What makes this even worse is that in Ancient Greece, any city-states at war with each other would cease hostilities during the games. It's such a shame that people from 2500 years ago were more civilized in that aspect than people are today.
It was meant to be an example of international human unity.
Oh please there’s a difference between city states fighting over a hill than nations with millions of people fighting for their respective sovereignty
The hellenes had a shared cultural worldview. Many modern Middle Eastern Muslims outright hate the west and everything it stands for, they don't give a fuck obout our customs.
@@theduke9292 Sovereignty? Is France trying to leave the EU?
it's a nice idea to allow for athletes to go to the games from regions of the Greek world without fear of repercussions. however it was not always enacted as it was non law abiding. Today we have a similar international law which is not clear when it starts or ends and what it enforces as it's a voluntary law. But in total the international law on this was broken by Russia In 2008 Olympics with the invasion of Georgia and in 2014 in the annexation of Crimea.
At this point, the Olympic Games seem to be more of a liability for countries rather than an honor...
they really are. The security costs have gotten _insane_ since the games have basically become the Islamic worlds favorite target while the hosting nation inevitably ends up driving out massive numbers of working class and poor people to make room for the games.

I currently live in France (Alpes region) I am also currently doing my PhD on social movements in France and have been working on creating datasets and extensively researching this exact topic, of the various social movements (from the Gilets Jaunes, pension reforms, to these riots). I saw the aftermath of the riots last summer (burnt out cars everywhere, centre ville totally ransacked, it was wild), I have a decent amount of data about it and I have seen the shift in society as a whole through my research but also just through lived experience. It is a very real issue and threat here. I am fully avoiding Paris for the olympics because of this fear of violence, but I dont need to go far to see and experience it here in my little town.
I need to bring to light certain events that have happened that you might require for your research. As of 2 days ago, there was a violent situation at the olympic football match between Argentina vs Morocco at Saint-Etienne. Also, coordinated arson attack was executed 12 hrs earlier to paralyze North, East and London trains and services of SNCF.
Its crazy here at Paris.

@@NelsonZAPTM As much as I hate Putin France is just kind of screwed in general. Just off the top of my head:
1. general problems the world is facing from COVID related economic woes

4. more of a chronic long term issue but France losing their neo-colonial empire recently is going to cause them a lot of problems. France has been afforded a great economic boost first thanks to their pre-WW2 colonial empire, then later thanks to their neo-colonial empire they had until recently with things like the CFA Franc which kept cheap resources and energy coming in from Africa while making French exports to Africa more competitive which coupled to make it a lot harder for West Africa to trade with anyone but France.

Well, the Olympic committee mocked one of the major world religions. I'm not religious, but why do that? It accomplishes NOTHING positive other than pleasing a subset of people that enjoy offending other people. Thank you
Did they plan for sloped roofs tho?
The Munich attack.God awful. I was eight.
It’s been made clear by Islamic extremists that they want to try to repeat it. Luckily, security is a lot more prepared.

I figured the Olympics had a giant bullseye on it from Macron hinting to send French forces to Ukraine.
The French were all too happy to be culturally enriched
@@dioniscaraus6124 It's funny because last elections most French people wanted to vote for a far-right movement to move out the foreign criminals back to their countries, it had more votes, but through political manipulations, the left and centrists allied themselves and barely won, and they still had less people voting for them together, but they abused the system to get elected. 7m vs 11m and the left still won. It's a fake democratic regime in France currently.

I already see it happening. And the left will still call them peaceful
Was anyone else expecting that last bit about cyber attacks to lead into a Nord VPN or Delete Me ad?
Those do make me laugh, especially since those "delete me" things are a scam. The ad companies just ignore your opt-out requests the same way spammers have a "remove me from your call/email list" option that no matter how many times you click it they never stop sending you shit. Hell some companies give the opt-out request just so they can confirm that the number/email address they have is functional and it can get you _more_ spam. Telemarketers and spammers break the law constantly because the FCC is kind of a joke, just look at the laws around do not call lists: legally they're not allowed to spam those numbers but most people I know who get on that list still get the same amount of spam calls and report it does nothing.
This is I ignore all Palestinian activism.
Oh, Muslims want sympathy? Stop the terror then.
Its almost as though blindingly importing people from questionable parts of the world and concentrating them in major keystone cities isnt a great idea. Whod have thought?
It’s not a good idea that’s the point. That’s what the French government wants. Recently one of the officials came out and said “Arabic will be the national language of France” they want to replace the French. And they want to replace the whole white Europe.
Diversity is our weakness.

What they should be concerned about is the decision to permit a drag show imitation of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony. I'm not even religious and cannot believe this was permitted.

Far right 😂😂😂😂 what a joke
The Interior Minister listing the "potential intent" of the "far-right" as a "risk" serves to highlight the utter political opportunism and corruption of the technical security analysis by the current French executive. And it's this blindness, this needless diversion of crucial policing resources, that will open the flanks to the actual greatest risks.
