    these are the best mushrooms in Northern Ontario. We are Ukrainian and called them 'popinki ' mushrooms. BUT, you must cook them - do not eat raw as they will give you some nasty stomach problems. I used to pick them with my Dad and I still look for them today. They are great in a frying pan with butter, garlic and cream - on toast. The best.

    Great video brother. Honey mushrooms are great mushrooms. I wouldn't pick this species for new foragers. Honey mushrooms will always grow from wood. Sometimes it looks like they are growing from the ground but if you dig down you will find a stick or root with the mushroom attached. They will also have white gills and spore print. The reason I would not choose this as a good starter mushroom is because of the deadly galerina. To the untrained eye this could be mistaken as a honey. I almost got caught with chicken of the woods. The tree was full of chicken but at the very base of the tree there was the poisonous jack o lantern. The two are very similar in color and if I didnt follow my Identification steps for each cut I could have brought home some bad mushrooms. I think there is value in learning what not to pick and the choice mushrooms. Happy foraging brother...... those are kick ass on a steak by the way. 🍄🇨🇦🤘

      Had a buddy pick Chantrelles here in redlake ontario and while ive tried to find them and his spot since he left he couldnt show me where and with so many diff types of mushrooms all over canada ontario and redlake itself its a skill i want to learn but people dont always be specific which can lead to disaster. Sick and tired of people only specifying Ontario or such places as though it can be found anywhere like saying on wood. okay what type of wood what does the usual spot look like and can they put two lookalikes found in the same area at the same time essentially so we can see the differences

    Something I always do is carry my mushrooms in baskets. it allows the spores to spread if they fall out and help out the forest to regrow the mycelium a bit. they're a couple bucks at thrifts stores, and great for reusing.

    • @PinetreeLine
      @PinetreeLine  3 роки тому +1

      Excellent advice and definitely heard many many times since the video posted. Unfortunately I can’t change what’s on the video but please know that any mushroom picking since then has been done with an onion type sack to allow spores to spread. Thank you. Doug

    Positively knowing mushrooms is soooo important. We just had 2 folks almost die here mistaking "Death Caps" for "Pine mushrooms". I have the deadly "Amonita Mescalis" here in my yard. One thing I do like to do is use an onion bag to carry them. That way spores can be distributed as you walk along.

    Dough, You did an awesome video here, Your friend mark is like My family and I we pick those honey mushrooms fry them freeze and pickle them as well one amazing mushroom and the ones you found are perfect age. The Deadly Galerina is the only one you gotta watch out for mainly for new comers which makes this an intermediate mushroom to pick not for beginners, but your video is awesome. I am leaving to head to my secret Hot spot this weekend for a week. Two years ago before I started to film and take so many pictures I filled a Canoe and a Pick up bed full of them and got tire of picking them so I stopped this year with the rain will have even more out so should be good times. Hi Chris here.
    Any time you pick something your not 100% sure about boil for 20 min.
    Chowe small piece and spit out. Wait 20 min if not upset stomach eat small piece (size of dice) wait 20 min if stomach is good cook with meal. Not 100% positive but better than dieing. Anything that doesn't taste great ie bitter do not eat.

    Great only one comment the mushrooms shouldn't be collected in a plastic bag. The container should be airy, best will be basket.

    I've never heard of pickled mushrooms before. My wife loves mushrooms but my knowledge of them would have us deathly ill. I do know the shrooms around us are poisonous so I just leave them all alone. I'm sure there's many of us that would like to have Marc's knowledge.

    One thing I'm not confident to participate in is fungi, except ordinary field mushrooms.
    Picking the mushroom wont harm it though the mushroom is just the sexual part of it, chances are most of those picked are from the same mycelium. Stupidly I know how it all works, never bothered learning about the 'fruit'. (studied horticulture before firefighting)

    Least you specify subury ontario. Im sick and tired of so many videos saying ontario or canada without specifying what part as if it can be found everywhere here. Not only is it wrong it makes trying to find these things to learn more harder and makes a person want to give up

      I hear you Joe and I wanted to make sure that people are aware of what kind of mushroom we were picking and where. Like you said, It’s hard enough as it is and absolutely necessary to make sure friends are picking the right type mushroom, as there are so many different edible & non-edible mushrooms all over Ontario. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to share your thoughts my friend. Doug
