It sounds like an alien creature attempting to communicate with us, and they're repeating the same phrase over and over and getting increasingly frustrated at our inability to understand, but then they collect themselves and carry on trying to communicate
Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms that gather in the darkness and surround the world with the power of their lives while from the dimlit halls of other places forms that never were and never could be writhe for the impatience of the few who never saw what could have been. In the black water with the sun shining at midnight, those fruit shall come ripe and in the darkness of that which is golden shall split open to reveal the revelation of the fatal softness in the earth. The shadows of the abyss are like the petals of a monstrous flower that shall blossom within the skull and expand the mind beyond what any man can bear, but whether it decays under the earth or above on green fields, or out to sea or in the very air, all shall come to revelation, and to revel, in the knowledge of the strangling fruit-and the hand of the sinner shall rejoice, for there is no sin in shadow or in light that the seeds of the dead cannot forgive.

I caught Annihilation when I was in the depths of the most wretched heartbreak I've ever known and I'll always be grateful for it. Need to get a sound system linked throughout my house to freak people out with this
Without having watched the movie, this actually gives me the feeling of intrigue and discovery, and none of the scary feeling that people are talking about. Anyone else feels this way?
It almost feels like coming across the wreck of a team that tried to examine something alien, then disappeared, and walking toward the anomaly.
You get a feeling of discovery, but you also have a lingering feeling that you probably shouldn’t have gone deeper
It's just the power of association. The happiest thing alive can be scary when associated with the right thoughts and memories
Is this a genre cuz I need more of this. It's the perfect sound of dread, like when you get curious about something and you realise it would have been better if you never learnt about it. I love this so much.
It's hard to classify, but the guy who made this soundtrack has made a few others that have similarly creepy songs. Check out the song "Hacking/Cutting" from the Ex Machina soundtrack
Annihilation is a book written by Jeff VanderMeer. It's part of a trilogy, and the genre is considered "Weird Lit"
As in, weird literature. Not sure what the type of music would be classified as. Maybe "weird scifi score" or "creepy scifi score"
The idea behind the "weird lit" genre is to get under your skin in a creepy way, but usually without being inherently scary or horrifying.
That's why I love Annihilation. The end of the movie depicts... Spoiler
The alien presenting itself, and it's really scary sort of, but then again it's not really scary at all. It's just alien. It didn't mean any harm.
This song was designed to make you feel dread, anxious, unsettled and uncomfortable. It does it without a problem.
You can add curious to that list as well if you ask me lol.
I have a dog with me! Now i am not scared

Same applies to other songs like the Archive 81 Kalego prayer song.
@@queenvictoria5710 I think that one makes me feel much more uneasy. This just feels cool as shit to me. Encapsulates that amorphous eye in the movie
I don't think any soundtrack, maybe even film, has ever encapsulated the true definition of what an alien is better. It is truly nothing like us - doesn't speak to us, doesn't look like us, might amuse us, might petrify us. Something so odd we don't know if we can go near it; the definition of uncertainty, anxiety and inconceivability.

Cause not everybody feels as much from music. I personally just think it sounds cool, but I also got a kinship with weird/scary things for various neurological reasons.
But don't worry, it's a very unusual noise that peaks in multiple ranges that'd be associated with very negative emotions for humans. So at least take comfort in that your monke instincts are working correctly.

The movie and this music is my kind of horror. It didn't focus on violence or murder, but the unexplainable mystery of what we don't understand. Real horror doesn't gross you out, it slowly picks at you seeing how long long and sane you can last. That's what this song does. And it's horrifying

“What he wants?”
“I don’t think he wants anything”
That concept terrifies me to the core.
And then people come to a conclusion that that line was simply saying "I don't know what it wants." And roll their eyes.
It says more than that dammit, she didn't know even if it wanted anything. The creature is more like fire than a living entity. Fire burns not because of hatred nor because it wants anything.
It simply exists and thus; does.
@@silver1340 exactly, that thing was a biological / chemical / physical process… it’s so many things and most of them we can’t comprehend
@@jakesanders136 Yes BUT it is because we know how fire works. Now think of some black fire, it spreads seemingly randomly, burns some things and not others, and what it burns keep changing all the time without any apparent reason. We don't know how to stop it. Now that's pretty scary. Next step is : this fire can turn into something that looks exactly like a human, the imitation is almost perfect, it can even speak. And it goes on to spread more and more, using his human appearance to go through our vigilance ...
In a sense, it is truly alien, because it's alive in a whole different way than we are. It might be more of an ongoing cycle than life in the sense that we know it as. An extremely advanced process, that thinks but not intentionally.
I believe "intentions" are our very own human way to express our perception of the chemicals reactions that animate us. We believe to be different than fire because what we feel seems different to us, tho i believe it is not by any mean.
I just heard this in Atomic Heart and was like OMG! I know that soundtrack! Lol
Whenever I see someone who is suspicious, this soundtrack comes to mind.
The 4 notes in the music that sounds "beep boop beep boop" is a set of notes called the 'dies irae'.
We've been associating those notes with 'death' for hundreds of years. It was set of notes created by the gregorian catholic church to be played at funerals. If you pay enough attention, you can hear these 4 notes in every movie's soundtrack. Making the scene feels more grim. Example : mufasa's death in Lion King. You can hear the notes in the soundtrack.
yes but the design of the sound here is incredible, it sounds so otherworldly and metallic, i cant explain why but i love it
It doesn’t even sound grim, more like meeting a power that is so unmatched so great (whether good or bad) that you’re just speechless but at the same time having some kind of realization.

That bee boo bee boop thing always scared the shit out of me... That grand and mysterious vibration orchestrating this esoteric chill down your spine...It really fits the mood. Whoever created this soundtrack deserves more!
Gekyume I agree
Ikr, that Spongebob song scared the piss out of me.
no man your thinking of boo beep boo bap
one of the composers is from a band called Portishead, the bee boop thing sounds like something they would play on their third album
@@sLePpInG I knew I had heard this way of composing music before! The movie's a jumbled mess (intentionally), but the soundtrack is certainly memorable and really made some scenes incredible.
Still a pretty confusing film, even if you understand the metaphors and intent of the film.
I heard this play during the limbo segments in Atomic Heart. Did Mundfish ever get the rights to use this song? If not, then I smell a lawsuit coming up in the near future.
The song is just like any other organism in annihilation. Music cast through a prism, scattered, changed into something familiar, yet not at all what it used to be. Like an alien imitating music. Just like the alien imitated Lena.
I think part of why this is so good is that the rest of the soundtrack has lots of acoustic elements up until this part, and then, at the center, things become completely alien, and the soundtrack reflects that.
good analysis!
Yes this puts it in a new view

Most underrated movie ever.
I think someone else already said that, but I have to share my observation here. Notice, how in the beginning of the movie, when the comet is shown flying towards Earth, we hear guitar music, something well known to us. It sounds, let's say, "normal". Yet, when the story progresses, you can hear some synths thrown around, instruments, that are rather associated with aliens and unknown things. At the end, of course, the music; which is playing, when Lena gets to the lighthouse and meets the alien, the music is completly made of synths and ambient hum. This gives a next layer of immersion, where the Shimmer shifts and transforms even the music. I gotta say, this movie is an underrated masterpiece. It's a shame, that not that much people know about it.
You just sold the movie to me. Bravo. This comment section is so good
Have you read the trilogy? I honestly can't watch the movie, it falls so short of the cosmic horror so exquisitely captured in the book.
this was so spot on-
@@allthingsdestructive
Cosmic horror is by definition impossible to fully capturate in a movie. That Is beacouse in a book, most of the horror is created by your own immagination trying to visualize what you are reading.
In a movie there is nothing to imagine beacouse it it directly showed to you.
That negates the fear of the unknown.
So no movie will EVER be able to capture the fear of the unknown, the only thing that comes close is a movie that shows a dark place where you can't see anything in it, beacouse again, the movie ISN'T showing you anything, so you are left wandering what might come out of the darkness, but if something does eventually comes out, it will never be as scary as what you expected.
@@allthingsdestructive There's a book trilogy?? Had no idea, guess it's going on my reading list!

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

Makes me think of us humans sending a radio signal out to deep space (0:11) and getting no response. We keep trying until we finally get a signal back (0:22). We attempt to communicate with the other beings (0:31), but they get more hostile and angry (0:37). We send one more signal (0:50), then they declare that "we're next" (0:53-0:56)

When I first heard this song in the movie, I didn’t even realize it was part of the soundtrack. I think this is the alien life form’s attempt at communication. So ethereal and incomprehensible to our minds that it sounds like some form of music that’s indecipherable.
Well done, Geoff and Ben. This song is an absolute wonder and did so much for the climax of the movie.
From watching the movie again it looks like it was used as the being's sounds especially when natalie was interacting with the being. But as well a mixture for the soundtrack to really show the other wordly vibe of this being. Damn good sound design
Such a underatted movie i think it's one of the best sci fi horrors of all time
