Ooooo I love this topic. I feel like it comes up a lot in long running games too

I’m still learning and this opened my eyes to something I’d not considered. I must admit after a week of thinking I have so many more thoughts.

I feel the 'Aging DM' could have benefitted from a session zero and a set of questions and boundaries.
Aging in D&D is a rare thing to see and its not something that crosses many player's minds when they agree to rp, they can be quite okay with damage and potential death etc but changing the concept of your char can (and does) suck, similarly to why things like alignment change or stuff like that arent specially fun; we had a player who also nearly drops / gets rid of his character because he rolled poorly on an aging roll on his young cheerful dragonborn who then found himself becoming elderly in age. The DM was thankfully quick in providing a hook for a cleric that could get rid of the issue...
But yeah gotta be careful choosing monsters that can alter a character in was that may be worse than being reduced to 0hp or even killed.

I’ve never considered horrifying visage for session zero until now, food for thought.

Very true I’d never considered specific spells and rules could cause upset before this. It’s why it’s important to talk to each other. I wouldn’t change a characters stats but maybe it’s because I can’t visualise very well I never considered the aesthetics of a character changing. I had a character horribly scarred in a game by the gm without any rolls and I was fine with it. I now realise others may feel very different.
