About Away Days Allies in the Art Sector

Deaf Explorer CIC, a non-profit organisation dedicated to removing barriers for under-represented artists are setting up an 'Away Day' with the theme "Allies in the Art Sector". We are currently organising an event with the aim to bring hearing and deaf artists together to improve collaborative work within theatres, visual arts and art industry curators.
Due to the cultural and language differences between deaf and hearing artists, there are significant barriers that prevent many deaf artists from working in creative industries. This leaves the deaf community under-represented and without access, and prevents mainstream art from experiencing the skill, perspectives, and contributions that deaf artists have to offer. Our event aims to use presentations, masterclasses and arts workshops led by well-known deaf and hearing artists and facilitators within the industry to identify the causes of this and share how industry allies could help to reduce these barriers.
