    Backing track for guitar in the mode/key of F Lydian. Suggested scales are the F Lydian Mode and F Pentatonic Major Scale. This jam track is at 125 bpm and is made as a play along for guitarists. Enjoy!

    Thanks for this great stuff! Play a A or D minor pentatonic or a G mixolydian scale over this and discover things you didn't know you could play. :)

      Yeah, so many scales to play over it! Lotsa fun. I found A minor pentatonic and D Dorian worked best, since f and g are both in the A minor key, and f is the relative major of dm with g being the other classic Dorian chord, so I guess f Lydian is basically d dorian in a way!

    Isnt this supposed to end on Cmaj7 since we got a dominant G7? Im self-taught on theory and i might be missing something but I think we should avoid the tritones on modal progressions

      technically yes but the way I see it, if it sounds good then who cares if it is theoretically correct? its good to understand theory but you shouldn't be always thinking about it when you play otherwise you'll start to limit yourself to things that are only theoretically correct and you'll lose what feels right. my best advise is to use your intuition when you play and as long as it sounds good, don't focus too much on the theory. only when theres a problem you should worry about the theory

      Since it's a modal Secuence, it can't end on a Cmaj7. The general idea is to feel you r on F Lydian, so if you go to Cmaj7, the Center moves to C.

      If you resolve the G7 to Cmaj7, then it is not modal Lydian, that is just C Ionian.
      Tbh the best way to get the modal sound is to have a pedal tone, in this case F, and play the primary chords that differentiate it from Ionian, since Lydian is a major mode (and those two chords should and will have the notes that form a tritone in the scale, giving it the particular modal sound).
      The half steps make the modes.
      E.g., all from Cmajor:
      Locrian:
      -Bmin7b5
      im7b5, one minor 7 flat 5, will give you the Locrian sound, since it has B (root) and F(flat5);in it. No 7th chord in Cmajor has B as the root and F as the flat 5 except Bm7b5, uniquely describing the tonality.
      Aeolian:
      -Am9 Gmaj Fmaj
      (Or Am9b13 for one single chord, B is the 9th, F is the b13)
      im9 bVII bVI, one minor, flat seven major, flat 6 major, no other major scale mode minor scale has those chords on those degrees.
      Mixolydian:
      G7 F/G
      I7 bVII
      (One chord that has the B and F notes is G7)
      I major, flat seven major.
      Unfortunately, this is identical to Lydian F and G being the primary chords, so putting a G pedal or bass note will better solidify the sound. Or simply a G7 would suffice as it has the B and F notes (3rd and b7).
      Lydian:
      Fmajor G major
      (or Fmaj7#11 for one chord, F is the root, B is the #4/#11l
      I II, major I, major II. With an F pedal will give a solid Lydian modal backing.
      Phrygian:
      -Emin Fmaj
      (or Em7b9 for one chord, but it is very dissonant and rarely used. The i bII vamp is an easy way to get the sound. F is the b2, B is the 5th)
      i bII, minor i flat II major, will give you the Phrygian sound
      Dorian:
      Dm Gmaj
      (One chord would be Dm6 or Dm13, since it has F, the third, and B, the 6th/13th)
      i IV, minor one major IV, will give you a Dorian vamp
      Ionian:
      Cmajor G7
      (Or one chord is Cmaj11, but that is also rarely used. B is the 7th, and F is the 4th/11th)
