Leaving aside the issue of whether prostitution should be a crime at all (I'm not very comfortable with the idea of government deciding under what conditions consenting adults should be allowed to have sex) it is an interesting point of history that our modern concept of incarceration, is fairly recent. For most of human history, society could not afford to spend $35,000 per year to keep some miscreant, housed fed and guarded. So there were, for most of history, two punishments: death, for many crimes including theft. And pain (whipping, branding, etc) for everything less agregious. Interesting to speculate what would happen if a modern robber were given the choice between, say, 5 years in prison, or being branded.

It is legal. Pandering, solicitation, and procurement, i.e., ' pimping ' are illegal. We have those laws to protect women from being forced into trafficking or being raped. Without those laws, three men could drag a woman into an alley, rape her, and when caught, claim it was just a financial transaction and demand she be arrested for cheating them because she didn't provide all of the services for which they paid. Before you laugh, that happens in many parts of the world even today. If you date a lady and decide to buy her a nice necklace, that is not a crime. If she returns the necklace to the store or sells it because she wants or needs cash, that is not a crime. Being a pimp is a crime. ;-)
Countries with most lax laws on prostitution are also the hardest to prevent and lower human/child trafficking from. I would agree that severely punishes the traffickers, pimps and johns is the best course od action, as the women are typically not there vecause they want to be. But prostitution is never good, and the studies that suggest s*x workers are in any way happy are deeplemy flawed. Most are done by college students at brothels, where women are afraid of upsetting their pimps. Nothing academically valid about these studies.
Can't buy it without sellers. Johns and Hookers need each other. In fact it is the only transaction between male and female that approaches some level of fairness.

There is no consent where prostitution is concerned. Read the testimonials of women in that industry. It's vile and deserves to be a crime.

Their "crime" was to be poor.
Their crime was actually to be immoral and a sinner who violated God's laws of sexual morality They deserved their branding
