    Vande Sangeetam!
To music, I take a bow. It gives us so much, from rejuvenating our spirits and cleansing our mind, to a sense of physical well being and a definite spiritual direction if we choose. Sometime during our life, we need to prostrate before this power. We attempt here to share all that it has given us- Composers, ragas, thoughts on puranas. We also try to look at what we should do, individually and collectively, to ensure that its purity and profound beauty are passed on to the generation next.
Recorded in natural settings at Kalakshetra campus, Chennai.

Senior musicians like Vijay Siva sir are playing a great role in preserving and propagating our precious musical tradition.
It is very unfortunate that there is no monument in memory of the great Pitamaha. Sincerely hope people from the music community (artists, sabhas, mutts, rasikas, etc) collectively work towards this. We owe a lot to him!

This is so true. In fact I've had multiple debates with some Chennai musicians who even do not acknowledge that Purandaradasa is the pitaamaha.

    Namaste Sir.
I have always had great respect for Purandara dAsar aka The pitAmah of Music.
Of late I happened to discover a new greatness of dAsar's devotional Songs.
I am convalescing after a total knee replacement in my right leg two weeks ago.
The excruciating pain keeps me awake at night.
DAsar's songs played in low volume make me forget my pain and relax.
Music is indeed a great medicine for the human mind and body.
    VandE sangeetam!

Many years ago, I remember watching a documentary named Kanak Purandara made by Films Division ( I realized this documentary still exists in UA-cam; it, too, starts with Shri Gananatha Sinduravarna). Carnatic music wasn't something I was actively listening to at that point, so just happened to remember the " nose-ring miracle" story and certain philosophical aspects of the bard's thoughts, and about his very important role in the pan-India Bhakti cult. Knowing the vakgeykara whose genius extended from formalizing the beginner's lesson plan for one of the most amazing genres of Indian music to heart-warming compositions like Jagadodharana happened much later.
Today's beautiful presentation, steeped in stories interspersed with songs ( your inimitable style of narration that I have become a fan over the many episodes of Vande Sangeetam) brought back memories of the movie, with a deeper appreciation of the musical genius of Purandaradasa. Excellent choice of song excerpts accompanied with explanations, I heard most of these for the first time. His student Swami Haridasa being a bridge between the Hindustani and Carnatic genres of music has been a piece of information that has always fascinated me, so thanks for highlighting that as well as expounding Purandaradasa 's genius in the broader context of music of India, not just Carnatic.
Great episode, very enjoyable and informative. Thank you.

Salutations to the saint, and kudos to you for selecting this topic of pithamaha for veneration. 🙏🙏
And not only music, through his songs, which he sang as a wandering medicant on the streets, he gave very strong clear messages to the common man as a great social reformer 🙏 he has clearly condemned the hypocrisys of the society, and unhesitent corrective measures...in absolute commonman's diction. 🙏🙏🙏

What a fantastic episode!! One of the great aspects of Purandaradasa compositions was that they were usually impromptu and in lay-mans language. Native Kannada speakers will truly appreciate and recognize the language. Contrast this against the Telegu and Tamil compositions of that era where language was very different from today.

My namaskarams to Sir and would like to thank Sir for making an episode on the great Sangita Pitamaha of Carnatic Music and also to have made known to people through a platform such as UA-cam that the contribution of the Madhwa saints such as Shripada Tirtha , Vyasa Tirtha to the field of Carnatic Music is immense, which clearly set the foundation for Carnatic Music to be identified uniquely post Jayadeva Kavi.

It is really pathetic that Shri Prandaradasa did not get the recognition he greatly deserve. Not many (including carnatic music learners) know that he formalized the learning process. He is not included in the Music Trinity too.

Unfortunately, bhagavata sampradaya of katha kalakshepa-myth making stories is so popular and takes the primary interest over the true richness, value contributions of vaggeyakaras e.g. lakhs of dasara padas by Purandara Dasa. Both Vyasa and Dasa koota composers of dasara padas, seniors to Purandara Dasa were lakshanikas. Vidyaranya -Sangita Sara (1320-1380), truly the Sangita Pitamaha.
If practitioners and rasikas desire to pay homage, work on revival of karna parampara, record, publish-notating and performing. We have almost lost them. There are only few dasas and gruhinis living with pata of karnaparampara. There is urgency for this work rather than monument which at the best will receive attention during jayanti or vardhanti celebrations.
