i am surprised how similar they sound
Im assuming thats because the main sound is determined by the same cab that is being used on both amps, even though the amps are rather dissimilar tonally
@@Alterwill That makes no sense. Using the same cab is the control, eliminating variables and letting each amps characteristics stand evenly against the other
@@konos-p8842 True, the cab is acting as the control here. But what Im implying is that testing diverse cabs with different speakers with the given amps is the key to achieving a drastically different tone, rather than changing amps on one given cab, if that makes sense
@@Alterwill You're right, but when comparing two of anything, you need to keep everything else the same.
To have satisfy your point, he would need to test both heads on multiple cabs and I can't think of anyone who would have the time or patience to do that when one control is good
@@konos-p8842 Yes, absolutely!
Shootout an EVH 5150 iii 6L6 vs EL34!!!! Please! Love your videos Fluff.
Definitely would like to see a Marshall JCM vs Dual Rectifier shootout
I'm surprised how much more "open" the 5150 sounds, it feels like there's so much headroom that I was wondering if there was any reverb on it. From a proud owner of a Dual rec
This is the first time I haven’t been to tell the difference in amps on a my phone. I’m usually pretty good at hearing it but they sound the same to me. I need to re-listen on my studio headphones. But I do know they both sound awesome. I really want one of the EVH el34 50 and a 6534+.
Turns out they just sound similar. Lol. Both awesome though. I couldn’t get Mesa amps to work for me though so I’m going back to orange and some variant of a 5150.
MAN! This was a tough one... going in I honestly thought I would be able to say the Mesa without even listening, but the EVH took it for me this time. Both are fantastic amps, though.
How about a comparison of the Revv 120 and the Helix Revv 120 red channel. If you do so, you know you'll have to show the Helix settings as well! Hope to see it.
I'm playing in a metal band as the only guitarist, and thinking about getting a second amp head to run stereo... The bass player would also be adding some distortion thru darkglass pedals, helping to fill out that "doubling sound" that is missing from not having two guitarists. I like the sound of the EVH better than the Rectifier, but I'm wondering which would sound best blended with the amp I already have, a Peavey 6505+. Feel like the Rectifier would probably give it more girth instead of just doubling up on the clear cutting mids of the EVH and 6505+.
It’s Mesa all the way for me! I just got a Mark V and it’s my first Mesa amp! I did a First Look video on it but haven’t had a chance to do an in depth review yet. I love EVH and have 2 Striped series so I really want to love the 5150 but I’m just not there yet: great shootout!
I'd love to hear a shootout between the 5150 III 6l6 and the 5150 III el34 to see how different/similar they sound
The 6l6 EVH is a PANSY AMP..
@@runnningonempty your mummy
Yuh gotta boost the blue channel on the EVH my friend. The gain knob works great on that channel.
These are by far, my two most favorite amps
Multi-watt Dual Rectifier with 6L6 vs. EVH 5153 el34, please.
Can you do a comparison between the 5150 III el34 50w and a modern dual rectifier? And, in this video here, which amp do you prefer if you had to choose one, the 5150 3 or a dual rectifier boosted if you had to choose one?
Do a EVH 5150 III EL34 and a JVM. As a former JVM owner that is the advancement the EVH made -- its Red is WAY more usable than the JVM.
Please shootout a mesa mark V and evh 5150 3
Or the ENGL Powerball 2 vs Mark V
Both sound very similar, both very awesome.
I actually loved the 5150 boosted
Can you please do the Rockerverb MKIII vs the 5150 (or Invective if you still have it?) Thanks!!!
I want to hear your old 5150 vs the old Mesa dual rec vs your old timey jcm 800 , all of my favorite amps by the way
I thought the EVH had a little sizzle in the high end. I prefered the recto but both did sound great. I'd like to hear some Framus amps in shootouts.
Fluff.... you know what I don't see much. Crate Blue Voodoo 120 Tube heads. I remember those sounding pretty boss.... but how do they compare? The Fluff can discover
Pretty wild how similar they sound.
Would love to hear this redone with your block letter
Fluff do this again but with the 50W Steath vs the Dual Rec
They sounded very similar surprisingly, but the mesas lows were lower and thus in my opinion it sounded better
Now that's what I call a clean tone! ;)
EVH Has some more punch to it, but I think the Mesa sounds fuller on the lower tuned strings. Also, I agree they do sound quite similar
The boost seemed to push it to more of a lo-fi kind of sound. I'm going with unboosted in this context, but there is a time and a place for the boost.
Actually both the Rectifier and 5150 are based on the preamp of the Soldano SLO.
That's the reason why they are sounding so similar.
Unboosted the EVH sounded great but boosted all hail the mighty Dual Rec
My buddy prefers the block letter 5150 over the tri rec
@@jaychen2000metal Many do
Do the rockerverb against both of these. Or at least the rockerverb with the dual rec
Fluff I love the sound of 2 amps but my preference goes anyway to mesa dual rectifier
EVH for life.
Hello Fluff from Eastern WA state!
Have you ever considered a shootout between a Single Rectifier series 1 and your early 90's 2 channel recto?
Would be very interested in hearing how they sound against each other.
(Former owner of a 3 channel mk1)
I say why not double amp with both? The 5153 sounds unreal, but theres just something special about rectos, even with their shortcomings and those two complement each other well.
I think the differences were more.obvious in the mix. The evh seemed to have more presence/cut thru better. Pretty close all thibgs considered
Without the boost the EVH is miles ahead, with the boost the Mesa maybe overtakes but what if you need an amp that is a metal monster?
EVH for me although I would also like a small comparison for their "cleans" 😁
Damn... I guess cabs do matter more.
So basically they sound the same except evh has sparkly cleans as well???
i know these two amps don't actually sound THIS close like they seem in this video...you can tell the recorded sound on both as he A/Bs between the two where EQ to make them match more evenly(to me it seems that way) I had an early 2000s tripple rec and an mid 1990s PV 5150(ran in stereo), both ran through the same style marshall straight 1960 cab, and they sounded NOTHING! alike. I cant imagine a 51503 would sound this close to an amp almost 30 yrs older!
Damn sounds dope. That bass tone also 🥵🥵🥵 love it.
If only the evh 5150 el's didn't have an issue with blowing tubes extremely fast.
I couldn't REALLY notice much difference.. except that rectifier tone was just slightly thick..overall, no major difference
If you haven’t yet you should listen to that new Car Bomb album “Mordial”
the dual rec sounds better by itself, the evh sounds better in the mix.
Both togheter quad tracked must sound huge, the evh has the midrange and tight punch the mesa lacks, and the mesa has all the bottom end the evh doesn't have
I hate that because of the design of the recto knobs you can never see how they are set in people’s videos!
Recto is drier which makes it heavier
Can you do a KATANA VS 5150 III?
The Mesa is just too compressed for my tastes. For want of a better descriptor, the crunch is looser and more airy on the 5150, more compressed and saturated on the Recto. I prefer loose and airy. The thing with Mesas, and this is just from my limited experience, I think they can be dialed in to sound massive, but most Mesa owners, and I am including LOTS of pros here, dial in a bad tone with them. John Petrucci, for instance is one of my favorite guitarists, but I have never liked his tone.
Nm i just realized it says the pedal he used for boost
They are very close, i think 5150 has more mid.
I should not have watched this now I need a 5150 el84 🤤😍😬

@@GearGasms We're here if you want to talk man.
Mesa DAD rectifier vs Fifty MOM fifty
@@dantredogborsa7048 hahaha that comment actually made me laugh
Well considering the Recto's preamp is more or less a copy of the SLO100s, and Eddie made the 5150 after using the SLO100 for a while, it makes sense why both of these sorta sound a like.
5150 is a Marshall with Variac
Lucas LeCompte ya you got it with the SLO
@@ИбрагимРайнберг
LOL...not even close.
Kash Kustomer False, the Early Recto is a direct Preamp clone of a SLO with 1 or two minor changes. Watch the interview with Mike Soldano on tone talk. Also, the 5150 was made with VH during the time he was using the SLO, he had three of them. The 5150 is also SLO derived in the Preamp.
Kash Kustomer True, I was referring to you saying the Recto was probably designed from the IIC+. The Recto Preamp is a very near identical clone of the SLO. Not based off of. It’s an absolute stolen design, and I love Mesa, played them most of my life. However, the Recto came about coincidentally when the SLO was in a lot of big name rigs.
It's crazy how similar these sound! The EVH sounds just a little better unboosted but that's to be expected
They do in this video but in real life...nah. Totally different animals.
I own both. Mesa has some nice harmonic sub lows Evh dont have. On the otherside Evh has some tasty midrange compared to mesa. Tonewise they have different character. Anyway excellent amps, both have their use in my opinion.
@@Bassman16ful and Marshalls have upper mid harmonics that ring and modulate like no other.
Dustin Varner i dont think so
So what magic did he do? He actually just used the same amp for everything? @@nathanbrown9908
“I Love Amps” needs to be a shirt.
Hands down. We need this.
I love lamp
I love ramp
I’d really like to see an invective vs 6505 nobody’s done any comparisons and it’s like the invective disappeared off the face of the earth.
Such an awes me amp, it's hard to get hold of one here in Australia.
Ive played both and honestly the invective is a 6505 with alot of fancy features but they sound near identical. 6505 is the Chevy invective is the Cadillac. Lol
Christian Steinberg totally agree. So much hype on the invective and it’s like it never got out in the first place.
i had an invective in aus. it sounded like my 6505+ on crunch and lead . different clean . it kept dying and peavey couldnt fix it so I got a refund. just get a usa 5150/6505 for $600 . it will never die .
Both do metal. On a budget? Get a 5150.. Pro in a band and want to tour and record? Get a recto. But honestly they both do metal just fine. Be a better player if you cant make one work.
Well the cab contributes to like 80% of the tone. So I'm not surprised how close these 2 sounded. You should do a 3 amps comparison, I bet the third would be also quite similar. :)
That octave drop tuning is sick! Also the EVH is my favorite. Both boosted and unboosted it has that high end bite I love in amps. The Mesa boogie is kinda scooped. However when boosted, the boogie sounds incredible, the mid range is filled up and it has more definition.
These would blend well giving the Mesa low end and the EVH top end their spotlight.
RegressionMusic rectos and 5150s (Peavey) have been perfectly.paired for 20+ years!!
Truth!
Absolutely!
This variant of 5150 has just a little something different that makes it unique!!
ZackSeifMusic 5150iii has a shit ton more low end than the dual rec because of the resonance knob
Insomnium blends a 5150 with a Dual Rec on their more recent albums and it sounds so killer!
5:00 Damn you "S" for being so close to the "X"
I was just wondering where I could get myself one of those Mason OD808's. Sounds very exclusive.
"Fluff are you just looking at things in the office and saying you love them?"
Fluff - I love amps!! 😂
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!!!
LOUD NOISES!!!!
at least we know these amps didn't come from the toilet store
Toby K. Damn straight!
60% of the time they rock every time
Both sound great to me. So ill take the mesa because it's made in the USA.
Ric Fennell ain’t that the truth lol they both sit in the same price point and the Fender tryin to cheap out with the Mexican factory
This video proves the importance of the sound of the cabinet, mic’ing, and mixing techniques above all else.
I think this goes more to EL34 vs 6L6 debate and voiceing, as they both perform differently, and have different mid ranges. I prefer the EVH, but to be honest not by much. Theyre different but similar enough to where the best solution would be double tracking the guitars, one through evh and one through the dual rec to blend
"today on wrists beards and gear"
5150 EL34 vs 6L6 - the level of detail in your clips would be great in hearing the difference.
Rockerverb vs Friedman Butterslax
Block Letter 5150 vs Friedman JJ jr.
Going with the Made In USA amp.
Thanks for the content in this video, fluff. Not enough UA-camrs are doing these kinds of cool shootout videos, comparing gear that makes for a compelling comparison. I mean, these are the kind of videos that got me started watching UA-cam videos only about 4 years ago. Will you be shooting out any pickups in the near future?
Cool shoot out bruh. I know the “norm” is to throw a Boost in front of a Recto but I find my own Rev F (serial #902) to not even need one to sound tight and articulate. Then again, I don’t play the heavier stuff you play 🤷🏻♂️. Cheers 🍻
Same amp basically. Which is more reliable?
As a proud owner of a dual rectifier (new in 2007) it pains me to say, the 5150 sounded better. The Mesa had this high frequency overtone that was almost like white noise or the sound of air moving through a fan. Idk. The 5150 just had more presence and really cut through the mix. You could really hear the articulation of the notes better though the 5150.
Peavey 6505 + vs EVH 5150 iii OR Crate BV120H vs Anything
I love these shootouts, but I wish you would add a track at the end COMBINING the amps. So 5150 on one side and a Mesa on the other; just to hear how they play WITH eachother.
Personally I like the 5150 III better. Something about the entire tone sounds "tighter"? Idk if that's the exact word I'm looking for. They're almost indistinguishable though. Both kickass amps!
Came in rooting for the Recto. Left with a new respect for the 5150.
Id love to see the Orange RV vs the Block 5150
It’d be cool to do a modern metal song on old amps. Boost a plexi or bassman. See if you can make it work.
one of the worst riff writers in history
Always go with Made in USA quality.
EVH un boosted / Boogie boosted. Blended they’d both sound pretty great.
I’d like to hear a shoutout between the EVH, the Kraken and the Archon. They all have similar DNA to my ear.
That Archon is godly on the clean mid but its lacking on the gain..shame
4:58 I see the Mason makes a return....
(Also, is the Mason becoming the new inside joke for this channel?)
Excellent analogy. I would either run 5150 on left/right and the mesa the opposite or stereo with mesa on low part and 5150 for the rest. Crank it!!
All your sounds kinda seem the same, dude. Second video in a row where I can barely tell the difference, which is usually not the case.
I don't think the tone is much different across the board for many of the top high-gain amps to the listener. It's all about the response and feel for me because you really can't go wrong on stage with EVH, Peavey, Mesa, Orange etc. in your back-line.
The red channel on the 5150III EL34 50w definitely doesn't like an OD. The blue channel is a totally different story.
I wouldn't call it low end, but the EVH had this sort of fuller sound but not in like bass? like it just had more information in that lower register that filled out the speakers more? maybe its just how you mixed it? Maybe I'm crazy? i dunno! but they both were excellent and i'd be happy with either! lol
try using the rhythm channels on high gain amps..... my evh 5150II with the rhythm channels gain on 4 sounds more tight and ballz than that...Same with the Dual rec....try the solid state diode switch in back for instant pantera mid era type sounds.
I luv ya fluff...... and this is hard to not call BS but how the F do they sound soooooooo similar?!?!?!!?M?M?M?!?M?!?!?!!?? I really can’t fathom how that’s possible..... are you sure you didn’t use your vast knowledge of mixology and pull a fast one on us!!?!???!?!?!?
Unlike most Mesa Amps, the Recto was always a better version of a hot rod Marshall.... so it was no surprise they sounded nearly identical. The 5150 was a bit bouncy, but that cleaned up with the OD. I thought the Recto sounded better solo, but the 5150 sat better in the full mix. Does the 5150 come in a 6L6 or 5881 Option?
Great Video!
This proves to me it's not worth paying 2300 dollars for a dual rec, when you can have an EVH for $700 mint condition that has three killer good channels. I'm super confident in my purchase with my EVH. It's the best amp in existence in my opinion. It does everything well, coming from a traveling musician who plays a lot of everything. With my EVH head, iso cab with 12" celestions, a swiss army knife-versatile pedalboard, and a super strat, there's no sound I can't create.
Seemed like I heard more clarity in the low end on the recto. All in all awesome to hear them side by side.
This Might seem odd but how about a Peavey XXX against the Rectifier just a thought.
Grim Hollows or the jsx, contrary to what people say i found the jsx to be a lot better than the xxx (ver 2), and great if you want a mesa on a budget
The EVH is a 50 watt. The 100 watt version will give the thicker bottom and still be tighter than the Mesa.
Hey fluff could u do a shootout of the mesa/boogie dual rectifier multi watt and the evh 5150 iiis el34 100w don’t know if you still have those two heads thx and loved the shootout
Both sound awesome but I think I'll go with the unboosted EVH. Overall the EVH's sound is more defined en meaner.
