  • Ange Postecoglou was clearly furious after Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, a game in which afterward he claimed the foundations of the club are 'fragile'.
But what made him so upset after the loss, despite it being one of Spurs’ better performances in recent months?

Hilarious to see Charlie and Jack trying to build the narrative that Ange’s reaction was weird and the fans were fine. The guy was literally being shouted at by a *fan of their own team* to throw the game. Any serious manager would be livid at the state of the fanbase’s behaviour.

There’s no comparison between Ange’s vs Conte’s comments. Ange was justifiably shocked that a large chunk of Spurs fans were more interested in undermining the club rather than helping them win. Ange is ambitious and he won’t stick around if he doesn’t get the support he needs.

comparable in that they were calling out the culture of the club but ya with entirely different motivations. Conte was looking for an out the entire 2nd season. The football was antiquated and miserable, and he didn't want to fix anything, he just wanted out. I think the leadership was already looking ahead, having taken their last hail Mary at a big name coach and world class striker being enough to win titles. Despite the rant, I think Ange is still very much believed in and backed by Levy and the new staff, and wants to and believes he can bring success to the club. Totally different trajectory than when Conte popped off. But. hey, we'll see in year 2.

He can't be dense enough to not understand the circumstances at play. Even if Spurs won their fate wasn't in their hands, that's on him & the players, so of course the fans were going to be conflicted. This isn't a unique thing, I remember Arsenal fans in huge numbers before playing us in the 2019 Europa Final claiming they'd rather lose that match if it meant Spurs didn't win the Champions League Final.
I'd also suggest if he's as ambitious as he seems to be, he might want to tread carefully & not unnecessarily annoy Spurs fans. He's not exactly a hot commodity & he's lucky he got that job in the first place, ironically he's only there because Spurs' priority was to move away from the so-called "winning mentality" managers.

I reckon one of the biggest gripes for Ange was the Paddy Power advert. Seeing Spurs legends such as Hoddle, Sheringham and Anderton turning their back on his club and saying they're Man City fans and hoping they win the title at the expense of Arsenal. If ex-players are happy to do that, then yes, this does go deeper than a few fans and ex-players are the foundation of the club. He probably thinks they should be rallying around their own club and pushing in the same direction, not embarrassing the club to make a few quid on the side.

Ange was not talking about the Arsenal issue when saying the club was fragile.
The fragility he was talking about was all the bed wetting when Spurs lost a few games in a row, in the context of building a winning system and team - and everyone insisting on Plan B.
Apparently wanting plan B is in the fans , the club and staff.
This is what he meant when saying he had misread the situation.
The commentators and podders have not figured Ange out..
Listen to what he has been saying in the the last few pressers recently -
"I will die on a hill this approach".
Ange does not believe Plan B will help him much with Plan A.
Ange does not believe playing Van der Ven at left back will make him the best centre back in the world.
Ange does not believe playing without inverted full backs allows the team to practice the system.
Ange believes that the team need to practice the system against the best, every time, to learn how to do it properly!
No it wasn't a rant, he was just surprised people don't get his approach.
Celtic fans got it - they went toe to toe with Real madrid and weren't worried about losing, but focused on the teams growth.
    Silly commentators.
Sorry guys, you are just wrong on Ange!

Celtic get slapped up every year in Europe & are only any good in the Mickey mouse SPL which they have dominated for the last 12 years & only losing 1 title to Rangers in this time, what they did in a one off game against Real Madrid who probably were having an off day is irrelevant. A blow up doll could win the treble with Celtic in Scotland, when was the last time Celtic got past the group stage in the UCL? The old firm clubs are made up of mid range championship players & play in a league of absolute dross,so Ange has won a couple of kangaroo cups in Aus & the Hi karate challenge cup in Japan,so what! There is no guarantees in football but the City game showed he had learned that u need a plan B. Later than most would have liked yeah, but Arteta only addept to that experience this season after teams figuring them out at the tail end of last year.
Unless you're Pep or seemingly Alonso there are going to be sticky periods where trust is required. At the end of the day this season will be Spurs second best behind the 21/22 season in the last 5 seasons. And that is without Kane a generational talent. It's no promise for a better next year especially as without Champions League. It will be harder to get the player that improve the team, but Arsenal did it, so who knows? 🤷‍♂️

The atmosphere was not fine, because it was entirely uncharacteristic of Spurs fans. The game felt like a City game or a tennis match. Given the circumstances of the season, a game so important, fighting for top 4, low moment for Spurs against the best team in the league you expect the fans to bring energy. They didn’t directly cheer City on, or kicked the opposing team goalkeeper but didn’t exactly showed they care.

Charlie and Jack dancing around the problem here questioning the way Ange communicated his frustration. Giving a bland answer to appease most of the fans would just kick the issue down the road.
Obviously schadenfreude is a big part of fan culture but for the atmosphere to be subdued in an important game because of it shows a lot. Ange has said the atmosphere in other games gave the team momentum to get good results. To see the fanbase and maybe staff not fully aligned is harmful to creating winning culture. Especially in the first year when it's most delicate.
Spurs have sat in a comfortable position in terms of pressure for too long. Conte alluded to this. If they (half) challenge for the title or get top 4 they've over achieved and get praise from media. If they come 5th or 6th they can say "we can't compete with bigger clubs".
Ange sees the club's potential to do more and shouldn't pander to others who don't have the same conviction.

The past 8wks have been a really good insight to the myth that Spurs are a big club. The whole place was transfixed on getting into 4th, until that came into conflict with their rival winning the title. It's hilarious watching Spurs fans say he doesn't get it and he's out of his depth. Everywhere he's coached, either club or national level he's won. Spurs have won close to zero in 60+yrs. They have a big stadium and make a lot of money. But they don't win anything. Leicester have won more in the premier league era and have spent close to a decade of that in the championship. The only team that outperformed Spurs this season was Villa. No one in their right mind could have looked at a fairly average Spurs list, with little experience and then lose Kane and say this is a team that should be in the top 4.
This team celebrates things that successful teams barely flinch about.

They fill a 60,000+ seater stadium every week and the infrastructure to go with it, have the 8th highest revenue in world football, huge global fan base, and are in Europe almost every season, usually the Champions League in recent years. Trophy wise we are also the 6th most successful, and would be 4th if it wasn't for the City and Chelsea dodgy investments. The reason we didn't get fourth is because as soon as Anges basic tactics got unpicked by every other manager he didn't adapt and close down the holes that were being exploited every week, or every have a plan b. Thats why after the first 10 games, the next 28 would have left us 11th. Classic example was the set-piece debacle, where every game we were conceding goal after goal because of the outdated zonal marking he was using....it took him 2 months to fix that. • @leesmusic1
      @leesmusic1 8 днів тому

@@irvincindrak1236 ok. So Arsenal, yeah, we conceded 2 set piece goals because Ange didn’t think it was a priority to defend set pieces, so took 2 months to fix the problem of using zonal marking despite conceded set piece after set piece. So essentially we probably lost that game because of him although we only started playing when we had already lost and Arsenal took their foot off the gas. The city game is when after 37 games he suddenly worked out that maybe you be a bit more pragmatic against top teams and actually drop back a few yards, and that after 5 months he worked out that playing a 30m defender wanted by Bayern in Dragusin, was a better call than using Davis or Royale. We still lost but we played better, however even in that game Walker constantly kept getting in with acres of space because VDV was inverting, and again a competent manager would have at least fixed that at half time and told him to stay on the left, but not Ange, so the same thing kept happening second half. Listen, I want to be wrong, I hope the players are right and we are brilliant next year. Unfortunately the eye test and evidence is telling me this is an incompetent manager who doesn’t fix issues, isn’t pragmatic and has no plan b. While no Spurs fan will deny Levy's prowess in improving the club's financial aspect, over the past 24 years, we've been inundated with promises, yet all we have to show for it is one league cup. Despite hiring many good and great managers, we fail to provide them with the necessary tools for success. The departure of our top players due to Levy's lack of ambition has been deeply disheartening. Our spirit and mentality have been completely shattered.

This just gave extra ammunition to rival fans who already mock us because of the lack of trophies. He shot himself in the foot with this one. COYS

He doesn’t care about top 4 as you don’t get a trophy for 4th, you get one for winning. It’s not that he doesn’t care about where he finishes - he wants to win. He has said he is disappointed where we finished but agreed that we have performed where we are at the moment. If you have a mentality that 4th is okay, you will get 4th and nothing more. Absolutely do NOT agree with CE and JPB on abolishing VAR. Calls that were outrageously missed will GREATLY increase - compared to relatively small number of VAR travesties. VAR needs a serious revamping there is no doubt to speed up its work. But to sacrifice it for the almighty 'flow of the game' is to bow to an ancient artifact that sometimes must be sacrificed for getting calls correct. American football, basketball and hockey have been living with this for decades. Yes, it's a bit of pain to have to wait for a final disposition sometimes but overall fans accept it for a more fair result. ...I just can't get that Maradona 'hand of god' goal out of my mind - all these years later. Would NEVER have happened with a good VAR system.

However, they cheer them on to victory then they're ultimate 'Spursy' and a laughing stock because they hand Arsenal the title. I didn't cheer on City, and I disagree with any Spurs fan who actively did cheer, but I was not as upset at the loss because it had that positive tinge of affecting our biggest rivals joy, still not happy though. I asked the Arsenal fans I play football with if the roles were reversed would they want to win to hand Spurs the title and they all said they would not want Arsenal to win, so I think it's easy for people to say "Small club mentality" when they don't have to face that reality.

Fraud and out of a depth.. I will not look at games until he leaves. Why didn’t he get this mad at the ridiculous lack of defence in the last 6 games FOH!1

We didn't need another Conte type outburst. If I was paying a guy millions of pounds to coach a football team I wouldn't expect him to publicly embarrass the club.

He has no right to change the ‘fragile’ foundations as this is a rivalry which is bigger than him. There is no reason to change these foundations - because they are part of *football* never mind tottenham. Every other fan would also feel conflicted in the same position with their derby rival. This is part of the theatre of football, the tribal nature is part of why we love the game and 40,50, 60 years of pain and joy have been lived by some of the fans of which some involve this rivalry. Ange Postecoglu has no right to belittle this let alone try and change it, just as he wouldn’t at any other club. There’s nothing ballsy about speaking the way he has - in fact it’s cheap and small time to be throwing your own fans under the bus to try and earn brownie points with the public. I actually think *he* is the one who needs to grow up, or manage in a country who’s football is sanitised.

Stay a loser your whole life. Ange will move on to a team with supporters who love to win, no matter what the game.

The offside rule & procedures need to be adapted to VAR
    1. Base it on foot position only.
Almost all offside decisions could be sped up by locking offside to boot position. No need to draw lines. Players gain the advantage by using their feet anyway, not their backside or shoulder. Part of the delay in VAR is due to the VAR refs deciding which part of the body is furthest back/forward. Nonsense. Simplify it.
    2. Have the offside decision immediately be shown on the in ground screen
Do not add yet more waiting time by communicating with the ref, which, in a loud ground can be difficult. Instead, a big red flashing "OFFSIDE" should be beamed straight to the screen.
This would be on top of as much automation & AI involvement as is possible. We should be able to get to a place like before VAR where you would now and then be celebrating a goal only to realise the lino has his flag up a few seconds in. The main problem with VAR is how it can kill celebrations. I don't mind if some decisions are wrong, there are less wrong decisions. It is the dampening of goals that is the issue. Everything should be streamlined to avert this.
I would even go as far as making it the law that all players had to wear kit-based coloured boots. eg. Arsenal home kit = red boots for all Arsenal players. City in home kit = blue boots etc. if it helped with automating it, but I think players would have something to say about that with all the boot deals etc.
We can't go back to offsides as they were.
