      Yeah I just watched that one. A lot of scathing comments but I wasn't convinced. Just sounded like some sort of politicized revisionism. Just because there was a lot of infighting on both sides, and some ambition and selfish greed among the aristocracy and kings, doesn't mean it wasn't a reconquest. It was just a decentralized and quarrelsome affair, like most medieval warfare. All the social studies is infected by the ideological wars, I suspect.

    For the visuals i like to see good detailed maps. I also think most of people would like a visual comparison of each army to help people understand how outnumbered the crusaders really where.

    Yes it was a reconquest. As RCH pointed out in the video the Visigothic element didn't matter as much as retaking the land for Christendom did. And the Spanish royals had at least mild Visigothic blood. Spain was seen as integral to the Christian world, with Saint James of Zebedee believed to have been buried in Santiago de Compostela.

    • @michaelsteveharristonquisp6466
      @michaelsteveharristonquisp6466 Рік тому +4

      Mild is right
      If you check out family tree of the first kings , they technically had mostly Cantabrian (Celtic),or pre-roman blood,
      Pelayo was a Visigoth but everyone that came after was for the most part Celtic or Basque.
      Even if they had Visigothic blood , i think ethnic background was starting to take a backseat to religion and "nationality/culture?" .
      They saw themselves as Hispanii and more importantly Christian

    It was a reconquista and it was the Visigoths, they were pushed back and held a small impassible northern part of territory, it’s like saying we get invaded by foreign army and get pushed towards Alaska, that doesn’t change that your still American, or does it ?

    • @SPTX.
      @SPTX. 4 роки тому +11

      My thoughts exactly. It's like getting pushed out of your home then being told you can't "retrieve" it because since you're no longer there it means it was never yours. Absolute sophism.

      Irish Jester they where Germanic tribes or should I say Eastern Europe , it’s like North American Indians they came from Asia through the Bering straits and made a hone in North America , difference is the the goths occupied all of Iberian peninsula.

    If it wasn't a reconquest than neither was Saladin's invasion of the Crusader States, considering he was a Sunni and the Crusaders conquered it from the Shi'ite Fatimids.

    It is a reconquest, King Pelagio of Asturias was a Visigothic noble, and the Visigothic Kingdom was a Elective Monarchy, and with his sucess in the battle of Covadonga he just elected himself king, there was no more Visigothic Nobles that could be elected.

    • @sehnsuchtherz
      @sehnsuchtherz 4 роки тому +5

      We don't know if he was related in any way to any visigothic family AT ALL
      Nor was he ever called king
      It was the third ruler of Asturias, if I remember correctly, the first one to do it

    • @RealCrusadesHistory
      @RealCrusadesHistory  4 роки тому +22

      There's a high probability that he was Visigothic. The Chronicle of Alfonso III says he was the swordbearer of the Visigothic kings. This could just basically indicate he was noble. But at any rate, the Visigothic element wasn't essential from the Christian perspective. What really counted for medieval Christians in terms of "reconquest" was that they were recapturing the territory for Christianity.

    • @TheJoelC17
      @TheJoelC17 4 роки тому +8

      @@sehnsuchtherz It was elective in the sense that any Visigothic noble could be elected king, not only the family of the current king. They just had to be of noble families to apply to eligibility. And yes we know he was a Gothic Noble. The Codex Vigilanus is an illuminated compilation of various historical documents accounting for a period extending from antiquity to the 10th century in Hispania. And in there it says that Pelagio was a Visigoth nobleman, the son of Fafila. Fafila was a dux of Gallaecia, who was killed by Wittiza. The Chronicle of Alfonso III identifies Pelagius as a grandson of Chindasuinth and says that his father was blinded in Córdoba, at the instigation of Wittiza.

    In fact, there were 3 invasions of muslims to Iberian Peninsula - the first in 8th century, and then Almoravid and Almohad sects, principially Moroccan rulers. The fourth planned, that of Marinids, never realised.

    I think it was a reconquest because count pelagius (the first king of asturias) was the visigoth ruler of cantabria before the fall of the visigoth kingdom. The thing was that the visigoth culture evolved into the spanish culture mixing with the moorish culture from the invaders and the latin from the romans

    For visuals, helps to have a sort of dual map, strategic map and then tactical map of battle. Should show terrain well and numbers of units where possible. If the sources aren't so reliable don't give exact numbers as this will create a false sense of knowing what it really was.

    • @solonsolon9496
      @solonsolon9496 4 роки тому +1

      @Alexander Knight Well just scale mainly. Strategic map is at a higher level, could show all of Spain maybe other regions in North Africa France etc if they have some relevance to the strategic situation in the run up to a battle.

    I studied this subject years ago and am relying on memory. Do the Terms of Almohades and Almorivcultured of the two the "pillow people", A;morivides were the Hard people. who were. more primitive Islam in their culture. Along about this time there were in the region of Cordoba various scholars. principals of these were Averroes (Ibn Rushd), and Maimonidese, (Moses Ibn Maimon). Probably this time and. these scholars were most responsible for opening The Renaissance, and the response to it, the Reformation. I am reasonably certain the Visigoths were guilty of The Arian heresy which most notably recognized among other assertions a hierarchy within the Trinity. I would appreciate your response to these vague remembrances of history and. philosophy classes taken at USF (San Francisco) so many years ago.Professors were my personal friend, Dr. Michael Mathes, and Father R. I. Burns, S.J., there were others of course, but these two were the most memorable. I would appreciate your comments on my ancient memories.

    Infante don Pedro of Castile: "he would not be son of king don Sancho if in short time, having God given him life, he did nothing to return the House of Granada to the Crown of Spain, and that the nobles of Castile tilled and bred there".
    He died shortly after that in the vega of Granada.

      Of course. But the term "Spain" is generally used by English speaking historians when discussing this period of history. I'm using "Spain" to refer to a region, not a political entity.

    • @bradvandyke3301

      S
      "Spain" is the English way to say "Espana" the Castilian Spanish term for Roman "Hispania." It was a known region, even used in biblical times.
