  • -Mario Ritter, Jr. and Ashley Thompson host the Learning English podcast for Thursday, October 10, 2024.
(1:03) First up, Mario has a report on this year's winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. American David Baker, Briton Demis Hassabis and American John Jumper will share the prize for discoveries related to protein.
(8:22) Next, we hear this week’s Learning English Technology Report. Bryan Lynn reports on new tools that Instagram has launched to keep young users safe. The changes also include more controls for parents to improve safety and limit the amount of time their children spend on the social networking app. The restrictive tools will be automatically activated for anyone under 18 who now signs up for Instagram in the U.S., Britain, Canada and Australia. The protections will be available for teens in the European Union later this year.
(14:31) Bryan then joins Mario to talk more about the topic. Mario asks Bryan what critics say about the new tools.
We then hear a promotional message for the VOA Learning English “Let’s Learn English with Anna” series for children. Mario also tells us what listeners can expect to learn about in tomorrow’s Everyday Grammar lesson.
(18:30) Finally, we hear the Lesson of the Day from Andrew Smith and Jill Robbins. Today, they explore interjections and some surprising direct and indirect objects.
Mario and Ashley close the show.
