It's clear now that one of the reasons you are successful is that you are looking at the long run. You aren't fixated on one big song, one big album; "makin it big". You are committed to being a musician. It really shows through...so sincere. Thanks for sharing your experiences Pete.
Nobody, but nobody is giving such priceless advice like you are Pete. The only thing someone might add to your advice would be to not get caught-up in drugs that can ruin it all.
A common trait I see throughout all these people is positive mental attitude. Don't be a whiner, stop blaming everyone for your problems and make it happen. True words of wisdom, Pete!!
Great vid Pete, This is not just good advice for musician's but for life in general! 11 years ago I made the decision to go into business full time (building effects pedals), heaps of people thought I was crazy but it was the best decision I ever made. Am I a millionaire, no, do I look forward to starting work every Monday, you bet :)
Pete, you are extremely positive and that's the real reason I come back to your videos. You're already great, but man, this video series is really proving that attitude goes a long way. All of these positive mentors and people that helped you reach your dreams have turned you into a super sincere, persuasive, and more importantly positive educator. Thanks!
It’s interesting hearing from this perspective. I’m an Engineer and Hip Hop Producer but actually gravitated to playing Bass and Guitar after I saw the guitar side of the music business . These were some of the reasons: 1) to be an engineer that plays an instrument (not all do) 2) Increase production value of beats/demos fairly easily 3) Produce for RnB as well and create samples for other Hip Hop Producers.
I live in Lloydminster (2 hrs East of Edmonton) and live music in all it’s forms is unbelievably rare these days. This episode really hit home for me knowing my location isn’t necessarily a complete road block for me. Thank Pete 😊
I had no idea you toured with Draco! He was (still is) huge when I was growing up in PR... “Más y Más” is one of my favs. As if I didn’t have enough respect and admiration for you, now I find this out. Thanks for everything Pete and sharing your knowledge. V/r AR
Pete, never watched much of your past stuff,, Wow, U said U don't have kids, not all folks wants or have time 4 kids, Pete U have been a real long time helper to more kids than I even know but weather U ever wanted kids or it was not something you like to talk about, I have raised 4 sons and my older 2 sons R stepsons, U R a great Father figure to all these young folks and us old kids!! I'm 54 so I'm little Old 4 a kid, but we R all kids in life n sharing these vids just make me more closer of thinking we can B good buddies n jam. Maybe some day if God Blessess me we might meet? If we don't, TY 4 helping the lost musicians find more doors to open! Maybe I'm years behind been 88 my hi Year in music, hearing my band on Radio as I was working 4 my Dad, I stopped said that's me on the radio lead G. Was such a taste my life took different direction as we were maybe get a gig playing as a unsigned Band 4 Bon Jovi n 88, But I'm slow learning to catch up and on health probs I am so glad to B a follower of your every thing I have learned so much but I am trying 2 start again and being health issues makes it tuff, I can't work so Free advice and seeing U accel makes me happy 4 U and happy 4 me finding your channel n sharing anything I can on your live chats and finding out things I'm so behind in ,if U don't get to read all my chats, I find help from others as we listen and learn and share,,,, God Bless U brother
Your advice is like golden nuggets.... Take every tiny piece you can get and save it. Soon you will have accumulated a wealth of hands on, professional music knowledge.!! Thanks again Pete
Unfortunately. After being a musician for 20 years. I still haven’t found someone to be a music mentor. But even that in itself was good because it forced me to become my own mentor. If you have even one person like that in your past you are very lucky. Actually now that I think about it. When I played violin as a kid. I had this teacher who forced my to SLOW DOWN my practicing. And work on being smooth and controlled. That in itself was pure gold advice. I stopped playing violin but that was still great advice for other stuff too.
Thanks Pete! I'm really glad you're doing this series, and thankful for your channel in general. As a fifty plus year old mediocre guitarist, I have no plans to make a living playing music, but you help keep me motivated to learn and play for fun with my friends. Cheers!
Just found this series of yours this past weekend Pete. Holy Cow! Amazingly WISE and practical advice. My son is heading to college next fall to be a professional guitar player. Your having a profound impact not just on me, Pete, but on the next generation. THANK YOU!!!
Man I wish I had these videos when I was coming up! I spent way too much time around negative people and I feel my career has suffered for it but because of videos like this and people like Pete, I have a new energy and working hard to make up for lost time. Thank you Pete!!
It was so cool to hear you talking about LA and then the mentors that you had. Including even here, right in Edmonton where I live. Very exciting to hear the name Terry McDade. His family is legendary. You are a great guy Pete, and I am impressed with how you speak about people and how you work.
First song I played was Walk, Don't Run by The Ventures with their groovy surf tones. Learned it from a 60s tab book...lol. My guitar teacher showed me the perfect 5th (2 string power chord) and I learned Looks That Kill by the Crüe. That was it
That was a great chunk of inspiration Pete, not just for young musicians, but for any young person starting out in any work environment. You could have been a life coach, I guess in many ways you kind of are. PS. drove through Leduc yesterday driving from Calgary to Edmonton.
Wow...great segment. Pete, you may be a Class A musician but you are every bit the entrepreneur too. I really connected with this segment, and I not even a musician! I am a small business owner and father. Been wondering lately about how happy I am at the end of each day and to hear you talk about your dad and to think about my son...gut punch man. Your work has officially grown beyond the world of music. Thanks and keep up the good work. 👍
It's great to hear about your experiences, insights and reflections in this series, "so you wanna be a pro musician." I'm looking forward to the next one!!!
Apart from jams and gigs at parties, I was never in a serious band. I was not good enough until I was over 40 (too busy working at sea to play lots and improve). My nephew just turned 23 and is getting quite good. He learns a lot from his dad who is a pretty decent gigging guitar player. I told him he is getting really good and is easily good enough to be in a band. He looked really surprised. Lots of guitarists think they are no good and do not get in bands. Confidence etc. The other thing is a lot of us focus way too much on learning flashy lead stuff and do not learn songs. I am really bad for that. Sometimes I can not even keep a beat without a click or drums etc. I am always jealous of people that can just strum simple songs on acoustic (I can play Eruption and the Mr Crowley solos [on a good day] but can't strum a simple tune on an acoustic. Doh). I think people that can do that and then learn the more advanced stuff are far more likely to do well in bands. p.s. Practice is important and pays off, but make sure not to let it feel like a tedious chore I think. Nothing worse than feeling unenthusiastic about picking up your guitar because practice has become such a drag. Playing guitar should be enjoyable. I try to have a quite varied practice list of things that are kind of fun to do. I will practice in short bursts, then play something and then go back to practice and so on. That way I can have some fun playing and put the practice to immediate use.
Hey Pete, finally had some time to sit at the PC and watch this latest episode.... My time wanting to do the pro muso thing has long past, I'm in my 50s now, but damn, the kids now starting out after woodshedding their craft will certainly be looking at you and a few others here on UA-cam for starters as mentors. This has been a good series. Well done!
That was very interesting. It’s always good to hear from someone who has such a great outlook on what he does. Sounds like you’ve come a long way, both in miles and career. I think your point about keeping yourself above the fray, regardless of what you do for a living, is very insightful. Surround yourself with good people, right? Sounds easy, but sometimes that’s all it takes to be successful (and stay out of trouble). A positive attitude can be infectious, so why not have? Along with speaking clearly, being organized, and when necessary knowing when to ask questions. Great points Mr. Thorn. Glad I tuned in. Keep up the great work!
I’ve said it previously.... thank you so much for these videos Pete! Amazing info. It’s really inspiring to hear you talk about surrounding yourself with positive people and influences and the willingness to learn. That Is so so important in life, music, business, etc. You’ve had some amazing positive inspirations and I’m grateful (as I’m sure a tonne of other people are) for the inspiration and positivity that you in turn pass along 🙏 thanks and have an amazing weekend.
You have such a great channel! Love your playing and really enjoy your insight. You are a great communicator and a lot of what you share has been so helpful. It clear you know what you’re talking about. Your channel is always inspiring! You have a great gift!!! Love the good attitude and down to earth advice. Thank you Pete! -Michelle
Hi Pete, you are a true authentic, giving soul. Thank you for gifting your great lessons and insights. I feel blessed to be able to hear this across the world (here in Australia) and feel like I've gained some insights on how to better conduct myself, while furthering my career and life. Great stuff. Big thanks. JLF
I’m loving this series Pete. Everything you’ve gone over pertains to life in general and your everyday kind of jobs too. Your first part, don’t be an a**hole was perfect and made me complete a little self inventory. Showing up in the second part, although I’ve never personally called in sick, guys who work for me do... all the time and wonder why they’re being replaced when I need someone more reliable. Mentors are a dying breed. Without the one I had as a teen, teaching me the trade I’m in, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I seriously owe every success I have had to him taking the time to share life lessons with me when I was a little s**t disturber. This series is just great man and has been a great opportunity for a little reflection. Thanks!
I have been lucky enough to develop a good friendship with Sonny Greenwich Jr., lead guitarist and co-founder of the great Canadian band Bootsauce. I am humbled by having this relationship with someone who has been there/done that. I can see how very important a mentor can be. Thanks for always providing such great information and advice. Cheers!
Great Video Pete!!! Thanks for the excellent videos, advice and music!! This series has been so helpful and inspiring in my efforts to work as a Professional Musician, Thank you!! No Coincidences!!
Man you always have such great words of wisdom. As you might be able to tell from my icon photo, I'm no spring chicken. I;ve been playing for over 45 years. I also am a business owner. Your words of advice ring true no matter what field of life you are pursuing. Great series of videos.
Perhaps you could do a video explaining what a "record deal" is. In most cases, it is a binding contract in which the record company owns your creative content (songs, recordings, etc.) in exchange for promotion, distribution, and a loan to record and tour. Most artists don't receive a penny of profit until this loan is repaid in full. There are plenty of horror stories about music careers destroyed by bad "record deals."
This videos are amazing! Thanks for this Pete! I always wanted to do something like this, i'm not famous as you, but i have very lucky on my gigs in Shanghai and i think all those topics you already talked before are those things that give me all my gigs. Amazing! Robi Draco Rosa is an amazing!!! Artist, the new record is killing it!
Great points, perspective, and disposition. I agree with posts in that those pointers can be very applicable and rewarding in other aspirations in life. Great stuff, refreshing, inspiring; and invaluable. Thanks for sharing
This is so fascinating and relatable! The story of being good to others, working hard, showing up, taking opportunities, seeking advice from credible and inspiration people. I can identify with this. I can’t identify with all the rock bios of “Learned guitar, started a band, did drugs, banged chicks, got signed, got money, did better drugs, better women, something something something...rehab” 🤔
Great content, love this series! How I wish UA-cam was a thing when I was learning and coming up. So much of what you’re sharing would have saved me years of learning from my mistakes. Bless ya Pete. You’re a great role model and mentor yourself. Thanks for all you do.

So insightful and respectful. Great advice for any career. So many great times checking out Brian Hughes in Toronto in the 90's!

Great advice!
Loving this series!! Thank you.
This series is so helpful.
Thank you 🤘😁
I love this series! Super helpful

I think I may still have the old guitar mag with a mention of your teacher Brian Hughes as a 'new talent' or similar.
awesome !!! thank you !!!
