10:26 is very important as Dean states! My Ibiza Cupra 1.4 tsi twincharge engine had to get rebuilt after I blew one of the pistons, (common fault in the cave engines) and during the engine rebuild process the mechanic put one of my con rod caps wrong way and after 400 miles later on the new rebuilt engine my car starting knocking again. Absolutely gutted. Dean I wish I brought my car to you man I’m actually so gutted. Had to be sold for spares or repairs 😢

could be a trick of the camera but the honing looked as it it was done with course stones. I think machine shops use sussessively finer grades of stones to give a fine cross hatch finish. Maybe I'm nit picking and it will run for 100K miles!

Great video Dean, the insight into how these VAG TFSI engines are built is fascinating. The incident with the camshaft is a great tip for anyone rebuilding their engine. I must admit I have always fancied an Audi TT, but never got round to getting hold of one at the right money! Hope everything goes well with the restart. 🤞

  • @eddwalch-homecraftproperty6613

Hi Dean, I love how you just get on with each job as it appears. I think with glaze honing, you go slowly as straight in alignment with the bore as you can.
The angle is not critical but an even finish is. Spray cutting fluid down the bore and on the stones and go gently.
One further thing, look after your honing tool,
Keep it in a box so to protect the stones because they are what decides the quality of the finish.
One final question, what make of knee pads do you use, I work work in shorts all the year round but struggle to find good ones that stay up when you walk and yours look decent.

Before I first remove the exhaust cam, I like to take my palms and hit the ends of each side of the cam. This essentially slides the adjustable lobes to the left and right, centering the lobes. But being that it is laying in the head still, you can’t slide them to far, and the ball and spring don’t go flying. This action lets me drop the cam directly back in when it’s time for re-assembly.

Hey Dean, cheers as always for the video 👍
Top tip - don’t wear gloves when dealing with bearings and re-assembly of parts such as the big ends (or anything with equally tight tolerances); as demonstrated nicely at 09:16, it’s easy to accidentally loose tiny little bits of glove in the wrong place and not notice. Most of the time you’ll probably be alright, but it’s not worth the potential risk. You can also get much better feel of how well those crucial parts are fitting together. Yes it’s more of a faff to clean your hands in between, but defo worth it.
The bores defo do look better at 10:59; it’s difficult to pass judgement without being there. Personally for something as critical as that I’d get a machine shop to do it so you know it’s right, for the minimal extra cost.
Hope it all comes together nicely mate 👍

    • @georgedaville4662

      @@georgedaville4662
True, but for the tiny amount of extra for a few gaskets and crush washers, personally speaking I’d rather go that extra mile when you’re already that deep into it.
I’m just about into double figures for engines I’ve rebuilt, and I’d still much rather get that sort of thing done professionally as opposed the chance I may/may not do a decent job myself.
      Personal preference I guess.
      Cheers

is worth spending a little more and getting the ball honing tool with little balls on it, makes such a nicer finish

Just a quick question it could be my eyes lol, @ 13:16 looks like you put sealer on the sides of the upper sump, but the picture on you’re laptop screen shows to put sealer on sides and one end maybe ? Hopefully is all alright, I’m hooked on you’re channel recently mate keep it up !

      @SavingSalvage Рік тому +1

Yeah, the diagram was for the cam chain cover already fitted. Which is what that extra bit on the side is for. As I didn’t fit it until after I put the sealant on then

That gudgeon pin went into place remarkably easy. On other vehicles ( old) I've had to soak the piston in hot water in order to insert the pin.

It wasn’t that easy, had to get it bang central, also they shouldn’t be that tight as they need a coat of oil round it permanently when running.

I did a sr20 rebuild a few years back. I placed the pins in the freezer overnight (wifey didn't know haha ) they literally fell in to the piston.

Any updates on your other builds like the Porsche and TVR ? Curious to know how things are progressing with both builds 👍🏻😊

Porsche I’ve been waiting on a solution for welding it up properly, found someone but it will be next week before that’s sorted. TVR I’m
Slacking on a bit as lots of bits need to happen with that.
