  • Ventilation fans is one of my most favourite type of fans. They come in a massive variety of sizes, functions, designs and purposes. From the tiniest DC fans used in laptops & tablets to giant exhaust fans like the one used to ventilate Queensway Mersey tunnel, all of them never fail to amuse me.
    So when this fan came up for sale, I of course freaked out! I have only seen less than 5 other examples in my life, one of them with my own 2 eyes. I analyzed the listing pictures & all parts of this fan seem to be intact, so I made a beeline for the DMs section & told the seller I’ll pay whatever amount, just give me that thing. 2 days later, it arrived to me & indeed, 98% of this fan is original! It’s absolutely jawdropping to see an exhaust fan this old in this decent shape, usually exhaust fans are uncared for & people don’t consider these as valuable antiques. The shutter is usually the first part to go missing, and when the 80’s came around, these either blew their motors because the owners plug them into 220V, or they got so used up that they just deteriorated into nothing by the 2020’s.
    One of this fan’s previous owners used a step down transformer to make it work as proven by the 2 holes drilled into the lower left part of the fan shroud, and sometime in its life the motor got rewound to make it run on 220V, which for me is good news since I only need to work on the cosmetics & the rubby frictiony bushingy parts. The blades on this fan once hit something pretty hard which gouged one of the aluminium blades & bent 2 blades out of clock, but I fixed that prior to filming because the blades would hit the shutters if I left it as is.
    I’m pleasantly surprised by how quiet this fan is & how much air it moves. I thought the weirdly shaped blades which don’t have that much pitch would sound buzzy & generate little airflow, but the exact opposite is true! Matsushita sure knew what they were doing back then.

    Very retro industrial KDK exhaust fan! I'm surprised that Japan has had exhaust fans since the 1950s!

      It’s not the earliest vent fan that came out of Japan. As far as I know, KDK manufactured ventilating fans from as early as 1920 I believe!

    WOAH! thats rare and so cool. I really wanted a vintage fan few days ago i got it [a National F-406 nm desk fan late 1980s] the seller really suck as she said nothing about it but when i got it theres an huge crack in the blade making it unusable, the motor dose run powerful.

      There’s nothing you can’t fix if you’re willing to invest time & energy to perfecting the skills. I myself learnt that through the tons of banged up old fans I’ve fixed

    Next time you should get a Cosmos 16 WFL wall fan, yesterday I found 2 Cosmos WFLs in South Jakarta back in January 8, 2023. These are rare indeed.

      I don’t feel like dipping my feet in Cosmos’s world. I am interested by their 80’s fans, but I’m not actively looking out for them

    judging from parts of the fan, it was originally blue? is that correct?
    also, nice catch!

      @TheFanUniverse  Рік тому +1

      It’s greenish-blue, a pretty common color used by Matsushita on these era vent fans
