a modest income. But Cali, definitely not one of them! ESPECIALLY L.A.! I mean, $200,000+ for a run down shitty little shack house in Watts? Rip off. I love my city, but Los Angeles' houses are a rip off, whether in poor places OR rich places.
RIGHT!!! And that would be the last place I live, Watts.
Compton is nowhere near as bad off as Gary. the skid row area in Los Angeles is worse than Gary. those people are living in medieval slum conditions.
$1, lol, people still don't want to live there.
I was born in Gary, Indiana,
What we all need is The Father through Christ in The Holy Spirit. Go to the Downtown Center on June 2&3th it is what is going to get you to have something to have a change, hopefully in Christ for the Glory to Father God in All.
Now somebody is finally doing some real talk. Amen keep praying for Gary and other cities like it. Lord raise up the desolate places.
Its such a famous city
I'm jumping on a bus wright now,be ready I'll change it around. My name is
At least it is not as bad as some villages in China that do not even have roads going to them or any modern amenities. Now that makes for interesting videos.
a lot of opportunity in Gary for the right investor.
WOW!!!! $1...... just for a house??? Who in their right mind would pass that up🤓🤓🤓🤓
they're trying to fix a problem without addressing the root cause. fix the local economy and the housing problem will solve itself.
Gary is hopeless. No jobs, lots of poverty. Those $1 house are not $1. People who buy those quickly learn that they owe back due property taxes and unpaid utility bills in the tens of thousands on top of that you need to spend minimum $40,000 plus to make it livable because those houses have been stripped and have serious issues. Some of those properties have stayed vacant for 20+ years and need to be torn down. But the cost to tear it down and rebuild a new house or even rehab a property does not make financial sense. Even after putting all that money in it won’t be worth anywhere close to your investment because the area is so bad. The only way to make it work is if they forgive all the tax and utility leins and give lots of tax credits to investors. You need to seriously gentrify the area or parts of it.
Did Michel Jackson help Gary?
Evidently not. LOL!
Could have brought the whole town and been the mayor.
Why he should help, for what we paying taxes
$1 Japan: yes
$1 Italy: yes
$1 Greece: yes
$1 Gary Indiana: I'll pass
Damn gary looks bad i left in 1998 they so need to fix that city up
This was a steel mill town. Steel mill gone, so is the town. No point to resuscitate a ghost.
They should make air bnb out of those homes.
I buy now
That is a good idea-- although I wouldn't want to move there.
This is a disgrace, they could at least sell them for fifty or one hundred, will cost more to repair or fix,but to each their own,God knows what they need not me,be blessed!!!!?
Red lights have to be treated like stop signs in Gary
the red lights that are still working.
Everyone knows about gary Indiana
I love gary
just curious why? Only reason I go there a lot is because I have relatives there.
Fuck gary
I love Gary too. I was born and raised in the Chi but had many relatives in Gary and would have the BEST time every time we visit. I lived in Glen Park East in the late 90's and even then, I enjoyed every second of it. Garyites are some of the BEST people.
Straighten the economy there, bring some kind of tourism and responsible people will but them all.
I have more than a dollar
That's a plan
Perfect place for a slumlord to make big bucks 20k for house and code work charge 550 a month rent it's paid for in 3 years and start turning profit buy 4 or 5 and there you go
U know when american people talk about those chinese ghost towns? Now a chinese guy talks about american ghost towns, I bet he feels good now
Yep, Gary is a dump. My uncle lived there until his death n had a great life due to the steel mills. It used to be a nice city. Mike Pence our ex vice prez used to be gov. However, the city has railways n u would think this would lure more jobs but politicians seem to want this city to rot.
Republican controlled state government had a big hand in this. However, I think Hatcher was overly consumed with keeping what he saw as power, and alienated anyone who could really help. Of course, racism played a role as well. White people living there did not want to mix with blacks. I grew up there. I know.
I will wait for $1.00
LOL, MUST BE A RESIDENT OF GARY IS A REQUIREMENT TO OWN A HOME IN GARY? JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS.....
2:51 Detroit, Flint, Camden...
Looking at that dump its 99 cents too much
1 buck? RIP off.
I Em a 14 year old white male I have lived in Garry my whole life let me tell you it's not the best but then again it's most definitely not the worst
gotta dollar?
Lmao yep
Can I borrow a dollar? All I have is 50 cents.
I hope when u finish school ur able to either join the military or go to a college some where else and get out of there. Do well for yourself and when ur parents retire, move them where u live and take care of them. Lots of better places than there I can promise u that. Military will even pay for ur college and pay u extra when u get out of the military. The military will pay for ur college while ur still in the military too.
JMMT7022801
Don’t you mean ‘fiddy cent’. ?😂
Pick up all the homeless in california and put them in gary !
Now you have to live there to get a house. These people are trying to leave. You don't know what your getting into. The house might not be worth it. You can go to Missouri and get a house for a dollar. Or Detroit. The economy was so bad jobs sent away. It's not good investment. Can't leave your job just for a house. You don't know you can fix. And you don't own it for five years. No don't think so.
Jackson 5 forever
I live in Gary Indiana for 29 years... I know all of those houses they showed.... my friend stayed in the white one they showed
Antt Willa why do you stay?
во всём мире живут хорошо только богатые.
But They Got The Best BBQ ON 11TH & BROADWAY...PHANONOMIAL. RIBS!!!!
And I bet people with drug connections will turn them all into chop houses. It’s the best way to make money and actually safer to build good will with the shit around you when you can’t escape it. Who else could make any quality life there? Bulldoze it all and reset.
