- Sourcing some birch spoon blanks in the forest. Woodworking, bushcraft, slow living and maker movement!
One thing I really like about slöjd and traditional crafts is that you (mostly) get your material from your surroundings. This is a small forest very close to where I live. So why not go out and do some exercise/manual labor, sawing, axing and carrying logs and blanks around like there was no tomorrow.
I brought my Gränsfors Wildlife hatchet and Silky Katanaboy with me, to this spot in the sun.. Nice and warm!
I don't want to carry all the excess shavings home, so therefore I like to prep them in the forest. I can keep on coming back to this place and pick up the rest, for a few weeks.
Remember! Always ask for permission if you’re going to cut down trees.

Hey guys! I hope this video will inspire you to go out and get a few spoon blanks from the nature. Do you source it yourself or buy spoon blanks?
I work at railways and poorly maintained infrastructure is quite common around my home. Sometimes a nice birch or maple tree grows on old tracks or cargo ramp. Since it's a matter of time before this good stuff gets cut down and tossed on a pile to rot, I have no problem with helping myself to some of it :)
Yeah, I dont Think it is the greatest idear to encourage people to just go and cut down trees like that
@@thechildofthedamned you can always pick up the wood knocked down by the wind, or park/road maintenance leftovers. Also winter is good for harvesting wood, since the trees don't pump their juices up ;)
Here in the UK almost all woodland is owned and gathering wood is a crime 😅. Although that doesnt necessarily stop me 🤫 This country is a joke
@@thechildofthedamned Hey man. Well, I'm not the one to decide what people should or shouldn't do. I hope they can think for themselves and do things that's legal and safe. If they can't do that, they shouldn't watch videos about working with sharp tools. Ask for permission if it's private land, or at least go deep into the forest, cut down small trees and carve a spoon. Or stop eating palm oil that destroys millions of trees everyday ;)
Always love free wood
Who doesn't! :D
Great video, thanks!
Thank's Jesper. It means a lot. ;)
I have been watching your videos lately. And I have to say that I really enjoy them. I have just begun carving spoons. And received the Kalthoff carving axe the other day. And started to carve out some blanks. I have learned a lot from watching your videos. Thank you. And keep up the good work.
Im super happy tp hear. The Kalthoff axe is a treat. Try Hans-Karlssons slojd axe too, that's my favorite.. Julia's is no.2 for sure.
I'll see if I can make a few more videos soon!
what a lovely day spent in the woods.
Can’t complain 😉
Getting some blanks ready... looks relaxing. Nice!
Sounds good! A great way to unstress 😉
That Katana saw!
😍
Thank you for the video. I really liked it. I love it to work "in situ" with the wood
Yeah, it's a beast! This blade here is like 3-4 years old. A new one would cut through like a chainsaw.
@@formgjortbyJonasAls hvor vildt!
Thanks you for those great inspiring Videos! I´m living in South-Germany and a part of my Family lives in Denmark near Kopenhagen!
Beautiful
Thank you Lololo! ;)
Perfect.
Thanks Forau!
what a beautiful and peaceful video =) thank you so much sir. i was wondering if thats your own land or just public land? here in sweden i have very hard time finding wood for carving. i think im not allowed to cut down trees in even public land. im a beginner carver and not finding wood has been extremely frustrating =(
Hey Jonas, det fanme lækkert det her:)
Did cutting down this tree benefit the land?
Both for sure. The tress were very close and therefore it’s suitable for getting cut down and used for sustainable crafts.
Is beech a good wood for spoon making?
Yeah Beech is actually pretty good, but it's also very hard and a bit crispy though. Maple and cherry are also very nice and not as brutal to your hands!
@@formgjortbyJonasAls Thanks for tip!
@@OpekiskaWood Sure Rick, any time. I'll make a Live session soon, be sure to be there as I'll answer as many questions I can.. Also about the basic spooncarving stuff ;)
Hi, is it allowed to cut down trees that belong to public land ?
It surely depends if you have a license to cut your own firewood. Then it is 🙂
