Hi Stuart..thank you for this video ...I have just fitted the same tank badges to my bonneville ,following your advice ....came out perfect ...very happy with the result ...thanks again for your effort in making these videos ...
Hi Stuart, First of all: Thanks for your endless flow of useful information. A word of caution concerning the new badges: I had these installed by my dealer when I bought the bike when it came out. Due to chipping off of the black paint in the name plate I ordered new ones from my dealer. Upon peeling off the old ones about 2 months ago it became apparent they either hadn’t been properly positioned (most likely a tad too high) or not pressed on hard enough or both. The result was humidity entering from the top between the nameplate and the badge leading to corrosion in and around the front screw holes. The washed in pollen on the adhesive in the gap served as a perfect indicator. Hadn’t the paint chipped off this would’ve gone on unnoticed, ultimately leading to a leaking tank. Triumph fixed the issue on warranty terms after I had sent them detailed photos of the issue.
I think that is a potential issue with any of the tank badges Juan. all you can reasonably do is make sure the badges is fixed and sealed as well as possible.
Fantastic. These badges are so great. Personally, I think they look especially good on the black T120. Really pops the simple elegance. And picks up the air fins in the motor as well. Cheers.
Before watching this video, I had thought the badge was all one chrome piece fitted to the tank. I agree that the 4 bar badge has a much nicer appearance than the other one.
I found that on one side of my tank, the badge had a gap. No contact with the adhesive. The 3M adhesive set up rock solid where it made contact. I doubt it could be pulled off. I used a glue syringe and injected black RTV silicone into the gap and wiped off the excess down behind the bar with a cotton shotgun bore patch. Looks perfect and no water will run down behind the badge. My suggestion is to be sure you press the Bloody Hell (English speak) out of the badge against the tank, FROM FRONT TO BACK, as Stuart suggests, before the adhesive fully engages at the back. The pin will hold the general placement.
Thank you! I just installed mine and one one side it's perfect, the other has a gap in the curve. I pressed it hard, from front to back and went out several times during the first 24 hours to just press the damn badges. Still failed with one. I saw some recommended to fit the screw in the open hole for the first 24 hours just to press it down firmly in the middle, take it out and then put the triumph-logo on. Too late for me, though, but maybe a help to some others! I had big plans to wash my bike when I spotted it, I guess I'll have to copy you with the silicone (and letting it cure before I can finally wash my bike.)
First time commmenter here... Love your videos. These actually came on my bike from the dealer... Didn't even realise they weren't standard till I saw this :). When I did my test ride I was just so taken by the look of the bike as a whole that I wasn't committing every detail to memory. And when I bought mine (from a different dealer than my test ride was at) I just said I wanted a T120 black graphite and that was what I got (with the upgraded badges). And I actually just got a compliment on them from another T120 owner at a vintage British Bike meet/ride I was at today here in Los Angeles (my first... LOTS of amazing bikes there)!
100% agree with you about the badges. I found the stock ones a bit disappointing. The 4-bar ones make the bike look so much better. The cynic in my makes me think that Triumph uses mediocre looking stock badges so that people will go and spend an extra £94 on proper ones! Anyway., congrats on the new badges. Uncle Stu's bike is looking even more classy now, which hardly seemed possible!
Not having a hair dryer, I use a large plastic liquid detergent bottle, eg. Morrisons , but others are available, filled with hot water. The temperature can be adjusted by adding cold water until it's comfortable to hold. Good for warming tank and pads without risk of overheating.
Here's an alternate method of removing those badges for those that, like me don't have a hair dryer either. Instead use a piece of string. Holding it vertically with both hands at either end, one above and one below, insert the string under one corner of the badge. Then slowly "floss" your way to the other end. Make sure you don't pull towards you at any point, or as Stuart says you might make the opposite corner of the badge scrape the tank. Just slide the string flush with the surface of the tank using a slight flossing/serrating motion until you've gone clear from one end to the other. Using this method both badges came off very easily, at least in my case.
@@stuartfillingham always interesting well thought out and produced videos. Your channel impelled me to a dealer and the purchase of a T120. I had those badges fitted as part of the deal. I had no idea how they were fitted...... But now I do.
@@stuartfillingham7011 Sir indeed. Triumph owes it to you to make their bikes so appealing to potential buyers. They couldn't have got a better brand ambassador for the Bonneville.
Hi Stuart! Great video. I wanted to install these on my 2017 Street Cup, so purchased a set. Apparently my tank is smaller than the T120, as they were not curved properly for this tank. However I was able to carefully 'bend' them into a reasonable fit, and they fit up pretty well, and they look a treat! Also installed the Motone Union Jack knee pads which are great. I'd installed the Triumph accessory ones, and they fell off after about 3 months!! The Motone pieces are stuck tight and fit great!
@@SentientEgg I also got these for my Street Twin (actually Speed Twin 900 w/ same tank) hoping they'd be close enough to make work. The bottom forward corner sits a good 1/4" away from tank. I can't imagine bending to fit or stacking additional double side adhesive will work. What did you end up doing? Are you pleased with the end result?
Thanks - I found no need for the hair dryer. I just carefully pried a small part of the badge back, enough to use pliers to get better leverage. The insert can’t be saved anyway. I then used a plastic card to gently lever the main badge off.
Looks much better Stuart. I imagine the alcohol wipe supplied is intended for preparing the surface of the supplied Triumph insert and not as a tank prep but yes panel wipe is the way to go for that.
That's quite funny I didn't realize your Triumph T20 had the 4 bar Triumph badge on the tank. The bike I just bought today 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120 looks just like yours it's black with that badge you installed.
I bought these for my Speed Twin 900 (same tank) and the shape is farther off than I'd hoped for so I've yet to attempt to attach. The bottom forward corner is at least 1/4" off the tank. Have you fit these to yours? Are you pleased with the end result? How did you get them on?
MLJ
I think that four bar badge would look great on the new Bobber. I don't think they have tank badges though, just a decal or a painted "Triumph" which is a shame. The badges look way better in my opinion.
Nice looking tank badges and informative tips on fitting. Thank goodness all my bikes are ratty and tatty and that adding shiny, spangly farkles would be like trying to polish a turd or your reviews would cost me a fortune! 😊
@@gregoryjohnwilson2108 hi Greg, thanks for tip but yes I do know all about THE famous and respected Malcolm Smith. In case anyone's interested there are loads of uploads and vids about Malcolm on UA-cam. A real character.
Hi Stewart. Great video and was very useful for me. Was planning on putting these on an air cooled tank (2014 thruxton). Is the locator pin removeable? I'm assuming it won't be of use of an older tank so just wondering if I'll possibly have to just chop it off to get it to fit. Thanks, tom
Gorgeous badges, but pricey! Those contrast cut carb covers are really nice too, but as I've an '02 (T100, Centenary Edition) I have no use for them; I do have Union Jack secondary air injection plugs and a Union Jack clutch lifter cover though. Dresses it up quite nicely (they aren't Motone products though).

I just bought the T120 black in matte grey, delivery the upcoming week! I love it, but as you stated the logo doesn’t look the part. I saw three color options for the stripes logo. Which one would you advise on the matte grey T120?
An excellent video Sir. Unfortunately, the thumbs up button doesn't do justice to how much your videos are liked by us. There should have been a multiply button also along with the like button.
Stuart great explanatory video. So the whole badge is stuck on? Why would they not have re used the screw for piece of mind. As I use mine in the rain is this going to be up to the job do you think. Many thanks Stuart.
I read all comments before asking this,,, is there no risk of the heat gun heating the tank to a point of combustion??? May sound stupid but it was the first thought that came to mind. Btw, you do a really fine job of instruction on almost all of your vids; thanks for sharing.
I used a hair dryer Fred, I never advocate the use of heat guns anywhere on a bike! To answer your question though there is next to no danger of getting the fuel up to flash point this way although I wouldn't recommend any naked flames in the vicinity whilst your doing it!
Slight word of warning - I had these fitted by the dealer before picking up my brand new T100 Black in June 2018. Unfortunately whilst riding at the weekend one of these flew off my bike and almost wiped out my mate on his bike! They're not light in weight and now worried the other one will do the same and could do some serious damage to another biker or car
Removing sticky stuff: I've seen recommended the use of dental floss in conjunction with a heat gun. I removed gopro mounts using the floss without heat...…….

Can you install these on the Speedmaster ?
An easy method also is to run some fishing line under the Triumph logo, saves bending it with your fingernail.
I wouldn't advise that, it is likely to scuff the paint, and triumph paint is very difficult to compound.
Very slowly should be ok. But thinking of it I used dental floss and there was wasn’t a mark or scuff left on the paint.

take it from a guy who ran bodyshop for years. using dental floss is potentially damaging and totally unnecessary.
