I also opted out of a party... cause I had a bad feeling. Said party got busted. I have always got weird feelings before cops would show up. I had that feeling that night and boom, it got busted. Luckily no one went to jail cause the underage kids hid pretty well. This was a few years ago btw.

When I was in the army I was really into this girl in my unit during AIT. We went off base on the weekend and had a few drinks, she invited me out for more fun but I decided to hang out with my other friends instead. Good thing I did. The following Monday I didn't see her in formation. Apparently she snuck off with some other dude and had sex in the Alamo and got caught by the police. Fast forward... I wasn't the one who opted out, but I'll tell the story anyway.
On the last week of February, some of my year group was set to go on a skiing trip to Italy.
My chemistry teacher was one of the teachers who was set to go to Italy, but she had to opt out because she lost her passport a couple days before departure.
Cue to the day of departure, most people are gone to Italy, and the teacher said to us during class that morning that she was glad to have lost her passport, because there was a massive spike in corona cases in Italy literally on the night the skiing people were due to leave. Also, some people got injured/nearly injured, so there's that.
Thankfully, no one got the virus during the trip, but there was a bit of controversy in the school and local area, because parents were concerned for their kids (and some pulled their kids from going on said ski trip). Some people decided not to come into school when the skiing people came back, because of virus fears.

There was a shooting at the Ft. Lauderdale airport on the day, in the same terminal, at the same time as I was intially scheduled to land back in after my Winter Break. I delayed my flight a single day just a week before the flight. I can't exactly remember what prompted me to do this but I think it was about my ride to the airports availability. I remember being super bummed about it but still this day I'm grateful that I postponed it.

Had a similar thing happen to the aerosol can once: our scout group had a big event with a bunch of others. Some us merit badge assistant counselors gathered around a campfire to discuss things. One guy came by and talked for a bit, holding this empty bug spray can in his hands. We were telling stories about random things that had happened in past events, and got to a similar subject. The guys jokes that it would be hilarious to drop the can in, and we all laugh, saying he shouldn't. He shrugs, waits a moment, and then goes "what the heck", and tosses it in.
The fire was roaring. No one thought to reach in and grab it - we sat there staring at the fire pit before every one scattered. The chairs and benches around looked like a stampede went through, and we about 30 feet away for about a minute waiting to see what would happen. One of the Scout Masters came by to see what was going on... just as the can blew up.

In high school, whenever I was done working my after school job, I'd walk across town and meet my father at the local gas station for a ride home. On this day, halfway there, I ran into a kid a year younger than me heading in the same general direction. We walked about three blocks together. The kid told me he was going over to a mutual friend's to see his new hunting rifle, and asked if I wanted to come. I declined, as I was on a pretty tight schedule. We parted ways . . . I told him I'd see him at school tomorrow.
Five minutes later, he was dead, killed by an accidental firearm discharge.

My high school psychology teacher's wife could've been one of Ted Bundy's victims. Back in the 70's she was on her way to a date with her boyfriend (my teacher, who is now her husband). Ted came up to her as she was walking through the city, and asked her out. She said "no", but he kept insisting that they go out for coffee, then a hike in the woods. She declined politely, and said she was currently on her way to a date. After pleading and being denied a few more times, he eventually gave up and walked away. A few days later he was all over the news with reports of his crimes. She said she almost considered going with him because of how cute and charming he was, but she thought it was odd with how insistent he was and she also wanted to be faithful to her boyfriend.

I opted out of a trip to the mall.
My mother and I used to make the trip to the American Red Cross across the street from a popular shopping mall so she could give platelets. The process took an hour or two, and I would venture through the mall on my lonesome, doing a bit of window shopping and maybe grabbing a bite to eat if I had the money.
One day, it was incredibly cold outside, just enough to flurry. The air was dry, and before we even left the house, I had a nose bleed. Noss bleeds, for me, were a long affair. They usually brought on headaches, shakes, and feverish sensations. I told my mom that I'd like to stay home that day, and she said okay, and went off by herself.
It wasn't long after she left before the flurry started. At best, it'd been about an hour. Then, my sister came rushing up the stairs, asking if my mom was still out giving platelets. I said yes. My sister turned on the TV.
*There had been a shooting at the shopping mall. Two employees of a relatively popular skateboard/clothing shop lost their lives, having been attacked and killed by a mentally ill shooter, before he turned the gun on himself.*
My sister and I immediately called my mother. We watched on TV, the blurry feed from a helicopter circling the area. To our collective relief, my mother was okay. Stuck in traffic, as authorities were restricting access to the mall and surrounding areas, but okay. She came home without so much as a scratch.
Details would come out over the course of the next three weeks or so. The gunman's name, the victims, the state of the store.
A nosebleed most likely saved my life, that day. My story didn't seem to compare to others when I shared it-- some knew the victims personally, others the gunman. Others, still, had been inside the mall when the shots were fired.
It still makes me think, every once in a while, though, the kind of luck I might have had. I'm glad to be here, sure, I'm glad my mother, my friends, and classmates are all okay, but...
I still think about if anything could have been different. Anything at all.
If someone could have been saved, if someone would have died.

That bone marrow transplant one hit home. Had one myself for AML after I relapsed. 30/70 5 year outlook not in my favor. 4 years later and other than some heart problems from the chemo and earlier onset of male patter baldness you cant even tell. My transplant was only a 50% match due to my donor being my father. It was pretty incredible how they do the transplants now days its usually all stem cells so the donor doesn't even have to get a marrow biopsy or get marrow pulled unless they cant hit the stem cell count they want. I have been really lucky I had no acute rejection and have not yet seen signs of chronic rejection. Ironically now I work in the nuclear industry which has given me an appreciation for how much dose they gave me in the radiation treatments. 13 Gy /13 Sv/ 1300 Rem if anyone is interested in that. TL;DR: I opted out of an opportunity for a dream job, turned out too good to be true, dodged a major bullet.
A while back I studied audio engineering, learning about recording in a studio and on film sets, amongst other things. While nearing the end of my studies, I volunteered to do some work as a boom operator and sound recordist on a few student projects. In the end my work was praised enough that it got me jobs for the next 2-3 years after studies. It was fun and all, but nowhere near enough to maintain a stable income, so I turned to other professions while I fine-tuned my audio skill set, primarily IT. I got a job as an IT technician at my local academy, and although the pay was three times lower than what I would earn in the private sector, it gave me tons of experience in every part of the job, ranging from replacing toner in printers to rebuilding and deploying servers, the team was awesome and if I had free time I was allowed to occupy myself with whatever I wanted (I learned programming in my free time). It's a job that I still value and love doing. On weekends, I also began organising a Saturday roller disco which was great for my audio portfolio as I used my own lighting and audio gear, and it was great fun. All in all, I was pretty well situated professionally and I was earning enough to get by and save up.
One day, one of the directors I worked with on a few projects in the past called me up with a job opportunity. He said that there was a new internet TV station startup going on further up north and they're looking for staff. The director recommended me for the role of supervisor audio engineer and head of the audio department. Now, this is 3 years after I finished uni and my audio jobs have run quite dry with nothing going on for a few months. On paper, this is a golden opportunity; starting at a high position, able to make a name for myself, and if going well I'm basically set for life. I've considered working for the BBC a few times and this seemed like a good step up to make it.
The caveat was I'd have to leave both jobs I have and move up north. Normally I wouldn't be too worried, however my family are not well off. Everything I'd worked up to I did myself with no financial support from my family. I don't blame them, we were in a difficult situation and we did the best we could, but ultimately I had no safety net. I payed over half of the rent and utilities bills, so if I went out of work we'd be in deep trouble.
I spent a week considering the pros and cons, the risks and any backup plans. Ultimately I refused the position saying that I greatly appreciate the opportunity and thoughtfulness, but with my current financial situation it's too much of a risk. I wished him well and that was that for a while.
About a month later I messaged the director checking how he's getting on with his new job. Turns out the guy hiring him was an a**hole, they did three weeks of work for him and after refusing to pay them, he skipped town and disappeared. My friend was out of £2000 in unpaid earnings and a bunch more for renting a place. Turns out my friend pulled in other people from past projects and they were all screwed over like this. He filed a lawsuit against the guy, but apparently he never showed up in court. So my friend is out of a couple grand, and I dodged a major bullet because if I followed suite I'd be out of a job, with no savings, in a different county, having quit on two jobs I liked. He's still recovering from this blow. Luckily his family are well off so he has a roof over his head and some savings.

My ex and I planned on going back up to New England and, among other things would see Boston, and all the historical sites and museum, as well as the Marathon. I repeatedly told him that I wanted to be at the finish line. We had the money put back, all plans made. Both of us had friends there and all ready.
On February 3 he ended up with severe gangrene in his left foot because a skin graft went bad and had septic shock to boot. Net result: complete amputated foot to metatarsal. Open so it could heal easier without holding infection in. All of the nursing care had to be done at home.
No travel of any kind. We had to stay within 5 minutes ride to the hospital. Hyperbaric treatment 6 days a week for months.
Total recovery time 5 to 8 months.
No trip. I took over total nursing care. He groused. I was greatly disappointed. But being a Christian, I know everything happens for a reason. I prayed that someday I would know why everything happened this way.
Our primary source of entertainment was TV. We watched a lot of TV and movies. We settled in for a boring year.
On CNN one day we were watching and the Boston Marathon had bombs go off at the finish line.
We would have been there. The illness that almost claimed his life ironically saved both of us.

Not everyone is going to agree with my definition of "lucky" in this context, but this is my story with religion.
I had always REALLY wanted to go to this particular Bible college; my older friends went there, I had attended a lot of youth events there, I had already taken the HS tour, filled out the application, and it was my beloved youth pastors' alma mater. It was just a matter of course that I should go too.
The summer after grade 12, my dad got laid off, we had to move to another province, and my parents suddenly couldn't afford the tuition at that particular school, but they could afford another bible school closer to our new city. I was devastated and cried for weeks, but I eventually I agreed to attend this new school.
I didn't understand it at the time, but years later, I came to see how lucky I got. The school I desperately wanted to go to was conservative and fundamentalist, ie. not very healthy in its interpretation of the reality of the outside world. ("Ahem"). The school I ended up going to was more liberal and had professors who attended ivy league universities, so it was more in a place to teach us critical thinking skills, not pat Sunday school answers to life.
The next year after that, my parents suddenly had money again to send my younger sister there, and six years later, my younger brother.
To this day, my parents and younger siblings still have their minds in kind of an epistemological vice, it seems. There are just certain issues through which they see the world through that tiny pinhole view of life, and every time I hear them speak from that filter, I am so incredibly grateful to have gotten the more broad-minded liberal education. I feel like I alone escaped my family's mental prison, just because of a couple thousand dollars worth of tuition in that one gap year in my dad's earnings.

Not me, but My Grandpa, my extra Grandma and her daughter went through something that would fit this.
They where on vacation in Thailand in 2004.
They where going to go on a boat trip along the coast, but Grandpa got sick with stomach flu the evening before, still feeling sick the morning after, he told His partner and her daughter to go on the boat trip without him.
On the way to the boat, they decided to opt out and head back to the hotel as it wouldn't feel right to go on the trip without Grandpa.
Like an hour later, The Tsunami warning comes. Had they gone on the boat trip, they would have been out in the sea as it hit. They lived because of their choice to not go on the trip without him.

I’m still a “feminist” in the sense that I think that there is still a need for more woman support and still some unbalances and expectations like having kids and career choices and all that which frankly goes both ways gender wise. (Dont mind my lacklustre phrasing) . But holy shit am I happy I got off the whole feminist train. It’s toxic, so so so so so so so so toxic. I wish it wasn’t as bad as it is, it gives feminism a bad name, and now everyone who sees the word just cringes.

I believe it. My mom and many high-school classmates of mine were the same way, in part because they’d borne the brunt of sexist (and various other) prejudices and obstacles, both overt and institutional, for most of their lives. Don’t get me wrong, women (especially here in the U.S.) have a long and sordid history of getting the short end of the stick in terms of rights and privileges, and there’s still a fair bit of work to do before such true equity can be achieved. But idiots like those at M.S.N.B.C. hectoring and belittling those who disagree with them in the same way Fox News does from the opposite end of the political spectrum ain’t gonna make it happen, and neither are politicians trying to be fiery and provocative for the sake of riling up a voter base every 4 to 6 years. It also doesn’t help in my case that I fall into a demographic (bigender/non-binary) that both sides like to pretend doesn’t exist for the sake of bolstering their arguments. :(

Haha I never thought I'd have a story (This isn't horribly wrong as in a death or arrest but yk..)
Our 8th grade class was set to be going to a science facility (Argon or something? It's in Illinois). Our teachers were hyping it up and I was having none of it. I claimed how boring it sounded and said I didn't want to go. Principal tried to pressure me into going, saying things like "You'll be in the office during the classes that would he empty!" I said nah g yall can do that and he let me stay at the school (after a call to my parents ofc). Class goes on this field trip and get back for the last class of the day. Im walking by the lockers to my last class because i got to go to it and my buddy walks next to me and passed me his vape all shaky saying kids got popped, hide this etc. I said aight (cus I'm associated with the crowd of crippling nic addicted teens) and hid it in my bag.
Whole story of the trip from my friend, it was super boring, scientists talked to them like preschoolers and no one felt like speaking up that their spiel was basic and meant for younger kids. Glad i missed on that, but where the meat of this story is lies on the bus back after the trip. Kids like my buddy (who walked up to me earlier) were in the back doing their thing trying to be on the low. I've heard multiple versions of the following, "He took a hit and coughed it out and it went everywhere", and " He blew it into a bag and someone crushed it and smoke went everywhere". Everyone in the back 3 rows of the bus got detentions, regardless of if they participated or not which idk how parents of squares took that. Ik I woulda been back there so it's a bullet dodged imo.
