please make similar interview with powerful figure with powerful points. Such a wonderful interview this has been, I rewatched this today after 5-6 years, same impact and learning points.
I agree. My 2nd time watching and will watch a 3rd. I left the USA and started an international consultation firm. These 36 minutes have been so helpful.
I really wish I could have someone of the caliber of Kevin as a mentor. Someone who is so knowlegeable but still holds true to values and principles that are ever less and less important in this modern society.
Hi Daniel, we have 6 in depth programs done with Kevin, hundreds of episodes as part of Titans of Strategy series and The Consulting Offer II. So you can have Kevin as your virtual mentor because in those programs Kevin goes in depth on various subjects required to help you be successful in your career and make an impact. Programs include How to Become a McKinsey Partner, How to Solve Big Problems, How to be Successful, Influential and Make an Impact, Competitive Strategy, Advanced Competitive Strategy as well as TCO II (covers basic problem solving, communication, networking etc). You can view all our FC Insider programs on StrategyTraining.com/Strategy Training apps. And you are welcome to reach out to support@firmsconsulting.com to learn how to become FC Insider.
This is the kind of video you watch routinely. There is so much insight here that needs time to grow in the mind. I am going to be pondering on how the # of objective function differentiates consulting firms, client companies and the government. Thank you for getting Kevin Coyne on FC!
This is gold. I have paid prices along the way as a consultant in the last 10 years. Doubted myself, contemplated whether I should start shifting my line because so many people rise high got there with that. But after watching this video, I’m now confident that I’ve made the right choice that I can live with for the rest of my life. Thank you for sharing this for free!
What a powerful interview! It really shows what make a management consultant successful. Although there is one phrase that opened my mind and made me act differently in my life. "Values is when you are willing to pay the price, for doing what you think is right". I come to this video once in a while to review it and gather even more insights from it.
I couldn't have said this better Gustavo. You are right about the impact of the quote you shared. It's a timeless episode, constantly reverberating the very essence of management consulting.
A wonderful interview. I found Kevin Coyne's story incredibly informative and inspiring. He exudes honesty and authenticity in a way that I have never seen from any professional.
There is this calmness, honesty and authority in the way he talks. I not only love how he lays out his thoughts but also how he admits he is imperfect.
Incredible interview. Props to Kevin for his honesty and transparency. You can tell that he did not lead a perfect career path, but continues to move forward because he is truly passionate about what he does. This was very inspirational, not only from a business success context but as a human being. Keep moving forward Kevin!!!
Thanks Firms Consulting for sharing this interview with us, it teaches you on a compelling way a whole new perspective of consultancy. Cant wait to get to TCO 2 and learn more from Kevin Coyne.
This is an amazing interview. Its like you are having a conversation. The level on which Kevin talks about is out of this world, very insightful. Thankyou!
LIked the comment on Gandhi. My best businesses & movements were based on those same ideas. Many people were led without $, and the energy of what started always lasted longer and still lasts today. GREAT tips in this video. Thx to all who shared & participated. #NotesTaken
Thanks for sharing! Not only did this video provide a wealth of knowledge, it provided one of the best answers to the ethics question. Great use of examples and I could see the passion Kevin holds for his values.
Very insightful and inspiring. I had a Jiu-Jitsu coach who had this exact same words on values and ethics. Amazing how inspiring people can really motivate us.
Wow! Very honest and straight forward... I learnt a lot ... Thank You... I have every thing it takes to do the job you do except an MBA from a fancy college.. bur I know some day I will get there
Thank you very much for this very insightful, interesting and useful interview. The part on ethics is of rare honesty, on a topic only rarely evoked in the business world. This will help those who watch the video to certainly better shape their career and personal choices.
I respect you greatly for being honest and forthright.... so many forget apart of maintaining high integrity is to say what you think and on the flip side do the same. Do not hold the truth against those willing to lay it on the line to be who they are as a real through Consultant!
Excellent interview. To be honest, I think Gupta as a former managing director was well aware of the risks he was taking sharing that information to a person who could act on it to make profit. Even as a board member of Goldman, he must have been aware. This wasn't idle gossip. It was people like Kevin that made the Firm, not the Guptas of this world. If I was a partner, I would make ethics questions a part of the interview process.
You are totally right, it's people like Kevin who made the firm. However, including ethics questions in the interview process will not help weed out the corrupt ones.
Hi Op Con. Yes, well said. If you want to learn more about why McKinsey is number one check out Marketing Saves the World book on Amazon (a memoir written by former McKinsey Partner Bill Matassoni). amzn.to/2xcJqYA (paid link) Bill shares there what specifically was done for McKinsey to overtake BCG. Hope you enjoy it. There is also The Bill Matassoni Show on StrategyTraining.com that you may enjoy. And, of course, How to Become a McKinsey Partner program by Kevin on StrategyTraining.com is a great program if you are currently working for one of top firms and want to make a partner there/get promoted.
if what he is saying is true, and forgive me for my skepticism of businessmen nowadays, and i dont see why i have any reason to think otherwise (presumption of innocence and all that), i have much respect for this dude. im not sure if ull read this comment, since theres the offchance u might (given that this is ur company channel after all), but mckinsey is one of my target companies i wish to join, and ur mock-self-interview has solidified my impression of what mckinsey people are like (well not all obviously, but at least it has managed to produce people whom i respect and whose values mirror my own). it is somewhat subtlely apparent that youre still a bit conflicted on some decisions uve made (but i might be wrong) in ur career which cost u...where u stuck to your values (from what i can discern from ur expressions when talking about those topics). i applaud u for ur honesty, and thank u for being so courageous in sharing this with us. who knows, we might meet sometime in the future at some mckinsey alumni event if everything goes to plan fingers crossed. ;)

I think it's a "timeless episode" on management consulting ..dense and deep...and worth coming back again and again!
Glad it was helpful
Just what I was thinking. Listening again and I feel exactly the same way.
I agree. My 2nd time watching and will watch a 3rd. I left the USA and started an international consultation firm. These 36 minutes have been so helpful.
I just noticed this was 7 years ago yet it still applies today. Consulting industry is truly
an amazing industry.

Racist comment

Saul wasn't a harvard MBA grad with 25 years of experience at Mckinsey though xD

Wow, you remind me of me.
Wonder if he would recommend drug companies give rebates to doctors that get patients hooked on opiates - like McKinsey did for Purdue?
