- In this video I get back on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and continue to crank it south. The road through Montana was steep and treacherous, but at the same time, wild and beautiful. Some of the challenges left me breathless with exhilaration, others... were more of a slog fest.
I started crossing state borders. I rode for a day and a half through Idaho (actually really beautiful), and entered Wyoming in the Grand Tetons. The Wind river Range was awesome, and the Great Basin blew me away (literally).
When I got to Colorado I met up with an old buddy, Garrett who runs the channel @MoveWithMurph . Together we rode across most of the state. We were treated to smooth, easy climbs up the highest passes on the route. Between each climb we crossed vast, open tracts of empty steppe.
As soon as we crossed into New Mexico I realized that my bottom bracket had failed and I needed to replace it. I also realized that I was getting very tired and I needed a good rest. So, in the first town, Abiquiu, I decided to take a week off and work on this video.

About the Ride:
My name is Alex van Gelder. I'm from Seattle and I'm just starting my first intercontinental bicycle tour. The goal is to ride from Deadhorse, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina in one go.
I also want to ride some bikepacking routes including the Great Divide Route through the Rocky Mountains and the Peru and Ecuador Divides through the Andes.
For this trip I built my own bike using a custom frame in order to be able to withstand rough mountain roads as well as power through long distances on pavement. (I had never built a bike before so we'll see if it holds up.)
If you have any other questions you can check out my FAQs video: • Alaska to Argentina | ...
or leave a comment and I'll get to it as soon as I can.
I'm editing these videos on the road, so releases my be infrequent as I try to find a quiet place to edit.
