  • U.S. anthem at the 2004 Olympics. I posted this because this version sounds very similar to the 2008 version. In fact, the Chinese apparently copied this version to use at Beijing.

Usually I don't like my countries anthem very much, but this version and the 2008 version make it my favorite anthem. I'm not sure why, but these versions have a sort of sophisticated and serious, but almost sombre sound, rather than the loud and typical in your face military march style it usually is.

Really sad that this version is not used more often. Beautiful and melodic. Use of this one should be encouraged in concert halls.

One of my all time favorite renditions of the National Anthem. My heart soars whenever I hear it.

The way that this and the other anthems were performed either brought most of them back to their 19th Century romantic roots or viewed through that lens. In our case, through that lens because Key's poem was set to "To Anacreon in Heaven." By the War of 1812, it was a well-known drinking song. I think "The Star Spangled Banner" fits the music better.

came from Adam Neely's video on the anthem, and after listening this is probably my favorite rendition.
while I am a US citizen I'm not particularly patriotic, but this one is just so pretty I feel it can be appreciated from a musical standpoint.

      Not particularly patriotic?
      I’m sad for you.
I tear up every stinking time I hear our anthem played.
I’m at my ugly cry stage when there are athletes with gold medals around their necks.
Those are Americans that were the best. They don’t just win for themselves (but they should be personally proud, for sure).
They won for the honor, and support of every American watching.

0:30 onwards is fantastic to me! I get the feeling that those two pictures signify the pride that each athlete has for their respective nation and also the respect of the nations that his counterparts call home. To see three different athletes, from three different nations happy for one another is true sportsmanship!

I wish they picked this instead of the version used in Rio. And Sochi. And Pyongchang. Hopefully, Tokyo's rendition will be different.

The reharmonization reminds me of Addie MS's rendition of Tanah Airku

I agree. I like this version, but I recall controversy due to some people thinking it sounded too "European".
