I appreciate how you balance beauty, functionality, and cost. So many designers promote styles that are completely impractical for most people. You show that design can be timeless, functional, and beautiful. Thanks.
That means a lot! Thank you so watching! I know we all wish we could have major budgets to do whatever we want, but at the end of the day the space still has to be equally beautiful and livable
I agree with everything you said except the beige look. I agree if everything is beige. I decorated my condo in beige/white but I did that as a palette to display my art collection.
I'm there too. Presently redoing our bedroom in mostly whites, creams, etc. There will be Greenery and there will eventually be serene artwork of pleasant, nature/green/brown tones. Just have not found it yet. I may get the walls painted in a very, very light tan/beige, buy I'm not straying from this palette. So far, I'm loving it.
In my opinion, bland color palette is the problem. For example, In many luxury homes there is too much white, too much black, too much gray....too much combination of white-gray-black...Many luxury homes appear to be bland, sad, dead, unfinished, without "personality", like an office, like a shop, etc.
My grandparents house has been beige forever. A few years ago they painted To “change it up”. They managed to find beige versions of 3 different colors so now there’s a beige-yellow room, a beige-pink room, and a beige-peach room 😂😂😂
I never liked the Spudnik lights. I have seen many who bought those already replacing them. 🤷🏻♀️. I also like that you considered cleaning. I was so close to buying a black countertop until I read how many people regretted their bc of cleaning issues. 🤦🏻♀️
Mushroom, squiggles, checkerboard, paper lanterns and bubble dishes, I never took any of these seriously, they do look juvenile and trendy from the start. Completely disposable, or one use, temporary, never thought anybody took them seriously. Great vid Daddy.
I love mushrooms but I use them selectively. Like in my garden stuff? Absolutely. An art piece in a creative space? Go off. With a couple stuffed animals? Why not. Keep that chintzey $5 plastic garbage away from me.
I agree with every one of these points except for paper lamps because I love them and they're pretty easy to dust off and keep looking great. I actually had a nightmare last night that someone had gone into my home while I was away and replaced all my decor with checkerboard patterns, skiggly stuff and bubblecore horrors. It was so ugly I immediately woke up sweating and it took me a minute to calm my heart rate. I hate these trends so much, they totally creep me out.
Never could imagine it's possible, because I always seams to like opposite things to majority, just so many times my favourite food was removed from the menus of different restaurants because nobody else wanted it...but right now, here I agree with each single word! It's so good to know I'm not the only one :)
I try to imagine paper lighting in our home... well, we have dust. And then, in summer, there are - the flies! We live out in the countryside, with the neighbor's lovely cows all around our house. And what do cattle do? They eat grass, and they poop. A lot. And who are attracted to cow manure? Flies! Do they come into the house, the flies, that is? They certainly do, and what do they do inside the house? They poop, of course, especially on white things. Like paper lamps, which can't be cleaned. I say no to paper lighting, flies are one of the reasons. We also have pets visiting now and then, and they run around both outside and inside, so no thanks. :D
COMPLETELY agree with everything here. Good design = liveability, functionality FIRST. Because a home is a machine that supports how you want to live. I do not want to be a slave to my home! Thanks, DD....
Boucle sweaters were big in the 80s and every time i wore one, i caught the damn thing on something, so no way in hell would i pay $$$$$ for that in furniture. The mushroom thing is another no. First of all, the 70s called and they don't even want them back. Second, some of those mushrooms look too much like a certain something else that you really shouldn't have out on the kitchen counter -- though it would be super fun to hear Robin Williams riff on that, wouldn't it? :) Great video as always, DD.
I'm wearing one I found in a thrift store right now. Absolutely my cats are going to make it impossible to wear in public, and real soon. It's great for $5 though.
Shit. My newish large easy chair is boucle. But I decided to harken back to the old days of boucle and realize that, in essence, it will never go out of style! Everything goes in a circle and it will def circle back.
Just wanted to pop in and say i found your channel while looking for advice on decorating small spaces. So many tips i have picked up from you to make my home timelessly loveable! Me and my partner are converting a bus into a home/studio for us and our cat. I have a feeling it'll flow so much better after watching some of your videos! Thanks!
4) Sputniks - I like them if theyve got globe glass fittings round the bulbs that are frosted 6) Plates - they looks like dog bowl wtf 😂 7) Mushrooms - cute for kids bedroom, only 11) Zelliage - Faux tiles of these are actually nicer and more practical 13) Checkerboard - Matilda Goades kitchen is the only time I've since this look stunning
Love open shelving (just a bit). Some people DO live that way. We have beautiful things, have followed Marie Kondo and Rajiv Surrendra, and have gotten rid of Glad plastic packaging and the endless upper cabinets. We have some base cabinet and hang pans and knives on the wall. We actually chop (no food processor) and cook. Try it!
Agree with the entire list! What home architecture/room is OK for Zellige tile? Minimalism means living with everything you need and use (it doesn’t mean living with almost nothing and most images are actually showing Brutalism).
Hey Daddy ;-), when I was growing up I remember my grandparents had a mushroom themed kitchen. They had mushroom wallpaper,. mushroom print towels and mushroom top flour and sugar ceramic canisters . After my grandpa died at 90 years ago the only thing unclaimed that was theirs were the mushroom canisters that they probably bought in the 70s, which I asked my mom to keep for me when I have my own place. I should be building my home within the next couple years, I'm currently 47, and still wondering how I'll make them work in my contemporary and very small space. The colors won't be a problem, but mushrooms don't really scream modern and I'm not really into mushrooms as a theme. They are only sentimental to finally feel like they are with me in some way. Could you make a video on using inherited items in modern spaces?
Love the video. You are so right about open shelving. I am messy at the best of times. I did buy a chequered towel two months ago. And I have one boucle chair.
another great video DD, You know, I have never seen the appeal of boucle, first time I saw it reminded me of the terry cloth table cloths (held on with elastic) that were ubiquitous in beer parlours when I was young.
I am absolutely loving your channel. I have a home where I put in beautiful rod iron in casing the stairway and an amazing travertine and marble fireplace. But I want to transition it into more of a modern space. So I’m drinking in everything you’re saying.I have one question, what options do I have to silk lampshades?
Hello, I'm watching from Thailand, your videos are came up randomly and I enjoy them very much. It helpful and tasteful..by the way, love the chair and your fashion style👏👍
Oh this was an awesome video 🙌💛🙌 We’ve just newly build first home and hope to get an ok to move in next week - subscribing to your channel for inspo! And to save my creative spirit from bad dyi ideas 😅
Exactly, some things can look beautiful for a picture, but they accumulate dust and dirt and they are not practical. People forget about practicality or they have a cleaner lol
I did use 3 stacked open shelves but got not the same but similar mostly vintage baskets mostly with lids to fit on them. It looks more like a collection of baskets, but I can store tones of crap in them and it is easy to get to. Just saying even large vessels or nice baskets is an alternative, as long as you can't see into them. DD might even approve?
Would you do a video on whole house lighting based on design style? I’m building a house and all I’m seeing are a ton of sputnik lights and lighting with balls. I like them both but is there a formula to whole house lighting so you don’t use too much of one style of light fixture. Also, I can find amazing lighting but I’m not paying $15k for a single light fixture. I really need some good ideas in a moderate price range ❤.
That Prada jacket is 🔥🔥🔥. I must have it! Ps… F’ Boucle, cluttercore, neutral drenching, anything DIY, and the Tom Ford book. Back lit onyx only if you have 500 foot walls. Thank you. I’m complete. lol
I agree with everything you say, from the impractical to the downright ugly. Also agree about the word "aesthetic," but the one word that makes me cringe is "organic." The phrase "pop if color" is a major teeth grinding trigger! BTW you're hilarious. 😂❤
About the lime wash: you said in your video that you would allow it in a powder room on the condition that this room matches the style of the rest of your house. Do you have any advice (or maybe an existing video) on how to accomplish that? I was thinking about using lime wash, but even if I don't I still find it difficult to match my powder room and bathroom with the rest of my apartment. Right now they have a completely different vibe than the other rooms and it bothers me.
Hey!! New subscriber here - What do you do if you think your style is a hybrid of a few styles? For example, I LOVE organic modern and a bit of Mid Century with hints of Art Deco. I live in a 1910 PreWar apartment in NYC, so I love the ornate details and vintage pieces that pays respect to old NYC! How in the world do I even begin? Do I need to pick one first? I thought about the zealous tiles too. I'm like wait a minute. Why would people be putting this? In wet areas the uneven nest is going to be a bitch to scrub
Agree with everything except paper lanterns & stars which I have collected from all over, on my sun porch ceiling. And I don't agree about boucle, which I've always loved, but ONLY on items that don't get wear like a curtain in my laundry room that always stays perfect, and a throw pillow that doesn't get sat on or leaned against. Cluttercore? 🙄 I think this just people’s attempt to justify having too much stuff. Make it a “style”! No. Lol even if it is ‘nicely’ arranged, too much stuff is still too much stuff. Sure, i don’t want my home to be empty and void, but i also don’t want my home to be filled to the brim with stuff. Plus, “Cluttercore” is too visually overwhelming. That gallery wall makes me wonder where my eye is supposed to land. No resting place whatsoever.
Lol I see a man in a black shirt and patterned pants in a yoga pose with big round knees - larger than life and sorry I cannot unsee it 😂 But love your content 👍👍👍

My Sputinik is high above the dining table but on a serious dimmer, so not a problem from glare, none. Maybe would be on full power, but it just gives a nice glow but there are 18 bulbs.
