Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengal's loss to the Baltimore Ravens and how the defense can improve moving forward in the season.
It was another classic game on Sunday as the Bengals fell to the Baltimore Ravens 41-38 in overtime. The Bengals fall to 1-4 and the biggest question mark for the team is why the defense is playing so poorly.
Lap and Coach Anarumo talk about what needs to improve to turn the season around and it starts with earning a win this week against the New York Giants. Starting cornerback Dax Hil suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's game so we will see who will step up to take his place for the rest of the season.
We want to thank Coach Walters for being a fantastic guest and for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Lou Anarumo needs to have his DB'S cover their receivers and stop watching Lamar Jackson running around in the backfield scrambling trying to buy extra time to throw the ball. The touchdown thrown to Isaiah Likely. The DB's were all eyes on Lamar Jackson while Isaiah Likely was running around looking for the open spot in our inzone. I was sad to Watch. These are Pro Athletes, they ought to know that you have to cover your man. I would take my chance and let Lamar beat me with his legs, rather than keep finding open receiver's down field all day long.

On that play I seen turner look at likely then ignore him to watch Lamar. What I don't understand is why keep eyes on Lamar when he had no where to go? His only option was out of bounds how do you not stay with the only receiver in that area after looking at him. The lack of awareness is crazy

False. Absolutely no hard questions asked or answered per usual. That’s why it was so refreshing for everyone to hear Joe Burrow say “we are not a championship team right now.” We are fed the same political bs every damn post game and weekly interviews with no new results.
The Cincinnati media is scared to ask the hard questions because they are worried about their media privileges being taken away from them by the Bengals if they build a negative reputation with the organization by pissing off coaches and players with their questions. I can understand this fear as this is their livelihood but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
This is what happens when your team is under a regime. We can only pray things change when Katy Blackburn finally takes the mantle. Luckily there has been signs of that with investments over the recent years such as the indoor practice facility, aggressiveness in free agency, and selling the stadium naming rights but It’s truly an absolute shame that Mike Brown is still the owner during the Joe Burrow era. Im sure he’s a nice man but he has made it undeniably clear his priority isn’t bringing home Super Bowls to Cincinnati for a long time now. Make no mistake he is the problem and always has been. Our roster is not this bad. Not even on defense or Lou. It’s our Owner.

The first 6 mins of this video is spent polishing Lamar Jackson’s pole. I don’t care if it is Harry Potter playing quarterback.. you can’t be so bad that you allow the QB to pick up a bad snap and run all the way to the sideline.. 20 yds behind the line of scrimmage and hit a guy wide open in the back of the end zone. And instead of taking accountability, they chalk it up to “a great play from the QB” when it should be classified as “a pathetic play from the defense”.. This team gives too much respect to every team and none to themselves. 1-4. bad coaching. Terrible coaching in clutch moments. It is that simple.

i realize he hasn't always been given the best personnel by the front office, but at some point some of the blame for the bengals ineptitude lies with lou. they've never been able to stop the run since he's been DC. DJ Reader made them respectable almost single handedly for a few years as long as he was healthy, but his defenses have been historically bad against the run every other season. his performances against patrick mahomes have bought him a lot of leash, but the reality is he has had a bottom half defense every year.

I feel for Lou, he has proven his defense works if he has the personnel. However I had serious questions about it going into the season. Mainly the depth along the d line and secondary. They put a lot of faith in bringing bell back and it hasn’t worked. This team is lacking a top corner and an interior pass rushing presence on the line. Rankins has been hurt but I always thought of him as more of a Larry O type to rotate with BJ and then they bring back Reader. That didn’t happen. Also, we should’ve grabbed Gilmore instead of going amount in the secondary but I’m sure that wasn’t happening due to money.

  • @louiseregan2498

All Lou's star defensive players were mishandled by the Brown Family Trust. Bates ended up walking although he wanted to stay with Cinci; Von Bell left with Bates because he was ticked at how the front office manhandled Bates; DJ Reader read the signs from the front office this preseason and decided he didn't need the drama and shut that door on the Bengals; Awuizie never even discussed diddly with the front office he just exited stage left; and if you think this is over remember, Trey Hendrickson. Trey may have his hand on the doorknob because of the terrible deal the front office gave him last year! Nope, don't blame Coach Taylor or Lou Anarumo, blame the culprits who are responsible for yet another major fiasco. Yup, you guessed it, blame the Brown Family Trust. In a dumb attempt to save money they put their money and all the responsibility for winning on their franchise QB, Burrow. What they failed to realized is the QB doesn't play the game by himself, you need a team that includes a strong defensive line like the one the Bengals use to have before they tried to save money and go on the cheap.
My advice to the Brown Family Trust is: You have to spend money in the NFL to have a winning team. If you're not prepared to do that ... then damned well sell the Bengals' franchise to someone who has deep pockets! The Bengals' fan base deserve a winning team, finally!

@@ygBUCKEYES614Got a better Idea, let's tell it the way we see and foster a degree of discomfort for the Brown Family Trust so they change their bone-headed way of doing business. They can start by erasing their artificial line in the sand they've drawn concerning guaranteed monies. That was the problem with Bates contract, Tee's contract and now Ja'Marr's contract. If they continue on with their stupidity concerning guaranteed money they are not only going to cause the further disintegration of the defense, which in my opinion they have already severely damaged, but will eliminate all the star weapons Burrow has on the offense. Look at what they've done to Tee, he's now playing on the franchise tag; Ja'Marr was so ticked off at the front office's misleading "come-on" to negotiations it knock him off his game until recently. Is that how professional owners in the league handle things? What I see is a bunch of Bengal front office amateurs pretending to know what the heck they're doing when they don't.They need to stop jerking their star players around and pay them what they've earned!
They further have got to understand more about their budget and how to better manage it to pay their players. Numero uno, the cap is pre 2:29 dicted to go up exponentially in the future. Stop squeeze the nickle to save a penny! Secondarily, don't throw exorbitant money at facility development, like 35 million on a locker room remodel when your looking for 28 million to payTee Higgins.Thirdly, open your thinking to new ideas about revenue sources other than the NFL's. For example the owners put a proposition on the table this summer, that allowed owners to sell up to 10% of their franchise to independent financiers to raise additional resources. The only vote against that policy was Katie Blackburn's vote. Presently the Brown Family Trust owns 97 or 98 percent of the Bengals' franchise and they want it to stay that way. Star players be damned. Fourthly, the front office needs to negotiate in good faith. Don't send Duke out there to say things like: Go find your own Tee Higgins we're keeping him! Duke conveniently forgot to mention the franchise tag! I think that's misleading. How about you. And lastly, strike when the irons hot. Negotiate early with your players and save the organization millions. I thought there was a real chance they just might pull it off this time with Ja'Marr's contract because they could have saved beaucoup dollars. They could have spread out Ja'Marr's contract over 5 years. Ah, but they got cute and put the guaranteed money in the third year of the contract. Why you ask is guaranteed money so important to players? Because they have money if they get injured, that's why. This year Ja'Marr took out his own insurance on himself, because the Brown Family Trust DIDN'T.
Now if the front office can't change their ways from pressure from you and me and others, then we implement plan B ... your plan!

My point is I seen the chiefs recently not miss a beat with rookies after losing key players and that all come down to coaching! When I see the Bengals defense I don't see the worst talent in the NFL. Not the best but far from the worst what I see is players playing out of position or not playing enough. Ppl are left wide open by themselves I think that have more to do with scheme than talent. We have to put players in position to do what they do best if they have to think to much instead of just playing we will always be a split second behind. And that's what I'm seeing, I seen Bengals defense in the past that wasn't fast or strong enough I'm not seeing that with this unit I see a defense that's confused and out of place.

Anarumo is the most overrated DC in the game. Want proof? Nobody has wanted him to be their HC in three years. His DL can’t stop the run or, other than Trey, can’t rush the passer. Every drive is 2nd & 5 and 3rd and 2. Last week, there was all of 2 PDs by the DBs. Literally, the Ravens went thru the Bengals like a knife thru butter. When you score 33 and 38 and lose both, 2 games at home, the fault is with the coaches. No Bengal defense under LA has finished in top 5. As usual with the Bengals, coaches have literally NO accountability. None. I would fire LA and immediately hire Robert Saleh.

They took away all of his good players and you want to blame him. If you want to give someone else a try in Cincinnati, how about a new front office and an actual GM and draft team? Get rid of the Browns, and Tobin, and Potts and all of those fools. Bates gone. Reader gone. Awuzie gone. No effort to address the pass rush this year or replace the NT position. Running a secondary full of mid round picks and repositioned prospects who were bad draft picks when they were made. Yes, brilliant, blame the DC who was able to scheme his defense against any opponent the 2 years during their deep playoff runs which was driven by the defense.
      Learn your team.
