After a career as a fisheries biologist, I started nursing school, but left midway through degree due to vaccine mandates. Started plumbing, was jackhammering a concrete slab for drainage work less than 18hrs after acing my last pathophysiology exam. No looking back, plumbing is wonderful.
I dropped out of college after my first year. I started plumbing 2 years ago not making much. Going into my third year of plumbing as an apprentice I’m making over 60k. My eldest brother is a foreman for my company and brings home 110k with no overtime. A lot of my friends who went to college or are still in are always shocked whenever they learn how much trades make. I absolutely love plumbing and I never saw myself doing it. Opportunities are endless in the trades. You may start out low but I’m making double from when I started 2 years ago.
Third year making over 60k? What area of plumbing, commerial, new construction, service? Also if you dont mind me asking what state you work in. Thanks
I’m fresh out of highschool I’m 19 years old I want to get into plumbing and start making money I really don’t know where to start and I really know absolutely nothing but I am willing to learn and grow and I know I want it more than my peers
Used to work with Graphics Design. Quit at 25 and got into plumbing apprenticeship, Im 35 now and love it, even expanded into waterjetting and watervac digging, bought a vac/jetting truck I can jet up to 600mm pipes at 200 bar. The freedom to pick jobs and how I do them with my own expertise is amazing and there is no end to work, private and city appointed.
Hey Roger, I started watching your videos two years ago and decided to give plumbing a shot. I've now been a plumbing apprentice for three months at an industrial plumbing company. However I have a question. Obviously non of us want to be around asbestos and it should be removed by specialists when possible however when working on old buildings it is everywhere. Can you do a video on awareness of asbestos for plumbing apprentices, best practices and safety recommendations? I've often seen even experienced plumbers cutting away asbestos lagging without PPE and want other apprentices to protect themselves. Thanks!
Plumbing is the single most important aspect of society in the world. Without functioning running water and sewer lines, modern civilization as we know it ceases to exist. Hence why we make the money we do. We charge a premium for a reason.
True that I miss plumbing construction so bad thinking about leaving fitter construction and trying out service plumbing even though they get paid half and I got weld certs.
My dad is a master plumber up in MN. I always admired him for all his hard work he did. I'm 31 right now, and wondering about entering in the trade. I feel like it is too late for me to look at the trades due to physical needs.
My friend, i'm turning 36 and thinking about doing the same. The way I see it - if you're not enjoying what you do and you have an "in" through your family, it might be worth looking into it ( though I don't know your physical needs as you stated). My whole mindset is that I don't want to be 50 looking back at 35 thinking "I should have done something then". Time is going to pass anyway!
No one talks about this but I love to travel I’ve taken my plumbing skills and traveled working in places not just in different states but other countries. Kinda like a traveling nurse would do. Get out if your comfortable zone and work the trade and travel.
Mr. Roger I really enjoy your videos I admire how you carry yourself and how you motivate us young people. BUT HVAC IS THE BEST TRADE (lol that’s the trade I’m in). All joke asides my fellow young people get in the trades it’s really worth it
If you can learn plumbing you can easily learn electrical. Like electricity flows in a loop you can say water flows similarly 😅 if you can learn and master both you can go anywhere in the world and find good paying work.
Thank you Roger for making these videos, I’m 20 now and about to go to San jac in Houston to study and wish I started much sooner in getting into plumbing.
I'm currently a truck driver been in the industry 16 years now and want out. I've thought about trades but not sure where to start and also worried as I'm the only income for my family.
Hey Roger, i love your content, i just have a question, ive been living to the same neighbor and his family for 11 years, our children are growning up together, we are in our 40s now, he has owned a commercial plumbing company the entire time we have been neighbors. Throughout the years he has asked me here and there that i should come work for him and be an apprentice and learn the trade. Early on i wasnt able to take him on the offer because of my wife and my schedules to balance the children and life, but im asking now if i should accept him on the offer and go to work for him. My only concern is that i dont want to go and work for him and fail at the job or mess up and if puts a hinder on our relationship, could you pleaae give me your insight. Thank you for all your videos, have a good one
Go for it, if he’s asked you multiple times you don’t know how many more he’ll ask before giving up. If you’re interested in doing it there is no downside..
This would be a much different world without the plumbing trade. I used to lighthearted tease the plumbing engineers who I worked with by pointing out that they only had to remember 1 rule...water flows downhill. Of course, I also used to tell our sprinkler engineers that they had the easiest job...plumbing that leaks. 😅
Been in plumbing for 4 years I’m gonna take my test and get my license but I think I’m gonna go into carpentry I just got no patience for plumbing anymore 😭
They will give you your experience and as long as you apply yourself and study after you get home it will all come to you and you should have no problem

Start as an apprentice, get as much experience as you can, take courses or watch videos on money management, business management, etc, as tradespeople that’s something you don’t learn and get taught enough about
My boyfriend just started a plumber apprenticeship and loves it. He is making over $800 a week and after 4 months will be getting commission. I never knew that it worked that fast.
My problem, our industry and all of the commission service companies. From a/c, electrical to plumbing. It has become a scam. They hire salesman,, not tradesman. Overselling,up selling, lying and such. I am 60 years old, disgusted where our industry has gone
I been working as a aprendis commercial plumber for almost 3 years, but the salary in Dallas tx isn't great for aprendis commercial plumber. I would keep looking for a better place to work.
I've got a bad knee, and bad everything else............I don't like going into peoples homes........can I still become a plumber..........I'm almost 40 and I need something I can make money so I can start a family.............like yesterday
Sounds like you would like commercial or new construction rather than service, not having to go into peoples homes…although you would still be doing a lot of manual labor
We're not in charge of the quality or cleanliness of water being distributed into the homes...but installing a water filtration system would help with that..
@tonea9851 Wanna be plumbers? Is that why we have so many plumbers trying to get their steam license? All you need to know in plumbing is shit rolls downhill and don't bite your fingernails. Much prefer working on boiler, gas, oil, steam than installing sinks and toilets 🤣
It will take some time....don't expect to start a career in plumbing then open a business right away...or even in a few years, you need the experience first. But opening a company is a great goal to have!
Just stared my plumbing apprenticeship and I’m loving it. Can’t wait to become a journeyman!!
You got this! What is your favorite thing about plumbing?
Same here I’m currently 1 1/2 in and having joy.

Damn Roger. You almost made me cry. I'm working as a service plumber. A servant in ones home is what satisfies me the most.

Just hit my year and a half mark as an apprentice. Best decision I ever made was to become a plumber. Keep up the good work Roger!
I'm about to hit one year. Definitely a great choice!

Got my apprentice license yesterday and I'm super excited to have taken this step towards becoming a full plumber
