Guys the clue is that Ford may be licensing teslas FSD on a ford vehicle in the “skunks works” -time will tell. But this partnership would align with Tesla’s mission and make Tesla a shit tonne of money
It sounds to me like Jim Farley is talking about the equivalent of Tesla’ Autopilot, which has been able to handle highway driving for. . . How long now?
I have a feeling that BYD could be a very early licensee for Tesla Full Self Driving technology. They do not an in house FSD capability and would be the most likely to realize how important and valuable a license agreement with Telsa would be.
Farley has always impressed me as a fairly straight shooter but he could well just be trying to buy some time by making claims he knows they won't deliver on. In 2021 Mary Barra said GM should be able to overtake Tesla by 2025. Did she really believe that or was it just to get the wolves away from the door?
Full Disclosure I own quite a bit of TSLA, and think Elon is one of the greatest innovators in the last 100 years. But also one of my EVs is a Ford Lightning and I absolutely love using the Blue Cruise. I thought the clip of Jim Farley you played was a very fair assessment by him. He said they have a lot of work to do on EVs, he concedes that. He also mentioned they are making a lot of money selling their PRO line of trucks, plus the F150, Bronco, ICE etc. Remember one thing, Tesla promised an EV truck in 2019, yet Ford beat them to market with the Lightning, by a couple of years. And Tesla had a head start. Tesla can do great. Ford can do well. Both things can be true.
What makes us think Ford isn't partnering with Nvidia on this? Seems more likely to me that Ford would be fooled into thinking they can solve it on their own through Nvidia.
I'm just a few minutes in, but I can already comment on someone saying "we will have cars where the driver can take their hands and eyes off" - key is UNDER WHICH CONDITIONS. We've seen how easy it is to do what, eg, Mercedes did. But that system is so restricted, it's almost laughable. So someone claiming autonomy for their brand, you HAVE to qualify that.

I understand why Gary Black is forecasting as he is. History is on his side. Pretty well any feature offered by any automaker became available to all makers fairly quickly. If you believe the this is a universal truth then you will think as Gary does. If someone steps up and says this time is different, it is viewed with skepticism. The same thinking applies to AGI. AGI is not just a better computer/robot. This is why Elon is so concerned about its development/deployment. AGI has the potential to change the world as we know it to a very different place. .
Will we see Optimus bots driving vehicles? Will the Optimus eliminate delivery driver as a career? And will Tesla build vehicles specific to Optimus to allow charging and any cloud required service? As a Optimus could drive delivery trucks scan and deliver packages and drive to the next home or mail box.
Unless Ford is trying to implement Tesla FSD, I expect Ford to give an update in a year.... saying that they are still only two years away. Sort of like how fusion power has been a decade away for the last 50 years...
The claim Ford is expected to be the first mass market auto company to provide Level 3 autonomy is an odd statement. So, Jim Farley does not consider Tesla to be a mass market brand?
If the big car companies can't even get a decent EV happening while making a profit they sure as hell can't do FSD, which is 100X harder. They are simply not software companies. Tesla WILL have the system they will HAVE to license. Because if they don't they will be further left behind. And that won't end well.
If I were the CEO of Uber, I would definitely be selling my Uber shares to buy Tesla shares now while it’s low and pre-8/8. That’s because I’d be aware that one RoboTaxi goes live, $TSLA is going to go up way higher than $UBER! 😂
