Very interesting video, fascinating how religion is used by leaders to maintain power and control the populous. You should provide an in-depth review of ‘The Prince’ ;)

Thanks for watching! I did review The Prince a few years ago but since it was one of the first videos on the channel it’s not as detailed as it could be. I would like to revisit it at some point though!

Brilliantly informative, packed with great quotes and references; fascinating stuff. Really enjoyed the artwork too. Liking this new (or it seems new for you?) essayistic format James, it seems to allow you to get a lot more information in per video and formulate a thoroughly detailed argument. I’m actually going to flip to the start and watch again 🌻 thanks fella.

Interesting video James. There is a book on Italy for art: An Art Lover’s Guide to Florence and: A Literary Tour of Italy. As for religion and politics; the U. S. Is not an atheistic land. Almost all politicians are religious, and it’s hard to imagine their being a non religious leader. An American would rather take a Hindi over an atheist for a leader. As for my view in politics; it is mostly theater, all for show, in a Guy Debord sense. There have been virtuous presidents; Lincoln, Washington, however there are few morally righteous leaders. This is not partial to a party. Machiavelli’s ideas are interesting however I have not read them. Cheers, always a pleasure.

I absolutely love An Art Lover’s Guide to Florence, great book! & yes, you’re right - the US is far from atheistic - even if a politician is a closeted atheist they still operate under the pretence of belonging to a religion. I recommend Machiavelli’s The Prince, short but punchy.
      Thanks for watching 🤙

    Haven't read anything by Machiavelli.
But,my gut feeling tells me that his philosophy is suited to institutions and not individuals.

Machiavelli is well worth checking out, especially considering his “The Prince” is incredibly short. Regarding your second point, I think his philosophy can be applied on an individual level AND an institutional one. His Discourses is more contextual to institution and his Prince is catered to the individual. Hope that helps🤙

I'm thinking Machiavelli had to be careful what he said, or wrote, holding a mirror to the Church or anybody else in that circle would prove to be a death sentence.
