  • Fire Dynamics in the 21st Century is an award winning video showcasing a series of unparalleled live burn fire experiments conducted on Governors Island, NY in 2012. The New York City Fire Department collaborated with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and UL to design and conduct this study, which resulted in improved understanding of fire behavior in structures and the impact of flow path control on fire growth.. These findings also contribute to improving the survivability of both building occupants and firefighters.

I've watched this video 3x. The first with our department, another after a few months and then about a year after with my crew. I'm watching again because of the Fire Dynamics class I'm in. Each time I pull a little more info out of it. Great video's. As part of the US Fire Service we all have to learn how to fight fires smarter and more effectively. We should all be trying to bring down our over 100 fire fighter a year mortality rate along with the civilian death rate. We are big, bad and proud, but our Euro counter parts don't have anywhere near the FF fatalities as we do. So we need to learn to be more flexible and willing to learn like scientists using tried and true techniques with real scientific results. Thank you UL/NIST/FDNY!

I lived in that building, Quarters 646 Apt. A for 6 years when my husband was in the Coast Guard. It was a wonderful place to live and it is sad to see that it was burned. I know it helped train fire fighters but it still brought a tear to my eye to see it burn. We were a close knit community and I knew every family in those houses, called New Brick Village. They will live on in memory ...

Great stuff! Keep the videos and information coming.. As an instructor and director of both a fire academy and fire science degree program, I'm really at the edge of my seat awaiting new information an knowledge to provide for my students and fellow firefighters..

Straight bore nozzles. More water less fire. Well done.

I was just thinking about adding an air hose into the BBQ which would heat it up more like a furnace? Then would it melt the BBQ.
Then I thought mayb fire is like water. When you squeeze the hose its more powerful. Squeezing the fire with air does the same thing. Ish.
So I searched Fire Dynamics and I got this. 😥
I was hoping to see some fire squirting hell scaping. That open fiery window looked good for an intake with a good gust though so would it have the same effect?
Cos in the summer I alway try to open two windows on opposite ends of the house through my spot and feel every gust rush through. When I thought mayb one open window is pointless cos air pressure mayb. It can't blow more air in unless air is escaping too. Intake and exhaust and it does work way better.

Dude: I guess eight minutes is too much time to invest? (Research spelling in your next month's training)

Why don't you become an instructor then?
Why don't YOU put out something better.
I'm guessing you have less than 7 years on the job.
As someone with over 32 years on the job, knows MANY people/their families who lost loved ones in structure fires (LODD) and someone who is a master instructor....
Why don't you try putting out a better video then. And have everyone like it and say that all eight minutes are power packed.....sometimes one needs to lay out the context in order to capture the point.
Note: It's impossible to be thankful and bitter at the same time.
Get out and make a positive difference instead of trolling in the weeds and smack talking those that are trying to reduce FF LODDs.

and respect your "ups"....someone in a higher pay grade than you determined that your monthly training needed to cover this topic
