I have greatly enjoyed all of your videos about the Tokaj region and it's range of wines. With my wife being Hungarian I was introduced to Tokaji Aszu and the range of wines more than 10 years ago. I found the video about the geology and topography of particular interest, though I think only serious WSET students and/or wine geeks would understand the deep dive into this topic.
The dry wines seem to be growing in complexity and quality recently and with Burgundy and other fine white regions prices climbing steadily they do seem to offer a great QPR. The noble trio are Furmint, Harslevelu and Sarga Muskotaly; though some wineries also use Koverszolo or Zeta for a more exotic & unique flavor profile. Visiting the region in 2016 was a highlight, as
being in those deep, grey mould covered cellars full of Aszu and Eszencia felt like I was Ali Baba in the cave full of treasure. 🤣
Tokaji Aszu is held in such high esteem in Hungary that there is a line in their national anthem about it, as far as I know the only country in the world where wine is mentioned in it's national anthem. The reason for the mini-Tokaj region across the border in Slovakia is due to the Treaty of Trianon or the Peace Dictate of Trianon, when in 1920 Hungary lost more that 70% of its territory.
As far as favorite producers that's an interesting question, as with the big or prestigious producers such as Royal Tokaj, Oremus, Disznoko, Sauska, and Szepsy, the quality is pretty consistent. But with smaller wineries such as Chateau Dereszla (amazing method traditional sparkling wine, btw), Gizella, Arvay, Himesudvar, Pazjos, and Zsirai are IMHO, making more exciting and individual wines. As well as offering better value for money. Great videos and informative and educational. If you're up for something a big more goofy, as well as a good laugh; check out this series.ua-cam.com/video/2uUAPwKRqlE/v-deo.html. Cheers!
