    I always thought that this song should have more attention. It's such a nice vibe you get when you first enter the Kiln. The final area, the top of the world. All gray, few drops of rain falling, and five remaining Black Knights, guarding their long-hollowed master, Gwyn. It's the simplest stage, however one of, if not the most atmospheric in the game.

    I always pause as I descend those stairs to the Kiln, watching the shades of the Knights slowly pass by sends a shiver down my spine. It sounds like music to me in the game, and almost a mournful and sad one at that. Regardless, it is a fitting sound to the scene and I have to wonder if their sacrifice was worth it. Another proof, not that I needed one, that this game is a work of art.

      Hamza Shinwary Sad ? In a way, I guess.
      But since everything comes to an end eventually, I think their end wasn’t the worst one.
      They died surrounded by their brothers in arm, serving the King that won their respect through his wisdom and bravery, sharing his fate so that the end, for others, might come just a little latter.
      These proud knights fell honoring the sacrifice of their lord, staving off the end of the world for all those they knew and loved. To warriors such as them, is there a more befitting end ?

    i remember my first black knight encounter. being killed by a single one over and over again. i eventually got used too how they behave but when i was walking down these steps and seeing so many of their spirits just walking across the steps a flat out chill went up my spine. such powerful warriors so many of them sacrificed to not save but just extend the age of fire just a little longer. was the Darkness. the Abyss. such a terrible powerful force to warrent such a mass sacrifice of such powerful knights? i got my answer when i saw the DLC... and that chill turned into a rush of power when i realised that the chosen undead aswell as all of the undead that you have come across on your journey are the embodiment of what the Abyss is. a unstoppable unkillable force that can never truly be beaten back. a force that always returns and consumes and destroys all in it's path. Manus was not only the Father of the Abyss. he was the father of humanity. and his Dark soul YOUR humanity. his gift too you. your birthright. your never ending curse.

      Humans have humanity.

    • @slugofborg6532
      @slugofborg6532 9 років тому +32

      bubbajoe117 I've never seen Abyss as so simple an all consuming front. Humanity, and souls seemed, to me, reminiscent of the Yin and the Yang.
      Once a cycle of souls comes to an end, the Dark Soul comes to power. Once the Dark Soul is exhausted, the Age of Souls returns.
      Looking at it in this manner, theoretically, Lordran should have died out 300 years prior when the Abyss began to emerge. Successfully suppressing it results in the cycle reaching stagnancy, the age of the Soul burns out, but the Abyss is in no position to usurp it.
      Nature becomes upset, people become empty husks, stuck between life and death, and thus Dark Souls begins...
      It's a bit skimpy, but it's the best I could rationalize it.

    The Black Knights who still wander Lordran in service to their lord are empty beings, driven only by that service and duty. They are but shells, remnants of what once was. The armor holds no body, only the fading embers of the fallen's will. Undying loyalty, indeed. The song is sad because it's tragic: their service can aid Gwyn no longer, though they still try so hard to do so, even after death.

    This music kept me sane after every time Gywn killed me. It's kinda weird how I went from raging after the first few deaths to then cherishing each attempt after. It's as if initially it hadn't sunk in that this was the end. After each death; the staircase, the music, the knights ghosts strolling through; a constant reminder of the tragedy that occurred and also the entire purpose of why we're doing what we're doing. When I defeated Gwyn I didn't even celebrate. I knew nothing about Dark Souls just over a month ago, but now I can say it's one of my favorite games.

    Has anyone realized that the Kiln of the First Flame is outside of Lordran walls?
    Also, everything is ash there and some structures have points jutting out like an explosion happened (which it did). Because if you give yourself to the flame, an explosion happens. Can you imagine going through that and, unlike the Chosen Undead, living through it like Gwyn did? How did Lordran survive and why is it outside the walls and not a protected temple? Beyond the Kiln, the horizon is ash. Anor Londo was built high up and far where Gwyn called home yet he remains at the Kiln. Perhaps he has accepted that he has lost friends, been betrayed by friends whom he bequeathed parts of his soul to (Four Kings and Seath) and accepts death yet willing to fight for his life as he knows of the prophecy of a Chosen Undead. Perculiar don't you think?

    • @Reaper0Sovereign

      I have a theory, like Ash lake and like New Londo Ruins -- where the bodies of the dead litter the ground -- the ashes on the floor of the Kiln of the First Flame could potentially be the ashes of all the dead knights. For what else could the ashes come from? We should know that fire burns and generates heat, but ashes come from what is burnt and flakes off.

    • @albinopanda2318

      Britt Dunaway
      I have another theory from reading about the Black Knights and studying them. They seemed more like loyal dogs that were betrayed. Gwyn took his black knights to the Kiln, not his shining silver whom faught in the dragon wars (I always consider silver and black seperate divisions). They're called faithful , or "once-proud" probably because now they're strays. I'm not sure if they're protecting Gwyn or trying to stop you from lighting the flame to be honest. It can be looked at in any way.

      Black Knights release a black "mist" when you stab them just like the Dark Wraith Kings in the 4 Kings Fight. Where as the Silver Knights release a white mist, whether this is because they're illusion or "holy" is up for debate.

    There is some speculation that Manus' boss room is the location of the first flame, owing to the location and geography.
    That said, you can see from the intro cinematic that the the First Flame was beneath, or at least within, one of the arch trees, in a natural cavern - just like Gwyn's boss room. The Kiln itself is an extension of Firelink Shrine: the ruins within appear to have been constructed to safeguard and strengthen the area, as well as allow easy passage should one, such as Gwyn, require access to the genesis point of the Lord Souls.
    It strikes me that it's on the same plane as Ash Lake, and the walls may have been constructed to help protect it from the Dragons (I know they can fly, but Anor Londo appears to have been encircled in the same manner and that survived). Perhaps the Kiln area acted as a citadel during those wars? When men lived beneath the surface plane, or perhaps it's simply an elaborate temple.

      If you die to Manus, it's possible to see your bloodstain at the bottom of the Valley of the Drakes. However, if you die to the Four Kings you cannot. I put this down to the spread of the Abyss blocking or consuming all light.

    I'd figured that the large circular wall built around the Kiln itself was one of the walls you can see looking down from Firelink Shrine.
    If it holds any significance, the Kiln is built right on top of an archtree stump. The trees must be sturdy indeed, seeing as how that one withstood the inferno that resulted from Gwyn's linking of the fire, while all else around it is naught but ash.

    Gwyn's faithful knights...
    They Served their lord Gwyn from the beginning, all the way to the dreadful end.
    The black knights (once silver knights) went with Gwyn to link the fire.
    They faced many dangers, including the chaos demons.
    The fire of the chaos demons scorched their armour, changing it from beuatiful silver, to jet black.
    When Gwyn sacrificed himself, the massive explosion burnt their armour even further and killed several numbers of them.
    The surviving ones bodies were totally obliterated, turning their blood to a black paste and leaving their souls trapped in the armour.
    All of those who survived, now wander the lands aimlessly, knowing that their master will never return, and that his sacrifice and their tireless battles and efforts, were for nothing.
    The Silver knights who stayed in Anor Londo have no clue about what has happened. They just wait, hoping that their master will one day, come home...

      Wrong...chaos demons didn't make silver knight to black knight.

      Carrier Of Light Actually it is a possibility.
      The black knights had a silver armor before, just like the other silver knights, and it was then « charred », which (considering they were the one who fought against the demons) can mean that it was charred during their war against demons, or when they sacrificed themselves to the first flame alongside Gwyn.

    • @nathanjora7627
      @nathanjora7627 3 роки тому

      « his sacrifice and their tireless battles and efforts, were for nothing »
      Since when thousands of years more of the age of light rather than the coming of the dark, and ultimately allowing for light to remain even in the dark (betrayal of the fire ending in DS3) « nothing » ? Gwyn’s sacrificed allowed for the world to thrive for thousands of years more than it should’ve, that’s pretty good in it’s own right.

    I doubt that is supposed to be the actual position. Just where the devs put it for convenience. The asylum is actually somewhere to the south of Lordran (source: intro movie).

    Seriously though, they needed to make a Demon Boss Fight where Black Knights come in to help you. That would be the most amazing boss fight ever. Like the final boss of the 3rd dlc of Dark Souls 2. Loyce Knights help you in the fight. If only Dark Souls 3 made Old Demin King a very strong big demon boss, and some black knights walk through the fog wall to assist you.

    Yes, you have to take into account that this map is just a collision map and the undead asylum isn't connected to the rest. Same goes for the World of Ariamis and in a way, the Kiln isn't supposed to be on the same level as the firelink shrine. But these places are special, the Ash Lake and lost Izalith on the other hand are direct parts of the whole big maze, and therefore their respective distances are geographically coherent with the in-game experience of the player.

    As the chosen undead was descending into the kilm of the first flame he/she saw the ghosts of the black knights and monologue "So this was the fate of those loyal knights to lord Gwyn, how unfortunate for them. Thank I am here to end this pain… may they all rest in peace and I hope they won't serve such a fearful god"

    I think this is an edited reversed version of dark sun Gwyndolin. Pretty good use of the limited soundtrack to create such haunting beauty. Dark sun Gwyndolin has faith in his father until the very end, but here in the kiln of the first flame we see were that faith really leads you. It leads you to be charred to ash and damned to wander forever.

    pre-patch, if I attacked the Black Knight spirits wandering the stairs to the Kiln, I would get 2000 souls about 2 minutes later... Strange, as they didn't disappear, so maybe they kinda count as entities? Post-patch, it didn't work...

    • @skylarcrittenden3093
      @skylarcrittenden3093 9 років тому +2

      Edmund Withnell that's why I don't really put to much credit into theories linking entities because of their sounds. From recycles so many of their sound effects..

    • @Theswordundrawn
      @Theswordundrawn 9 років тому +4

      I think the sound effects for the Alonne knights was a deliberate hint: The Iron King met something beneath the magma that warped him, and it is strongly implied the thing he met was Gwyn, and gained Gwyn's soul as a result. In that case, the Alonne knights serve a similar purpose to the Black Knights, making their death cries a deliberate call-back.

    Actually I'm not sure the kiln of the first flame is the place where the first flame apeared. I think it's just the place Gwyn built to kindle the bonfires in that huge explosion that made him and his knights go hollow. If you look at the artworks you can see this scene pictured. I believe the very first flame apeared where you fight the bed of chaos. Evidence of this is in the intro, where you see the roots and the cave in which the fire sparks, Also BoC is the lowest point of Lordran.
