I was in Berlin several times shortly after 'die Wende'. Only years later I realised how special those moments were in history. Thank you for this nice video! For a while I was back in '89/'90.

I visited Berlin during that time, it felt as if there was magic in the air - we all expected the Berlin situation to end as part of another terrible war, so for everything to end peaceably was 'simply fantastic'.

The period between the fall of the wall and reunification was a most interesting time in Berlin’s history. Once in a lifetime.

Yes! I was so pleased to be able to visit Berlin in December 1989 (between Christmas and New Year 1990) and again in April 1990 to see the city in this time period.
Even though my visits were only 4 months apart I noticed some differences!

@@CitytransportInfoplus Yes the last the last time I was in Berlin was 1988, before there was even any talk about the wall coming down. Would love to go back there eventually to see how everything has changed.

I remember visiting Berlin in 1990. I had studied in Berlin in 1978 and how the city was during the division. It was so strange to be able to visit Berlin, the Berlin my mother grew up in once again a single city.

Thank you very much for sharing this video!
Back then I was only 10 years old. I still remember the Live show from Pink Floyd in 1990, live on tv. My parents had the volume way up! I always wondered how things look back then, shortly after the fall of the wall. I've been in Berlin, years ago, but never seen it when it was like this.
    The video was very informative!

    • @CitytransportInfoplus

Thanks for watching and commenting. Even by April things had started to change. For instance, part of the wall had been removed and some U-Bahn stations reopened, although only East Berliners travelling to / from the west were allowed to pass through these stations.
It was with utter astonishment that one evening in 1989 I turned on the 10pm TV news and saw that the wall had opened and Easterners were allowed to visit the West. Once they saw the range of foods, clothing and other consumer goods which were in plentiful supply they knew that things needed to change (for them).
I first went to Berlin in December 1989 and in the big department store (called Centrum) in Alexander Platz I saw signs in their fresh fruit department saying that only people with Berlin residency papers were allowed to buy these items. Of course they meant East Berlin residents but at that time even a mention of the existence of a 'West' Berlin was forbidden! These signs were in four languages - German, English Russian and another one which I forget. Possibly French (I am unsure). The 'quality' of the foods on sale was appalling. Alas, I did not even try to take photos of the signs, in case I found myself in trouble.

Thank you for the extra information. I did know that the reopened one U-Bahn station, together with restoring the Oberbaumbrücke, which is a beautifull bridge!
When I was in Berlin, i also brought a visit to the museum: Berliner Unterwelten, it's worth a visit!
I can imagine how that must have felt, to seeing the news on tv!
I also was very impressed by the brothers how flew over the wall with a very small (name?) airplane, beautifull footage.
I'm glad for you, that the wall is down, but i wish that i was born 10 years earlier, so that i could see this history with my own eyes.

Thank you. Visiting Berlin was a surreal experience - not just because of its direct link to WW2 but because of what I saw and unfortunately could not film in East Berlin. For instance, the fruit section in a large shop called Centrum located in Alexanderplatz where there were signs in four languages (English, German, Russian and one more) saying that only people who lived in (East) Berlin were allowed to buy the fruit.

Having visited on three visits more recently and been enthralled by Berlin today, I have often wondered what it was like in the period covered by your video. Much as I would have liked to have been there then, I much prefer it now. Given its rise from the ashes and the hiatus under the communists, Berlin is a credit to is citizens.

24:25 To build the electromagnetic train there, was a confession of disbelief in the German union. The discussion about the status of Berlin as capital, showed, that they never expected, what happened in 1990. It was to easy to promise over 40 years "Berlin will be the capital, Bonn is temporarily", when there seems no chance. As long, I doesn't get one million $, I can easily promise to someone, I would give him half of them
