I was still a relatively young A.E./C.E. at the beginning of the 22's Design/Engineering program and had been on Pershing II program (Martin Marietta) and then SDI when due to my Computer Engineering degree from Georgia Tech was asked to work on the 22's computer/networking/software design and was one of the Principal Software Engineers for the 22's Flight Dynamics Sensor Software Suite. I retired in 2019 holding a similar though more encompassing position on the 35 program. They are both pretty sporty when they have their fangs out! I will pass on one small tidbit from behind the 35's development curtain that walks up to the classified door but does not walk thru. The 22's software/networking is pretty straightforward but the 35's is much more complex and the software became so voluminous that we were struggling to find the computing cycles to isolate/troubleshoot anomalies (read: regression test) said software and this contributed, in a no small way, to the programs budget and timeline slips. Lockheed Martin bought two Quantum computers. The 35B/A/C passed Combat Readiness Review. That is all.
These Lockheed engineers at the time probably didn't know that, they had built the most advanced fighter jet, that would last for over 30 years and beyond. What an achievement.
We actually did know, more than anyone else (a recently retired A.E./S.E. who worked on the 22's Flight Dynamics Sensor Software Suite and later the 35's Flight Dynamics and Battlespace Management Sensor Software Suites.
I remember when they were testing the raptor they flew through the chattanooga area several times, one time after dark screaming by low windows rattled dogs barking awesome America baby 😆😆
Since it's introduction into the USAF we haven't fought adversaries with an AF of their own. Obvious answer. Raptors entered service 2005-2007. We were only fighting insurgents.

And today it's the most lethal fighter aircraft on the Planet.. way to go everyone!!!!

Is it true that the F-22 software can always be upgraded due to its architecture?

@@stevefowler2112 But for the F-22 to last for over 30 years and still reign supreme is a great achievement in itself.
We actually did know the 22 would put us a generation ahead of both Russia and China for at least 20 years.
The F-86 had its maiden flight in 1947, 25 years later the F-15 took off for the first time, and 25 years after that we got this.
i was born when the beast took flight for the first time.
Is that the jurassic park theme music?

Hmm. Wasn't the maiden flight at Edwards AFB, and in this video, final approach is over houses? Something doesn't add up here...
LOOKs like the takeoff is in a "trees" area... Edwards has no trees for mile and miles, all sand and rocks...... bet this at the factory.
First flight was in Marietta Georgia
So BADASS 😎🔥🛩️🔝🦅🇺🇸🗿
Sweet!
I don't remember that pole on the nose.
Could have been for telemetry
For testing
Pretty sure it's a holdover from the test model, the YF-22.
Oh cool!
Pitot tube, lets you measure airflow.
This is not first flight of f 22! I remember it had fallen down on its maiden flight!!!
That was the prototype YF - 22, not f22

If the F-22 is so superior why hasn’t it been used in combat?
