I was 17, we unfortunately missed the Manly ferry to get to see these fireworks but ended up seeing a tiny fireworks display in Manly instead! Different world back then, no phones like now with a camera and video. Take me back
I have a small copy of Arthur Stace's Eternity script in our car's back window as a silent reminder to myself and people close behind that we will all face eternity one day.
Certainly the touches of personality that were in these fireworks were missing from the 2020 fireworks... a mix of music both classical and popular, the big smiley face, eternity, and of course the crowds. At least a few items could be improved for 2021!
As night fell on 31 December 1999, five million Sydneysiders looked forward to hours of splendid celebration. It was the eve of the twenty-first century; the eve of the third millennium. A feast of live entertainment was planned, much of it on Sydney’s majestic, incomparable harbour. An estimated one million people clustered on the foreshores, residents and tourists alike. Others took to the water in boats of all kinds. There had not been a scene like this since the Bicentennial festivities of Australia Day 1988. Countless lights sparkled and shone, in many colours of the rainbow; the water rippled; stars of the Australian music industry performed at harbourside venues. The highlight was a performance in the Opera House forecourt of Icehouse’s classic song ‘Great Southern Land.’ It was reworked and expanded for the occasion by its composer, Iva Davies, as part of a colossal 25-minute work, ‘Ghost of Time.’ The musicians took their final bows a few minutes before midnight. By now, literally billions of people were watching on television, their attention fixed on Australia’s premier city. The first of January 2000 would arrive in Sydney before dawning in any other comparable city on Earth. At ten seconds to midnight the countdown began. Then, as the new millennium arrived, there came a massive fireworks display - perhaps the most spectacular ever seen in Australia - that lasted 24 minutes. The focal points were Sydney’s two matchless icons of engineering: the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. At the end, a fiery cascade erupted downwards from the Bridge’s deck. The bells of a dozen churches pealed loudly. And then, as the smoke cleared, it came into view - emblazoned in gold letters just below the apex of the Bridge’s towering arch. The first written word of the third millennium, in distinctive copperplate script: "Eternity" The crowds cheered with gusto. This was a word deeply and affectionately associated with the history of Sydney - and with one man in particular. A man who wrote ‘eternity’ around the streets of Sydney. He did it using chalk or crayon every day for almost 35 years, perhaps half a million times in all. His name was Arthur Malcolm Stace. He had died 32 years before, but was far from forgotten.
People claiming that 2000 is was the new millennium and the 21st century but in reality, 2001 is the new millennium, the beginning of the 21st century and the beginning of the decade.
A lot of people bring this up, and it is correct. It's actually brought up every year. Let's not forget, if we want to get serious about it, that we also have daylight saving time, so the millennium actually started at 1am, January 1st, 2001. But for the average person in the street, when the clock struck midnight on January 1st 2000 was when "the date went all funny". I think that's what was meaningful to most people, and it's what counts.
I remember this. I was 36 years old at the time and was attending a paddock party in Rosegarland, Tasmania. I was 2/3s of the way to being shitfaced drunk and it was absolutely freezing cold (1°C or 2°C) even with the bonfire roaring. A few there that night no longer with us, Wimmo, Stocksy, Bung, Maree and Jocks. Fun times.
tbh Sydney pretty much started the NYE fireworks displays....from 2000 onwards cities around the world started putting more effort into thier fireworks
webjunkie Snoopy you speak truth this year it probably be happy new year for us not for the planet there no fun there a saying they should be cancel the firework because of climate change no fun anymore

The second-best Sydney Harbour fireworks display in history, only to be beaten by the Sydney Olympics finale.
Eternity and bringing in the millennium was way bigger than the Olympics. So I'd have it the other way around!
