    So many awesome questions! The ceiling fans...I should have made it a point to address her behavior. That is totally typical behavior for her when she's in a good mood. She likes ceiling fans. She was just having a grand time. The incident in the post office was an everyday thing regardless of where we are. She was somewhat more vocal than usual and the girl just needs to dance sometimes but it wasn't aatter of being overwhelmed. Wanted to clear that up. 😁

      Thank you for clarifying! I was thinking the ceiling fans were overwhelming her! Looking forward to seeing your new video style coming up- not always daily vlogging! More Maass' is always more wonderful! lol Lots of love to you & your family!

      I was in the post office doing PBS with my non verbal autistic client once and some people offered that we cut in front of them. I replied 'thank you that's very kind of you, but no. Keith is queuing up to send his parcel like everyone else.' and they all looked at me like I was some kind of monster 😂

    I remember you guys saying that you aren’t above average parents you simply rose to the occasion to support your daughter, however seeing the realities of what a fraction of the hard times look like; this would be more than too much for so many parents. I think you don’t take enough credit for how strong and perseverant you are not just as parents but as a strong family☺️ coming from a person with autism in a not so understanding household (as my dad is also on the spectrum but on the opposite side so we clash), you all should be proud❤️

      Bearded Dragonz that is very true, I’m in the same position, however I feel like if the parent doesn’t themselves have the disorder then they assume it’s easily solved. The maass family are an exception to that trend☺️

    Of course people are going to look. I don’t think they should be judged in an unkind way for it. These are loud unpredictable noises/communication that can not be understood by just listening. Give people the benefit of the doubt- maybe if they observe and not just ignore they can learn something. And watching her when she’s dancing helps people maintain personal space. Be kind. See kind.

    Do you think people are staring because they are curious as to why you are filming her? If you don’t already do so, maybe carry a small business card to hand to the staring people, directing them to your channel. This may educate them even further than them wondering what you are doing.

      No people just stare. I have a son that is similar to Abby. He has behaviors in public and ppl just stare and are sometimes rude. My son will make sounds, stim,run off sit himself down on the ground and won't get up. I don't mind ppl asking questions. But I have had strangers tell me I have no business taking him out in public. Ppl need to be more tolerant.

    • @bluze6131

      @Panic! Treasure good answer. People can stare for the cause of being curious, not hateful

    • @DaJesster0405
      @DaJesster0405 6 років тому +1

      The card thing seems like a good thing. It can actually work as a way to get the attention of people who are staring. Having a life long disability myself I can honestly say that for the most part the staring is mostly gawking. The curious people most often talk to you and they don’t just stare. It’s natural to stare when something is outside of our realm of normality, but the stare isn’t continuous and doesn’t make you feel like your being viewed as some type of inhuman or something.

    • @JolavyRose
      @JolavyRose 5 років тому +9

      Catherine Lantz I totally agree. My daughter 7years old and is non verbal autistic. She has no physical stims but she does vocal. People just stare, rolling their eyes, saying she needs discipline. I had one lady shhhh my daughter and than say she needs to be quiet. I almost went off but thank God He stopped me. I told her she has autism and she needed to educate herself. I was in a shoe store and everyone was on our side. We got free shoes. No one knows what us parents really go thru. It’s easy to judge on the outside looking in.

    Had a group of autistic teenagers and their two teachers come up to my register at work the other day. Thank to your channel I learned how to interact with them. Their teacher came up and thanked me for me and my cashiers being so patient, but I told them it was just about being kind to each other, and differences just made us unique. She told me she was so happy, it was their first Michaels trip and now they are coming back every week because of this interaction with a different group of kids. I told them about your channel and hopefully hey have found you too!

      FatheringAutism i know it! and i am saying that it takes A LOT. and is EXHAUSTING. i definitely didn’t mean it in a hurtful way.
      i was a nanny for a non-verbal severely autistic little girl for 5 years. I was there for potty training and teaching her to use her iPad for communication. I saw her make leaps and bounds but had to get a job that provided benefits because i became ill myself and needed really good health insurance...i still attend all family functions and love on her family whenever I can.
      i definitely appreciate all that you do. the awareness you guys raise is nothing short of incredible.
      i also appreciate that sometimes going into public is hard. I had taken my little girl into walmart to get her a treat (donut) after a really good day and she was just vocal stimming and someone down the isle was so disgusted by the vocal stimming the said “can’t you shut her up?”
      i was in shock... i didn’t know what to do or say. she wasn’t dancing. she wasn’t running away from me or being difficult. she was simply sitting in the cart watching nemo and vocally stimming.
      and you deal with those interactions on a regular basis... and I got check out at the end of the day... i got to go home and decompress from it all. on a hard day, i got to go home and get a good nights sleep... on a hard day, you roll with the punches and then might also have to be up with her all night as well... there is no checking out.

    I am an aba behavioural therapist in Australia, and the way you guys respect Abbie and open her to the world, is the way I help my clients and it makes me happy to justify my teachings the way you do. Never in my teachings do I try to get rid of stims.I am all for getting your child open and engaging in the world and forgetting what people around you think. I love that you guys seize every moment to be a moment of teachings, something as simple as making her open the mail box is fantastic for learning and independence. So many times i laugh at/with her because you can jut see her testing if she can get away with certain things; such a teenage thing to do and aware of. Very cheeky and smart girl you have! My husband and I were out at dinner without our autistic son tonight and noticed a family with a child on the spectrum doing an amazing job with him! I wished we would have said something but even as people who "get it" we don't want to impose. My husband even said (on the drive home) "they kept looking at us" & "I hope they don't think we thought their child is loud. He was so cute." I was at the diner a few days ago. There was this sweetest older man in there who I believed to have Autism or some form of special needs. He started to yell and carry on about going to dairy queen and that kinda broke my heart I would have taken him 😂 but anyway there was this group of older ladies sitting by us. Yes the yelling startled us all at first I mean who would expect it but as soon as I realized what it was I just explained to my mother and we carried on. This said group of older women were laughing and one turned to the other and said “there’s something wrong with him” in just a tone that got under my skin. I had never really experienced this before, I know people aren’t fully educated in this kind of stuff and don’t really understand it but it was just odd to me. People should always treat people with kindness no matter what. I was just happy in that situation that I could advocate and not be that person to judge. But the fact you need to experience that with Abbie it just breaks my heart. Even if people don’t understand they still shouldn’t judge you know? It just gets to me.

    Is there any chance the ceiling fan in the post office was possibly getting her worked up. I noticed she was staring up like she does when certain ceilings bother her. Also, do you think Abbie has an awareness that people are staring that maybe upsets her more?

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  6 років тому +19

      I don't think she notices or cares. Maybe the fan. She has always liked fans and stared at them calmly. I think after several minutes she was just getting antsy.

    • @nottheoneforyou
      @nottheoneforyou 6 років тому +5

      @@fatheringautism okay, that makes sense that maybe it was more entertaining her until she got restless. But it also makes sense that she may not notice or care if people stare. I just didn't know if it causes her to charge up more if she sees people staring.

    So glad you found the vlog Asa. People staring can get to me at times but I feel that in this day and age people should be more aware and accepting to those who are just different than them. Sometimes I'll look back at them and say "he has Autism". At least then they know what they're watching.

You have brought awareness and taught people so much about autism and living autism. Thank you for making it real. Many thumbs up for all you do daily with and for Abbie. Your consistency and positivity are a shining example but you're also able to show the hard stuff reality too in a dignified way. Love to you all, Maass family. 👍😊💕

    seems like she is following something, I wonder if it is the lights reflecting different to her or how she sees

    Abby was really happy. She was giddy with joy! I don’t think people stare because they are judging you or for a bad reason. Perhaps they admire you for being such great parents, for being brave and taking care of her so much. The way that you treat her, you talk to her and you demonstrate so much love towards her… most likely they admire you. As a mommy, I’ve been in pediatrician offices and seen parents with special needs children be rude to their kids or just flat out negligent with them. But you guys are gold standard parents, definitely you’re getting admiration stares. Be proud of yourselves 🙂🙂🙂

    You guys are doing a great job . I’m 36 and my older brother with very severe autism / OCD is 37 . I grew up being very involved with taking care of him and know the challenges 😉. I’ll eventually get full custody of him and will take care of him full time,when it becomes to hard for my folks as they get older . My brother is my best friend and I’ve learned to love him on the good and bad days and we have a great relationship.
    You guys are in my prayers, remember the LORD will never give you anything that is to hard for you to handle. You guys are doing a great job and your not alone 👍🏾.

    So glad you found this footage. You are more polite to strangers than I would be. I don’t care if people are ignorant of the facts of any condition, that’s no excuse for staring or being rude. I would try to control myself But I’m sure I would hurt peoples feelings by giving them them the 3 second version of why she stims and makes verbal noises. I call this awareness. It’s a shame that there are so many Baffoons in the world. ❤️

    I get the staring... as a kid it bothered me when people would stare at my sister. But now I have come to accept that others truly do not understand. My sister was born with retinoblastoma, and a brain tumor at 9. She is physically different looking than us. I used to get defensive but now I realize that they're curious.

    Hi Priscella, & Asa, another great video. I'm glad you found it. I'm also glad you aimed your camera at that big circle on the wall by Abbie's couch. It's very pretty & interesting. Did Annie make it? I've been intrigued by it for a long time. Does Annie draw? Been curious about that too, because Asa, you said something about her art-work, but I haven't seen any yet, except for the rainbow picture you had on your frig.
    I love your vlog. Have a good night.

    I can relate to this. My son is profoundly Autistic. Just going anywhere is a huge chore. But we do it. He has his behaviors and gets overly stimulated and ppl stare. We have even have ppl tell us we have no business taking him out in public, but we keep doing it. I wish some ppl would take their blinders off and see and understand that people who have disabilities are human beings too.

    Yes, I know how Abbie feels. I believe it is the environment as well that influences our autistic behavior, isn't it? As for me, I say yes. How about you, Asa? To sum it up, I have some anxiety issues living in an extremely small tourist makes me nervous. Frequent tourist activities every week I have never adjusted to. I am well-adjusted to medium to large cities because they have MANY more places to shop, and many more activities. Whenever I am at work, and we're seriously busy, it puts me in an adrenaline rush because there are so many requests for carryouts and spill clean ups. One support manager really does understand me, and tells me with her around, I'll never need to rush. Whenever It is crowded at where I work, I feel like I am head-to-head and shoulder-to-shoulder with customers. Do large crowds bother Abbey?
