We grew up with YES and watched their evolution........they synthed seamlessly because they were such a progressive group of visionaries. Look for YES's "We Have Heaven" which was an impromptu piece that is absolutely too short.

In return, they have gained new fans who are more into shorter, danceable songs. The fact is that at the beginning of the 80s hardly anyone wanted to hear excessive, multi-part prog songs. Yes has taken this into account with this album. (and very successfully). And if you listen closely to the songs and arrangements, you can still clearly see the "Prog origins" of the songs.
This song and album wasn't originally intended to be Yes. Guitarist Rabin was trying to start a solo career and producer Trevor Horn wanted a 10-song demo. Rabin only had 9, so he rattled off 30-40 sec of the chorus line, hoping Horn wouldn't listen to it. Horn got hooked on it and helped him craft it into a full song in the studio with the help of two studio musicians, former drummer and bassist of Yes. Unfortunately, Rabin had a hard time with the vocals, so the bass player contact lead singer Anderson to come in and try it. It worked so well, Yes was reassembled around Rabin just because of this tune, the entire album also required some reworking and Anderson had to overdub his vocals over all of Rabin's previous vocals.
In other words, in the end they were sellouts. Artistic value gone, replaced only wanting the money that comes from being popular in the world of trendy.

Incredible synth sounds and tight, tight, production values. Throw the other worldly talents of Trevor Rabin into the mix on guitar and vocals and it was always destined to be HUGE.

The horn blasts, the drum treatments, Jon's vocal range, and that incredible guitar solo -- it all caught my young imagination. Then I ended up falling in love with their much more progressive back catalog. Some people are fans of one or the other era, but I enjoy it all.

That song is a very good representation of the music compositional flow used in old school music, specifically the 80'. There are no loops on it at all. You have a meaningful lyric, excellent synth programing, sampling and performance on the keys, excellent drum sound, immaculate bass, very innovative guitar processing and the most important, NO AUTOTUNE AT ALL! You have real singer performing in the way a real artist with real talent is supposed to cut his tracks.
Watching this song give you multiple jump scares was highly amusing :D :D One of the most enjoyable things about this track though is getting to know it so well that you can anticipate all the quirky twists and turns. It's so much fun!

I was given the opportunity to see YES live when they toured on this album's release. I never would have chosen to see them myself. DUDE! To this day it remains the best concert I have ever seen! There talent live is beyond description. I went straight out and bought this album the next day. Every song is absolute magic. Fire. Bomb. However you want to term it. Pure genius!
I was at the concert in Stockholm, the first stop on the Europe tour in 1984. Through sheer luck I ended up on the second row smack in the middle, close enough to see the sweat on Anderson's forehead. The best concert I ever experienced.
I saw this tour and ABWH on the next tour, and then the 8-piece tour for "Union." (A long-winded way of saying "I saw all the tours, including Tormato and Drama.) This was probably the least amazing of the tours. Much more conventional.
Definitely a divisive song in the YES playlist. It is so different than nearly every song that came before it, largely due to the change up in the band. The long time guitarist, Steve Howe had left the band as well as the various keyboardists (Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz, Geoff Downes) and the vocalist, Jon Anderson. Bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White were left and began working with South African guitarist Trevor Rabin. Soon, the original keyboardist for the band, Tony Kaye was brought in and the band, now called "Cinema" distributed some demos with mixed reactions. I think it was Squire that brought some of the demos to Anderson who liked the new, fresh direction of the songs and had some suggestions. He was invited to sing with them and when things clicked it was obvious that if he were to join up they would again be "Yes." What followed was a very bumpy but creative ride for everyone involved. They created some memorable music by infusing Pop music with the craft and musicianship of Progressive rock. Many old Yes fans gave a thumbs down to the new sensibility but the band moved forward. I've been a fan since the mid 70s and actually like the "Rabin Years" Yes (90125, Big Generator, Union, Talk) but my heart will always be centered on the music they made between 1971 and1981 including "I've Seen All Good People" which you listed. That tune's studio recording is great but perhaps dated with the technology. The live recording from 1973's Yessongs shows the classic lineup of the band and their ridiculously powerful talent and energy (the Yessongs film is available on UA-cam.) As far as other Yes songs that may interest you, "Roundabout," and "South Side of the Sky" from Fragile, "And You And I" from Close to the Edge, "Sound Chaser" from Relayer, and "Parallels," "Wondrous Stories," and "Awaken" from Going for the One. Except for Sound Chaser and Awaken most of these are shorter tunes. The epics such as "Close to the Edge" "Ritual" and "The Gates of Delirium" are amazing but a lot to bite off at the beginning. - sorry for the run-on, but of all the bands I've listened to over the years, these guys hold a special place. (oh...they're still putting out albums and are currently on tour in the U.K. Last studio album was 2021!)

Trevor Horn was the golden boy producer of the early 80s, and he pulled out all the stops with this one. The synth sounds are from a CMI Fairlight, a very early sampling synth, used to create the orchestral "hits" from samples.

I've seen all good people is a great earlier release - their discography is decades long and impressive to the highest standards of the greats like RUSH and Zeppelin. 90125 and Big Generator are very underrated albums. We used them often to sell high end speakers at Roger Sound Labs in So Cal. Starship trooper is up near the top - it's a RIDE! Aim High Shoot Low is a VIBE and plenty more - strap in for a long trip!
"Heart of the sunrise" by Yes is a masterpiece and so is "Close to the Edge" and "starship Trooper" is great - they are genius musicians!!! cream of the crop!! Very sadly to say - Rest In Peace bass player Chris Squire and drummer Alan White and Steve Howe the guitar player's beloved son.......very sad
This sounds more like Rush to me than Yes. It is a fun, dance-able tune. But people (critics) need to lighten up. Exciting is a great comment. More Yes, yes. (but don't forget that deep Genesis hole!)

I was young when this came out but I remember it very well. My music teachers were very into progressive rock and saw the writing on the wall after Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves, but had kind of written Rush off and held on to the orchestral, lengthy, classically-influenced stuff that bands like Yes were doing. I heard "I've Seen All Good People" a million times and thought "oh, this is the same band?" The backlash was very very real. However, I think the fact this song is INCREDIBLE, the performances are sublime, and production is top-notch - it hooked them eventually. I liked it back then, I still do, and love this style. I would love to be in a band that writes songs like this. My music teachers came around eventually and now we listen to this, we listen to Rush's "Subdivisions", and we reminisce about the good times again.

3:33 That synthesizer was a Fairlight CMI which was one of the very first digital samplers. When they first came out in 1979 they cost $32,000 which is about $129,000 in 2022 dollars. It is a short sample of an orchestra. They call it a orchestral stab. Of course nowadays just about any cheap toy keyboard could make that sound. You can also get that sound for free by downloading it from a sample library site. But back in 1983 it was pretty rad. ZZ Top and lot's of other bands used it too.
yes now go and listen to Art of Noise from this same era, and Trevor Horn being the clever producer he was used these same orchestral stabs and more. I think Beat Box has this same sample, and Close to the Edit has the lo fi drum fill sample iirc
LOL...yeah, there is a lot going on in this song. As an original YES lineup fan I wasn't really sure about the "new" sound when this came out, but after listening to it a few times I really started to appreciate it. Now I regularly listen to 90125 and the Big Generator albums and I definitely appreciate the production and sound that the band put out in that Era. Chris and his bass play always stood out!

Look up "Orchestra Hit" on UA-cam. That's the BOMP sound you hear repeatedly. Done on a synth. Really fascinating how a classical piece was chopped, put in a synth, and became one of the most heard sounds in the 80s.

"Heart of the sunrise" by Yes is a masterpiece and so is "Close to the Edge" and "starship Trooper" is great - they are genius musicians!!! cream of the crop!! Very sadly to say - Rest In Peace bass player Chris Squire and drummer Alan White and Steve Howe the guitar player's beloved son.......very sad
Chris is quite possibly the most bad ass bassist to ever walk the planet IMO.

This sounds more like Rush to me than Yes. It is a fun, dance-able tune. But people (critics) need to lighten up. Exciting is a great comment. More Yes, yes. (but don't forget that deep Genesis hole!)

Welcome to the world of Trevor Horn, brief member of Yes who co-wrote and produced this song. He was largely responsible for creating this Dance-Rock genre move for Yes. No surprise, given his prowess as a keyboardist/synthesizer player, music composer and producer. He isn't called "The Man Who Invented The Eighties" for nothing...he even went down in history as half the of act (The Buggles) of the first ever video played on MTV in August 1981, "Video Killed The Radio Star."
I was young when this came out but I remember it very well. My music teachers were very into progressive rock and saw the writing on the wall after Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves, but had kind of written Rush off and held on to the orchestral, lengthy, classically-influenced stuff that bands like Yes were doing. I heard "I've Seen All Good People" a million times and thought "oh, this is the same band?" The backlash was very very real. However, I think the fact this song is INCREDIBLE, the performances are sublime, and production is top-notch - it hooked them eventually.
I liked it back then, I still do, and love this style. I would love to be in a band that writes songs like this. My music teachers came around eventually and now we listen to this, we listen to Rush's "Subdivisions", and we reminisce about the good times again.

3:33 That synthesizer was a Fairlight CMI which was one of the very first digital samplers. When they first came out in 1979 they cost $32,000 which is about $129,000 in 2022 dollars. It is a short sample of an orchestra. They call it a orchestral stab. Of course nowadays just about any cheap toy keyboard could make that sound. You can also get that sound for free by downloading it from a sample library site. But back in 1983 it was pretty rad. ZZ Top and lot's of other bands used it too.

yes now go and listen to Art of Noise from this same era, and Trevor Horn being the clever producer he was used these same orchestral stabs and more. I think Beat Box has this same sample, and Close to the Edit has the lo fi drum fill sample iirc

LOL...yeah, there is a lot going on in this song. As an original YES lineup fan I wasn't really sure about the "new" sound when this came out, but after listening to it a few times I really started to appreciate it. Now I regularly listen to 90125 and the Big Generator albums and I definitely appreciate the production and sound that the band put out in that Era. Chris and his bass play always stood out!

I played the cassette tape in my car every day on my way home from college and cranked it. This was my favorite.
Look up "Orchestra Hit" on UA-cam. That's the BOMP sound you hear repeatedly. Done on a synth. Really fascinating how a classical piece was chopped, put in a synth, and became one of the most heard sounds in the 80s.
