That shadow explanation is so vague holy shit. Just explain it like this:
Imagine it's raining. The rain represents light. Now put a table on the ground. The rain will hit the ground everywhere except underneath the table. That spot where the table blocks the rain from hitting the ground is like a shadow.

Censtudios You're right. That is what I associate a cloud with (something fluffy) but it might not be the best way to explain it to a person born blind. But I thought of a new way. You know how, when some people vape, they blow a huge cloud of vapor? For a couple of seconds you can even put your hand through it and actually feel the vapors on your skin. Well, that would be a way to give a blind person tactile feedback on a cloud.

-A shadow is like when you're in the shower, and you block some of the water. The spot where the water isn't hitting (because you blocked it) is like a shadow.
-A rainbow is like when you're in a large room, and you can hear a faint hum, but the resonant properties of the room make that hum into a perfect chord, or a pleasing set of harmonics.
-Fog is just water in the air. It's humidity that's been cooled. It's what clouds are made of.. And that's why clouds make rain too... Fog is just a low hanging cloud.
-Heat shimmer is like how things sound different underwater. Sounds travel through different materials of different densities at different speeds. Light sort-of does this too. Because the ground is hot, it heats the air, which rises and gets replaced by cool air. Hot air is less dense than cool air, and because of that, the light travelling through it gets bent and we can see a rippling effect.
-Clouds are just water... in the air... They're fog that's high up in the sky. They look fluffy like cotton, but they're just water.... in the air...
-A sunrise is what happens when earth rotates enough for you to be out of it's shadow. Night is when you're in the earth's shadow, day is when you aren't. (stacking definitions... but hey... it works...)
-That girl's definition of space is absolutely perfect...

yoyofargo I like this comment. Nothing more to add. These descriptions make sense to me.

    • @laurab7754
      @laurab7754 9 років тому +7

yoyofargo Really good descriptions, I couldn't think of one for a shadow and that makes a lot of sense. I'd like to add a little something though to maybe make it more clear and I'm going to share my own descriptions.
      - building upon your description, where the floor becomes wet is like light. Something is hitting that spot and changing how it looks (aka making it bright or in in this case wet). But that spot where the water isn't hitting the floor is like a shadow because it's dry since your body is blocking the path of the water nothing is hitting it (and it would be darker if the water was light).
      - the way I think of to describe a rainbow is like this. It's a rainy day, its cold, wet, and humid. After the rain stops it still doesn't feel great, the cold and wet feelings linger until the sun can dry everything out. But before the sun can shine and everything begins to feel warm and dry, a rainbow appears and, while it doesn't warm like the sun does, its an arch in the sky that mentally gives you the feeling of warmth and peace that a sunny day brings.
      - It's hard to describe fog since it is so visual, but besides the feeling of cold and humidity you feel when it is foggy, it also obscures seeing people's vision. Imagine being in a room. Immediately around you is your couch, coffee table, etc. But the farther away from the couch you get, the less there is around you but the room stretches on forever. What is immediately next to you is visible, you know it's there, but farther away you just can't tell what's there. Many artists (canvas, game, or otherwise) actually use fog as a representation of being blind to depict the experience to seeing people.
      - I can imagine heat shimmers as an upside-down waterfall. You know the feeling of running water? imagine that it went the opposite way, up instead of down. When it's really hot outside and a surface such as the road becomes unbearably hot, colorless waves rise up from the ground. While heat is not wet, i think it can be accurately compared.
      - Clouds are difficult as well. Do you have a favorite pillow? Or have you ever held poly-fill? That's what a cloud looks like. It looks like it would be soft and comfy, but clouds are actually just frozen water particles in the sky. When it gets stormy though the clouds block out the sun, which is why it's often cold and humid before a storm. The clouds also make it rain, since the water particles that make the cloud get too heavy and fall down to earth.
      - yoyo's definition is scientifically pretty accurate, but I also feel a sunrise is more emotional than the difference between light and shadow. Most people love watching the sun rise or set. The sky becomes so many different colors it's beautiful and inspiring. Listening to a really peaceful but beautiful song for the first time, relaxing with someone you love and haven't been with in a while, stoking something soft and comforting, the feeling of wonder, happiness, and tranquility I feel perfectly describes the feeling of seeing a sun rise.
      - I agree, that girl's definition of space was great. Just a wide expanse of space above you, filled with minuscule balls of light hanging in mid air which are so far away from your grasp, and in reality are thousands, billions, and trillions times our own earth's size.

    • @noamtashma2859

      great explanations
most of the video explanations turn to the emotional side of how it feels to see the thing, but not really get what the thing is. the sunrise explanation is really like he is explaining what is beauty, not sunrise.
but you did it logically. Good job.

The feeling he described is the appreciation of the current monent, appreciation of now, becoming one with the wind that touches your skin. Alan Watts called it Furyuu I think. Like when you're fishing and forget about the fish because you feel tranquility running through your entire body. Or a feeling you might get after a particularly good meditaion session. It's kinda funny how sunrises just don't work on a picture or video, but give such a profound feeling when experienced live. It makes me think that there is a soul to this world. The eternal oneness or something.

Jess Kalford I personally would describe colour more like a scale of musical notes. Certain colours look good together just like certain notes sound good as chords. You can get different shades of colour like how the same note sounds different on different instruments. I believe Tommy said once that he didn't get how the sky was blue and something completely different (I can't remember the exact thing) like a blueberry was blue, but a bird can sing a note just like if you hit something metal it'll sound the same note.

I think the best way to describe things that can only be seen to a blind person is to translate them into other senses:
A shadow looks the way a footprint feels. It's the same material as the surrounding, but there's an imprinted outline. And slightly cooler.
Fog looks the way a voice sounds when someone is talking through a closed door. Everything is just muffled slightly, and the thicker the door, the more muffled the voices.
Clouds are just fog so far away that you can't accurately judge the scale. (Just like how you can tell the difference between a voice right next to you and a voice from across the room, but it's a lot harder to judge the difference between a sound coming from a hundred feet away and a sound coming from two hundred feet away.) So clouds look smaller and therefore denser then fog. The best way I can describe the way a cloud looks from the ground is to imagine the texture of blobs of shaving foam floating on the surface of water.
Heat shimmers look like the way a Dalek's voice sounds. It's almost normal, except everything is vibrating.
Space is probably infinite, and since our minds can't really conceive the infinite, it looks flat to us. Imagine a domed ceiling covered with very tiny crystals -- a few somewhat larger ones, but most of them so small they're barely noticeable. And while it's true that everything in space is moving, their relative positions change so slowly that it looks like they're stationary.
Lighting. If sight were sound, imagine a completely silent room, and then out of nowhere, somebody clapped his hands once very loudly. If you happen to be looking directly at where the lightning hits (which is rare, because you don't have any advanced warning where to look), it would have the shape and feel of a very long crooked stick made of very hot glass, which disappeared about a quarter of a second.
The sun looks kind of like the way a hot light bulb. You can tell it's round, but you can't really feel the edges, because as soon as you feel the heat, you instinctively pull your hand away. Likewise, you can sort of see that the sun is round, but you can't really look at the perimeter, because it's so bright, you instinctively move your eyes away from it. As for a sunrise, specifically, the atmosphere filters out some of the brightness, so it's easier to look at. Think of a light bulb that was just turned on, and it's warm, but not too hot yet. And, of course, it's very slowly rising into the sky.
Now for the difficult one. Rainbows look like something that's there, but not there, fluid, yet stationary, and change positions depending on which way you're looking at them. The edges are a blur, and if colors were musical notes, then the color or a rainbow would be like a slide whistle, just running through all of them in a smooth succession. The best way I can describe the apparent shape of a rainbow would be a giant, semicircular... ripple? Yeah, let's go with a ripple.

  • @mariouribe4083
    @mariouribe4083 8 років тому +57

I love how he was genuinely mind blown by the young Asian girls explanation of space. Everyone else was making things way more complicated then necessary. rainbows and sunrises don't make me feel like I'm with loved ones it's just pretty to look at it, his dominant sense is sound so compare it to something pretty to listen to. a rainbow is like a chord of pleasant notes being played at once in a steady rise and fall in volume. If a shadow is the outline of an object blocking a source of light, then while I'm talking and someone large walks in between me and him then my voice will momentarily be muffled, the person has casted an audio shadow.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion 8 років тому +8

A lot of people are talking way to abstract, when they need to be precise.
In a way this is like a translation of languages, where senses are there own different language.
If I had to tell you what the Danish word "sulten" means and I talked about it abstractly e.g. "you feel like you are empty inside", it is not certain that you fully grasp it, but if I could be precise enough and tell you it means "hungry" you would understand completely.
Now I know that it is not as easy as translating a word, but my point is that we should try to make as precise and simple translation as possible, instead of abstract explanations trying to describe the sensation rather than translating it.

Little by litte, different notes are added, forming a more and more complex melody. Violins start playing along, then trumpes, and suddenly, a whole orchestra is playing a beautiful score that makes you happy and sad at the same time.

I think the people in this video did an unsatisfactory job of relating sight to something you can understand. I don't think anyone can truly convey the experience of sight through words, but I do believe I can draw a strong analogy of sight to hearing that might help you understand it better.
I would say that colors are analogous to different pitches of sound. pitch is determined by the frequency of vibration in the air, color is determined by the frequency of light. Certain colors invoke certain moods in people depending on culture and context. A minor chord can feel dreary, like the greyish blue of a rainy day. A rainbow can be compared to a musical scale, with the colors arranged in a pleasant and orderly manner.
Brightness is like volume. If an sound is distant, quiet, or muffled, it can be difficult to make out what it is. The same goes for vision. If in object is obstructed, far away, or dimly lit, it is hard to see it in detail. Too much brightness can be blinding, just like how a very loud sound can be deafening.
A highly saturated image is one that is made up of only one wavelength of light. This is analogous to a single pitch of sound. An unsaturated image is made up of all kinds of light, which drown each other out and become grayscale. This is analogous to hearing white noise, or pressing all the keys on a piano at once.
Distortion, such as the heat waves mentioned in this video, would be comparable to a warbling or modulated sound, fluctuating in perceived location or pitch.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion 8 років тому +2

      Good analogy.
I also think the best way to describe something to a person missing a sense, is to focus on another sense and find an analogy through that. You did it with sound, I have seen other good examples with taste and the girl talking about space in a way used feel (awareness of the room and its boundaries ).
The analogies fail when people are talking to abstract or vague. Your example was good because it gave a concrete and precise translation of the light to sound.

It great to look at something so ordinary to us, discribed in such a beautiful way. Like, with the feelings and all of that. I mean, when you see everything, it doesn't always create a feeling or emotion. Because it is so ordinary to us. It gives a different point of view on the world. Looking into the world not by seeing it, but by feeling it.

In my experience, most people are way better at describing things then they give themselves credit for.
Think about it like this. When you're looking at something like a sunset, rainbow, or something like that, you're taking in literally thousands of images per second. I know, science again ;-) I'm an engineer, shoot me. Anyway, you're taking in all this information. And when you stop and think about it, speech is a very slow way to communicate it.
Most people are way better at describing things than they ever give themselves credit for. Even though I'm personally an atheist who loves science, A major part of the description for me it's just the vibe the person gives off. If it's something they're enjoying looking at.
Honestly, I really like all these descriptions. This is a great channel; I love the vids.

here are my explanations (sorry it's long, but I feel It's pretty accurate and would lose that if it was shorter)
    - "A shadow is like when you're in the shower, and you block some of the water. The spot where the water isn't hitting (because you blocked it) is like a shadow." (+YoYoFargo) building upon his description, where the floor becomes wet is like light.
    - Scientifically, it's the transition from night to day, but I also feel a sunrise is more emotional than the difference between light and shadow.

Best way i can describe a rainbow.
A six string guitar. Each string plays a different pitch arranged low to high. All lined up in a row, parallel to each other.
As you pluck the first string from the top (the biggest) that is red. A low pitch that is similar to red in intensity.
As you strum down you get orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Holding a guitar and placing your hand over all six strings, knowing that you are feeling an organized collection of six different sounds that your ears can hear.
A rainbow is similar in that it is a collection of organized colors that our eyes can see.

Space - Imagine running into an empty, cold room. Silent as death. Suddenly, the floor beneath you disappears. You're floating. Down is up. Left is right. There is no direction anymore. There is only vast emptiness and cold. You feel very alone, and somehow very connected at the same time. You realize how small you are, how finite your life is. In the distance, so far off you couldn't reach them in a thousand lifetimes, there are pockets of warmth. Huge planets multitudes bigger than the one beneath your feat swirl around stars. There are millions in every direction. They don't care about you, they don't even note your existence. They are majestic, powerful, and ageless. That is space.

its surprising how people fail so hard at describing things,
A: a shadow is the 2d anti-projection of a 3d object, it is the same shape as the shadowing object but it can be skewed
B: a rainbow is a curved band or light, it is multicolored so within that band you can distinguish other bands running along it, but the colors gradient into each other so smoothly and with such high resolution that its impossible to quantize it into saying how many colors are in it. and BTW Joe Hanson is wrong, many colors are not in the rainbow, Pink isnt in the rainbow for instance.
C: fog is a semi-transparent blob floating in the air that can give a great sense of depth as things are further away due to the fog obscuring the image more, and at other times it can be so thick that it obscures the world around you and makes you feel like your in a new place.
D: visualizing heat waves would be like if you painted an image on your skin, and then start poking that image, the view stretches and contracts very randomly in small regions. IRL the heat waves make things at a distance jump around as the light is bent through the air before it hits your eye or camera.
E: clouds are massive and very impressive blotches that are far out of reach, they are forever changing and they can have a very deep sense of depth to them. but then you remember that the clouds your looking at are even more massive than they seem, being miles wide.
ah fuck it, nobody's gonna read this anyway.

The problem with your description is that you just described how it looks. Tommy can’t see how it looks. He hasn’t no concept of colors, so rainbows and sunrises would be particularly hard to describe. The people had to use the other senses to describe the intangibles. There’s no way Tommy could get a feeling of a rainbow from someone saying it’s a band of light with colors in it. He’d have no idea what that means. I think their descriptions, for the most part, were very well done. They didn’t have any time to prepare or think about it, they just said the first thing that came into their mind when they think of that object.

A rainbow to a blind person would be like getting all of their favorite textures together then setting them in a row and getting to experience them all seamlessly instead of independently. That coupled with an awe and joy of being able to experience it.
A sunrise/sunset to a blind person would be sort of similar in nature. Except the textures are never quite exactly the same arrangement or amount, so you experience the textures you love but it will feel slightly different (but just as amazing) every time. Those experiences also coupled with a sense of peace.
Fog to a blind person would be if you had to feel something through a cloth or sheet. And the thicker the sheet, the harder it is to identify what it is you are holding.

3:30 I think he was describing an orgasm rather than a sunrise.
