In Jamaica we use Yellow yam & sweet potatoes but sweet potato is sweet while yellow yam can be nice & dry even semi-dry they are surely different in look & taste.

The Jamaican sweet potato also has more of a whiter flesh.

I think the confusion comes from a dish called candy yams, but made with Sweet potatoes.

You’re so right because I am from Brazil 🇧🇷 and my grandmother used to cook yams that used to be found in our yard… good for respiratory problems and even accelerate Amune system..

Exactly. When black people from Africa arrived in the USA, they came across the Sweet potato. And it was close enough, so they started calling it a yam and that's where the mixup happened.

It just dawned to me that we do have yams in Brazil that look exactly like the one you show (albeit smaller) and we call them inhame, which sounds pretty much like yam 😅

There called yams due to slavery.
It was a substitute for the yam.
The American black slave is why they are called yams, also haitian and all surrounding island slaves that cane here by way of slavery
